Second Chance Summer

Second Chance Summer by Jill Shalvis is $3.99! This is currently nominated for a RITA® in the Long Contemporary category. It also received two favorable grades during our RITA® Reader Challenge:
This is a tough one. I really liked the book the first time… say, B+ or A- levels of liking it. This time I got really irritated with most of the characters: a C+ at best. I’m going to average the two grades and call it a B.
I pretty much loved the setting (despite not being an outdoors person at ALL) and the various supporting characters. I liked that what complications and low-level angst there was in the relationship between Lily and Aidan was handled without too much drama, even though both of them clearly had some lessons to learn about communication and not sending mixed signals.
Cedar Ridge, Colorado, is famous for crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and pine-scented breezes. And it’s the last place Lily Danville wants to be. But she needs a job, and there’s an opening at the hottest resort in her hometown. What has her concerned is the other hot property in Cedar Ridge: Aidan Kincaid-firefighter, rescue worker, and heartbreaker. She never could resist that devastating smile . . .
The Kincaid brothers are as rough and rugged as the Rocky Mountains they call home. Aidan has always done things his own way, by his own rules. And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance…

Hot Head by Damon Suede is $1 or less! This is a M/M romance between two firefighters and good lord, look at that cover. Readers warn of, or rather praise, the emotional plot and the steamy sexy. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads. There’s also a kilt…
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire…
Since 9/11, Brooklyn firefighter Griff Muir has wrestled with impossible feelings for his best friend and partner at Ladder 181, Dante Anastagio. Unfortunately, Dante is strictly a ladies’ man, and the FDNY isn’t exactly gay-friendly. For ten years, Griff has hidden his heart in a half-life of public heroics and private anguish.
Griff’s caution and Dante’s cockiness make them an unbeatable team. To protect his buddy, there’s nothing Griff wouldn’t do… until a nearly bankrupt Dante proposes the worst possible solution: HotHead.com, a gay porn website where uniformed hunks get down and dirty. And Dante wants them to appear there-together. Griff may have to guard his heart and live out his darkest fantasies on camera. Can he rescue the man he loves without wrecking their careers, their families, or their friendship?

My Favorite Mistake by Chelsea M. Cameron is 99c! This is a new adult contemporary romance where the hero and heroine are roommates. Some readers didn’t like the heroine at all and found her to be immature. But others loved the sexual tension between the hero and heroine. Have you read this one?
Two secrets. One bet. Who will break first?
Taylor Caldwell can’t decide if she wants to kiss her new college roommate or punch him.
On the one hand, Hunter Zaccadelli is a handsome blue-eyed bundle of charm. On the other, he’s a tattooed, guitar-playing bad boy. Maybe that’s why Taylor’s afraid of falling in love with him, or anyone else. She doesn’t want to get burned, so she needs him gone before it’s too late.
Hunter himself has been burned before, but Taylor’s sexy laugh and refusal to let him get away with anything make her irresistible. Determined not to be kicked out of her life without a fight, Hunter proposes a bet: if she can convince him she either truly loves or hates him, he’ll leave the apartment—and leave her alone.
But when the man behind Taylor’s fear of giving up her heart resurfaces, she has to decide: trust Hunter with her greatest secret, or do everything in her power to win that bet and drive him away forever.

Cartel by Lili St. Germain is 99c! This is a dark contemporary/erotic romance and is book one in the Cartel series. While I love dark romances, I am not a fan of motorcycle clubs, so I can’t offer up any opinions. Other fans of dark romance say this isn’t that bad compared to other titles (it was referred to as “dark-lite”). But for those who have read this, please leave a comment below with your thoughts!
How much is a life worth?
I grew up in Colombia, the daughter of a wealthy drug lord. I lived a life of extravagance, until one day a drug run went horribly wrong and everything came crashing down around us.
I was given away. A payment for a debt. The Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club became my new owners, and I did everything I could to survive.
But falling in love with the man who owned me wasn’t part of the plan…

I think I’ve mentioned this another time Hot Head was on sale – read the sample first! This is one of those books that seems to either really, really work for readers, or really, really not work – and I think it comes down to whether or not you emotionally connect to the story. I love m/m and I wanted to love this one, but I could not get into the writing style at all and I didn’t love the characters enough to not be annoyed by the writing.
