Summertime is the perfect time for crafting.
Knitting might seem like a cold-weather hobby what with all the mittens, hats, and scarves, but as the resident Stitchy Bitch here, I can tell you that we knitters work on projects year round and sometimes in unlikely places. I’m a big fan of beach knitting, myself.
To celebrate our crafty readers we’ll be doing three giveaways this summer, each featuring a different creative hobby.
The theme for June is knitting because I picked it and frankly, I’m biased.

Here’s what’s included:
- A Jane Austen project bag that features quote from the lady herself, “She taught me to knit, which has been a great amusement.”
- A Llamarama zip-top tool bag that would ideal for storing yarn needles, a tape measure, a small pair of scissors and other odds and ends.
- A skein of yarn from one of my favorite indie dyers, Destination Yarns. All of their yarn colors are inspired by travel, and this particular color, Northern Lights, is GORGEOUS.The skein is 400 yards of fingering weight 100% super wash merino wool. If you are a sock knitter, let me tell you, this yarn is the shit. You could also make a shawlette or cowl or a hat.
- A tin of Love and Leche’s Lavendar Mint Anywhere Balm. You can use it on your lips, your hands, or to polish the chest of your own romance hero.
- A neon green sheep. This sheep serves no purpose but dammit, he’s awesome.
- And of course there are books! You also get a copy of The Last Summer by Judith Klinghorn and All Summer Long by Dorothea Benton Frank.
Standard disclaimers apply: we are not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to knit, purl, and kick ass. Exposure to knitting has been known to cause addiction and terrifying yarn storage habits. Knitting discretion is advised. Yarn envy is a serious condition and should be remedied as soon as possible. Knitting side effects may include SABLE (Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy); please contact your local knitting circle immediately if you or someone you know has reached this state. Comments will close and a winner will be chosen at random on Friday, 10 June at noon EST.
To enter just leave a comment below telling us where you plan to knit this summer. The beach? The cabin? Your backyard? Please share! And good luck!
UPDATE: The winner is Jess, who picked her own back porch for a great knitting spot!

Watching baseball, either at home or at the park!
On night at the hospital or on vacation in Iceland. The books will be passed around my coworkers
At the beach, as my happy place, avoiding the hordes.
on the road taking middle son on college tours…
At my cabin in the woods!
Hopefully in the apartment I’m trying to rent.
On my awesome porch overlooking the lake.
On my comfy couch watching Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries or Death in Paradise and dreaming of my escape to a Caribbean island and lots of rum! …Or at least hoping to make it to Gulf Shores, AL. (Mas, it’s hot in Louisiana… Bring me my AC!)
My patio, because I’ve already used my vacation this year.
I’ll be knitting in our back garden, with lazy cats stretched out in the shade.
I’m just starting and learning, so I’ll be knitting in the comfy confines of home until I’m more adept. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Knitting on the couch, trying desperately to avoid too-warm puppy cuddling. Which, when winter rolls around, will be perversely difficult to come by!
Anywhere and everywhere there’s coffee – but for a more specific place I intend to grab a project and sit at the local castle some time. If they ask very nicely I might even share the yarn with the castle kitties.
Mostly in my room, sadly. My local yarn store isn’t doing knitting circle during the summer.
The living room with Pride & Prejudice DVD on.
Oh, I’ll probably be knitting while I hang out with my fellow knitting friends and while watching TV with my husband.
I knit on my deck overlooking the hydrangeas and roses. A little slice of heaven.
I just joined a knitting group that meets at my local coffeeshop. So most of my summer knitting will be done there.
On the porch.
The kids and I are driving all the way down the Mississippi, and I’ll be knitting the whole way.
I’ll stick to my cozy library to avoid the 100+ degree weather with the 80%+ humidity of my part of the country. I have some comfy chairs that are perfect for sinking in to while knitting.
Well it’s winter here, so I’ll be staying indoors out of the rain. When summer comes around, I’ll probably still be inside on the sofa.
I probably knit in all the usual places. At home, in work meetings, and somtimes while commuting (and listening podcasts). And of course when meeting my lovely knitclub! They are the best. We’ll have to see if I manage to get a habit of also knitting at my allotment cottage, but at the moment I have so much gardening work to do there that knitting is not an option.
I’d love to say I’d be knitting out on my porch but since I am anti-heat (which is tragic since CA is already getting triple digits), I’ll be knitting in my air conditioned abode with a tall glass of iced tea.
My daughter is the knitter. I’m going to sit her in a lounge chair on the patio and bring her mimosas while she knits me an awesome pair of socks!
As it has just become Winter here in Australia, Summer is a long way off! I am just starting out knitting (my grandma taught me 20-something years ago, but I’d forgotten how!) and am loving it! I will be knitting in my nice warm lounge room and hopefully by the campfire when camping!
In the car on the drive to/from Florida! We’ll be listening to audiobooks, so I’ll need something to do with my hands.
I crochet rather than knit, I don’t know if that counts. I crochet sitting on the couch whilst watching Thomas the Tank Engine with DD2. She sometimes joins in with her ‘crochet’ (tangle of wool and the biggest crochet hook).
(I live in the UK, so I’m assuming the offer doesn’t extend over here. It all looks lovely though!)
I plan on knitting outside and enjoying my new backyard!
Maybe I’ll finally finish that blanket I’ve been working on during an upcoming long road trip!
I am mostly going to knit at home this summer – just retired and after going to work every day for years I have discovered I really like staying at home for days on end!
Pretty much anywhere I’m sitting down. I can read and walk, but I still haven’t gotten the knack of knitting and walking…
In the bedroom away from my kids.
I am taking a trip to Scandinavia this summer and will definitely be taking my knitting with me. I am working on a feather and fan baby blanket for a friend who is due in October and finishing up my first pair of socks. Reading and traveling…does it get any better?
I like to knit on my backporch – it’s shaded but still has good natural light!
My best friend is a knitter and I am always finding pretty yarn for her. We will be traveling to Ghana, and hopefully she can get her knitting needles through security. I promise to give her everything if I win except the sheep. It’s sooo cute!
I’ll be knitting on a plane& in Italy later this month. I also knit when I take mom to doctor appts , hair appts , etc. I knit what hung tv, I knit listening to book. I don’t knit while driving though. 😉
I plan to knit in my favorite chair during my staycation.
I would like to knit out on our little patio, but that would require an outdoor chair. Instead, I’m mostly knitting on the couch while the boy watches sports.
At work – I run the library’s knit & natter group. Essentially getting paid to knit/crochet? Best perk EVER.
