HaBO: Couple Has Christmas Reunion Years After Family Tragedy

This HaBO request is from Katie, who is trying to find a book (possibly a romance?) she read. Trigger warning for the death of a child:

Woman returns to hometown, faces past tragedy (death of child), and gets back together with ex (father of her children).

I first read this book in late 2006 or early 2007. It was about a married couple who has three young children and somehow one of them dies.

It seems to me that it was an accident in the yard or house.

Description of the death of a child
The youngest child was strangled by blind chords.

The mom was a nurse at a hospital. Her husband couldn’t get a hold of her and brings daughter to the ER (daughter is maybe two-ish, surviving children are maybe 5 and 8).

Following the accident the family is broken, the other kids were not given enough attention, and everyone feels responsible for the accident. The book was told from the parents’ point of view, mainly the wife, though at times I believe it went back and forth between her and the husband/ex husband.

The book doesn’t reveal details of the accident until maybe mid-book. The couple divorces. Later (10-15 years), the woman goes back to her hometown or at least where she lived when she was married (Maybe to finalize divorce). At that time, the surviving children are grown and the couple reunites. The husband owns or runs a book store or a coffee shop. I think when the couple reunited it was during the Christmas season.

This book sounds really heartbreaking. Does anyone know it?

Don’t know the name, but I’d bet anything it’s a Harlequin SuperRomance. Off to go look there.

I haven’t read this one but it sounds like it could be women’s fiction in the vein of Jodi Picoult or Barbara Delinsky.

  3. Gloriamarie says:

I am positive I’ve read this. I am going to have to think hard.

I can’t help with the HaBO, but … yeah, the typo/wrong word in the spoiler had me doing the dog head tilt of confusion. Then I laughed and laughed. Sorry, it’s the editor in me.

I’m still waiting to see my HaBO request about the air stewardess who married two men. 🙁

  7. Katie says:

Redeeming Alec isn’t it…Thanks for all the comments I do not remember it being Harlequin either, any luck Gloriamarie?

  8. Gloriamarie says:

@Katie, no, although I find myself wondering if it is by LaVryle Spencer

  9. Katie says:

It sounds close to bittersweet, however; I don’t think that’s it…

    Any other potential authors GloriaMarie

Was it possibly Coming Home by Jean Brashear? There are three children, the oldest has a car accident with the youngest, who doesn’t survive. Mom and dad divorce and the oldest daughter runs away only to return with a little boy who strongly resembles her deceased brother. There is a follow up book entitled Forgiveness. Both are Harlequin Superromances one from Jan 2005 and the other April 2005. They were such powerful stories that I’ve kept and reread them several times over the last 11 years.

Thanks for your comment, I will be reading this one, though it isn’t the one 🙁
