  • The Duke of Shadows

The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran

The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran is $1.99 right now. This was Duran’s debut historical, and Sarah reviewed it when it came out and gave it a B-. She struggled with the heroine, but looooved the hero:

Julian was tortured and noble, and though he didn’t change so much as come to own himself and the power at his disposal in both of the cultures that shaped him, his journey was fascinating. Julian was marvelous, and did things I wished heroes in other historical novels would do, including beating the ever living shit out of someone who truly deserved it, and being vindicated for doing so. YUM.

In a debut romance as passionate and sweeping as the British Empire, Meredith Duran paints a powerful picture of an aristocrat torn between two worlds, an heiress who dares to risk everything…and the love born in fire and darkness that nearly destroys them.

    From exotic sandstone palaces…

Sick of tragedy, done with rebellion, Emmaline Martin vows to settle quietly into British Indian society. But when the pillars of privilege topple, her fiancĂ©’s betrayal leaves Emma no choice. She must turn for help to the one man whom she should not trust, but cannot resist: Julian Sinclair, the dangerous and dazzling heir to the Duke of Auburn.

To the marble halls of London…

In London, they toast Sinclair with champagne. In India, they call him a traitor. Cynical and impatient with both worlds, Julian has never imagined that the place he might belong is in the embrace of a woman with a reluctant laugh and haunted eyes. But in a time of terrible darkness, he and Emma will discover that love itself can be perilous — and that a single decision can alter one’s life forever.

    Destiny follows wherever you run.

A lifetime of grief later, in a cold London spring, Emma and Julian must finally confront the truth: no matter how hard one tries to deny it, some pasts cannot be disowned…and some passions never die.

  • Less than a Gentleman

Less than a Gentleman by Kerrelyn Sparks

Less Than a Gentleman by Kerrelyn Sparks is $2.99! This is a historical romance with a spy hero set in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Readers loved the tension between the hero and heroine, especially as the heroine is somewhat on the run to find her father. However, others felt the ending was rather abrupt. Have you read this one?

In this never-before-published historical romance, New York Times bestselling author Kerrelyn Sparks returns to the 18th century, where the fight for freedom is as dangerous as the fight for love.

Between searching for the missing Munro sisters and South Carolina being all but lost to the British, Captain Matthais Thomas has more important things to worry about than finding a bride. But his mother has other ideas. When Matthais finds a beautiful woman in his bed who claims to be his betrothed, he is suspicious of her identity…and determined to discover the truth.

Caroline Munro had few options. The British burned down her home, and now, traveling with her very pregnant sister, Caroline is pretending to be someone she’s not so they can have a safe place to rest. But she didn’t count on a matchmaking matron or her rogue of a son…and certainly never dreamed she would fall in love with a spy.

  • The Debutante is Mine

The Debutante is Mine by Vivienne Lorret

The Debutante is Mine by Vivienne Lorret is 99c! This is the first book in Lorret’s Season’s Originals series and has a heroine looking for lessons on how to get a husband. Readers enjoyed the secondary characters as well as the romance, while others felt the story was a bit bland. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

From the Season Standard: “A true Season’s Original embodies the class, grace, and style of the ton. Such an honor ensures the recipient her pick of eligible suitors…”

Lilah Appleton’s prospects are looking dim. With one last chance to find a titled husband before she’s forced to wed her wretched cousin, she must make this Season count. Plain, forgettable Lilah must become the Season’s Original. Desperate, she seeks help from the devilishly charming, untitled, and thoroughly unsuitable Jack Marlowe. All she must do now is resist the tempting rogue…

Bastard son and self-made man, Jack Marlowe loathes the aristocracy. When he meets Lilah, he expects her to be like all the other greedy husband-hunters. But she’s far more dangerous. Her alluring smiles and sharp tongue intrigue him. Before he knows it, he agrees to help her find a husband, revealing tricks to ensnare any man. The only problem is, his plan works too well—on him.

When Lilah becomes the belle of the ball, Jack realizes he may lose her forever—unless he can take a chance on love and claim his debutante…

  • The Governess Club: Louisa

The Governess Club: Louisa by Ellie Macdonald

The Governess Club: Lousia by Ellie Macdonald is $1.99! This is the fourth book in The Governess Club series, and you can grab all four books for less than $7. The hero is a former prizefighter and the heroine is on the run because of REASONS. Some readers disliked the heroine, but a few reviewers mentioned that it’s easier to relate to her if you’ve read the previous books.

Louisa Brockhurst is on the run—from her friends, from her family, even from her dream of independence through the Governess Club. But sometimes it’s easier for her to hide from those she loves in order to escape the secrets of her past.

Handsome but menacing John Taylor is a prizefighter-turned-innkeeper who is trying to make his way in society. When Louisa shows up at his doorstep, he’s quick to accept her offer to help—at a price. He knows that she’s hiding something, and he can’t help his protective instincts toward the beautiful woman.

Their attraction grows, but will headstrong, fiery Louisa ever trust the surprisingly kind John enough to tell him the dangerous secrets from her past that keep her running? Or will the power of her feelings scare her into running yet again?

  1. Alex says:

I LOVE Meredith Duran but her books NEVER on sale! I’ve been wanting to read this one for awhile. I’ll try not to read it all in one day, but I can’t make any promises…

I also want to recommend Vivienne Lorret’s books. Most of time they are $1.99 – the two available for preorder right now are $2.99, which is what still lower than some of the sale prices I see featured here. I’ve read five of her books (and just grabbed this one), and they were consistently good reads with no rage-inducing moments that I can recall.

  2. mel burns says:

When The Duke of Shadows came out in 2008 it was so different from the run of the mill historicals, but even though I enjoyed it, it was a little dark.
I have always wondered about the secondary characters the Earl and Countess of Lockland (?), where’s their story?

  3. Lil says:

The Duke of Shadows is one of my all-time favorite books. Knocked the socks off me when I first read it.

  4. Todd says:

Duke of Shadows made Meredith Duran an auto-buy for me. So far, I think there’s only been one that I didn’t love … and even that was good, just not to my taste.

  5. Varian says:

Meredith Duran is one of my favorite authors, and Duke of Shadows is *amazing*.

  6. Susan says:

Yes, Duke of Shadows was on the dark side (no pun), but sometimes that’s what I crave. Froth is perfectly fine on occasion, but I like to mix it up. Duran’s books tend to have a certain intensity, but not all of them are as dark as DOS, if you know what I mean.

I picked up the whole Governess Club series. Four books for the price of one, essentially, made it an acceptable gamble. 🙂
