Radio Silence

Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole is $1.74 at most vendors! Carrie reviewed this book last April. Redheadedgirl also said, “Based on a rec from Courtney Milan, this is set during an apocalyptic event with a we-all-need-to-work-together and try not to go nutty from the isolation plot – it’s tight, tense, and really good.”
No one expects the apocalypse.
Arden Highmore was living your average postgrad life in Rochester, New York, when someone flipped the “off” switch on the world. No cell phones, no power, no running water—and no one knows why. All she and her roommate, John, know for sure is that they have to get out, stat. His family’s cabin near the Canadian border seemed like the safest choice.
It turns out isolation doesn’t necessarily equal safety.
When scavengers attack, it’s John’s ridiculously handsome brother, Gabriel, who comes to the rescue. He saves Arden’s life, so he can’t be all bad…but he’s also a controlling jerk who treats her like an idiot. Now their parents are missing and it seems John, Gabriel, their kid sister, Maggie, and Arden are the only people left alive who aren’t bloodthirsty maniacs.
No one knows when—or if—the lights will come back on and, in the midst of all that, Arden and Gabriel are finding that there’s a fine line indeed between love and hate. How long can they expect to last in this terrifying new world, be it together or apart?

Deadly Strain by Julie Rowe is $1.74! This book was recommended on two podcasts: one with Sassy Outwater and one with Reader Meka. It’s romantic suspense with a bioterrorism angle and while readers loved the non-stop action, some wished there was more focus on the romance. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.
Major Grace Samuels, a trauma surgeon deployed to Afghanistan, spends her life helping her fellow soldiers overcome disease and combat injuries. But her own wounds are harder to heal. Wracked with guilt over the death of a fellow soldier, she finds comfort in her only friend and appointed bodyguard, weapons sergeant Jacob “Sharp” Foster.
Sharp feels more for Grace than a soldier should, more than he wants to admit. When the team discovers a new, quick-to-kill strain of Anthrax, he tries to focus on the mission to find its source. He knows he can help Grace defeat her demons, but first they must defeat the deadly outbreak.
Sharp is Grace’s most loyal ally, but in close quarters, he starts to feel like more. She can’t watch someone else she cares about die—but she might not have a choice. The closer they get to finding the source of the strain, the closer it gets to finding them.

Bluestocking governess? Marriage of convenience? Someone take my money please. My catnip=this
bluestocking romance? I’m with Lora — take my money please!
Lisa Ann Verge’s Heaven In His Arms (recommended by @Karin on the O Canada thread) and Entwined (the first in Colette Gale’s erotic serial Jane in the Jungle) are both FREE on Kindle.
@ Lora and Patricia – I hope you enjoyed I Spy a Duke as much as I did! Bluestocking with a thirst for revenge, indeed. However, when James decides he must protect Vivienne and teach her to protect herself, he stole my heart.
Radio Silence is brill. I enjoyed the whole series (so far?) but the first one was def. my favorite.
I downloaded the sample on I Spy a Duke and I just can’t! I read romance for light escapism and opening with a gruesome death from torture…not my cup of tea. I’m a wimp.
Any book that contains scenes in my hometown Rochester, I have to read! Sounds like Radio Silence doesn’t spend much time there before moving to the woods, though. Do other books in the series?
@Lora – I don’t think you’re a wimp at all. I’m the same way – no entrails or kids or animals in peril. Those are two of my hard lines, mostly because my imagination is REALLY FREAKING GOOD at coming up with the visuals for what I read, and my brain likes to replay those visuals when I’m trying to get to sleep. So you’re not a wimp in my opinion. Some scenes just don’t work.
