The Fifth Season, Plus Historical Romances!

  • The Fifth Season

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

RECOMMENDED: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and as of right now, it’s only being price-matched by iBooks. Elyse loved this book and gave it an A:

The Fifth Season is also a relatively quick read. It opens with a cataclysmic disaster and doesn’t slow down its pace. Its characters travel widely. My only word of warning is that the book ends on a massive cliffhanger. Fortunately the sequel, The Obelisk Gate, will be released in August. After finishing this book I’m making desperate grabby hands for the next one.

If you like immersive, action-driven fantasy and if you want a fantasy world that’s not Euro-centric–or if you just love a really, really good story–I cannot recommend The Fifth Season enough.

This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.

Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

  • When a Scot Loves a Lady

When a Scot Loves a Lady by Katharine Ashe

When a Scot Loves a Lady by Katharine Ashe is 99c! This is the first book in the Falcon Club series and the next two books are also on sale for 99c each! I also want to issue a catnip warning because this book has a Scot hero, forced proximity in a snowy cabin, and hints of a holiday romance. However, some readers found the written Scottish brogue to be a bit much. Have you read this one?

London gossips are asking: What use has society of an exclusive gentleman’s club if no gentlemen are ever seen to pass through its door?

After years as an agent of the secret Falcon Club, Lord Leam Blackwood knows it’s time to return home to Scotland. One temptation threatens his plans—Kitty Savege. The scandal-plagued lady warms his blood like a dram of fine whiskey. But a dangerous enemy stands in the way of desire, and to beat this foe Leam needs Kitty’s help…

Kitty never wanted to spend her holidays in a wretched country village! With snow up to the windows, escape is nowhere in sight. A roguish Scottish lord, however, is. His rough brogue sends tingles of heat from Kitty’s frigid toes to her chilled nose, but she’s confident she can withstand that. What she cannot control is the reaction of her carefully guarded heart when she discovers this beast is, in fact, no beast at all…

  • The Young Blood

The Young Blood by Erin Satie

The Young Blood by Erin Satie is available for preorder for 99c! This is the fourth book in her No Better Angels series and it releases September 27th, so you won’t have to wait too long. The only advanced review I’ve found says that it’s a pretty heartbreaking road to an HEA, but if you read the description, the heroine is currently married. I know that’s a turn off for some readers. However, I think we can all agree that Satie’s covers are absolutely gorgeous.

Sabine Banchory is a sensible, intelligent, and eminently capable woman—which is why she was forced to marry a short-sighted reprobate. She tries to keep her husband in line while he fritters away her dowry at gambling dens and flaunts his affairs.

The Earl of Kingston is just the sort of man she most despises. He’s a notorious rake who wastes his considerable natural talents on seduction, often dragging the women he targets into the mire of scandal and disgrace. And all for what, a bit of pleasure?

When the smooth-talking, sinfully handsome and strangely perceptive earl sets his sights on her, she doesn’t bother to drive him away. He’ll soon learn she’s immune to such temptations.

    Isn’t she?

  • The Complete Novels of Jane Austen

The Complete Novels of Jane Austen by Jane Austen

The Complete Novels of Jane Austen is $2.99! This is an Amazon only deal. There is some split between whether the digital or the hardcover version is better. The hardcover is visually stunning with illustrations inside and a ribbon bookmark, while the digital version allows for extremely easy navigation and it saves shelf space. Regardless, either version is a great addition to any Austen fan’s library.

Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Lady Susan

Collected together in one volume, The Complete Novels show the development of Austen as a writer and social commentator. From the early optimism and youthful energy of Northanger Abbey to the quiet and subtle art of Persuasion, this collection reveals the breadth of one of the best loved novelists of all time.

I got The Fifth Season when I woke up and performed my first act of every day (checking my wish list for price drops), but I have graciously reported the Kobo non-price to Amazon in the hope you “patient” people may reap even greater benefits from your “virtue.”

That Satie cover ranks right up there with Kearsley’s The Winter Sea as Most Gorgeous Cover Ever. I must own this book. I must read it. I am one of those who can’t resist a luscious cover art like that.

I had given my niece the Jane Austen book as a birthday gift and it is really a lovely piece of bookcase filler. I have it on my Kindle. When a Scot Loves a Lady has just been added to my holiday reading file. Snowy cabin and a little suspense … something to look forward on this hot Monday.
