Summer Knitting Giveaway

Summertime is the perfect time for crafting.

Knitting might seem like a cold-weather hobby what with all the mittens, hats, and scarves, but as the resident Stitchy Bitch here, I can tell you that we knitters work on projects year round and sometimes in unlikely places. I’m a big fan of beach knitting, myself.

To celebrate our crafty readers we’ll be doing three giveaways this summer, each featuring a different creative hobby.

The theme for June is knitting because I picked it and frankly, I’m biased.

A llama zip tote, some beautiful yarn, a knitting bag, and two books - all summer long by dot frank and the last summer by judith kinghorn

Beach knitting is the best knitting--especially when you're too pale to tan!
Beach knitting is the best knitting–especially when you cannot tan!

Here’s what’s included:

  • A Jane Austen project bag that features  quote from the lady herself, “She taught me to knit, which has been a great amusement.”
  • A Llamarama zip-top tool bag that would ideal for storing yarn needles, a tape measure, a small pair of scissors and other odds and ends.
  • A skein of yarn from one of my favorite indie dyers, Destination Yarns. All of their yarn colors are inspired by travel, and this particular color, Northern Lights, is GORGEOUS.The skein is 400 yards of fingering weight 100% super wash merino wool. If you are a sock knitter, let me tell you, this yarn is the shit. You could also make a shawlette or cowl or a hat.
  • A tin of Love and Leche’s Lavendar Mint Anywhere Balm. You can use it on your lips, your hands, or to polish the chest of your own romance hero.
  • A neon green sheep. This sheep serves no purpose but dammit, he’s awesome.
  • And of course there are books! You also get a copy of The Last Summer by Judith Klinghorn and All Summer Long by Dorothea Benton Frank.

Standard disclaimers apply: we are not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to knit, purl, and kick ass. Exposure to knitting has been known to cause addiction and terrifying yarn storage habits. Knitting discretion is advised. Comments will close and a winner will be chosen at random on Friday, 10 June at noon EST.

  1. shiny says:

I’ll be knitting in the air-conditioning, cause it is way too hot to even contemplate touching yarn much less knitting with it outside.

  2. Erin Gioia says:

Planning to knit I the car when roadtripping!

  3. Mary Star says:

I’m looking forward to taking my knitting show on the road! (Well, not the actual road. Driving + knitting = O.O) Becoming proficient enough to step away from the YouTube tutorials.

  4. Michelle in Texas says:

I don’t know how much crafting of any kind I’ll be able to do, due to LOTS of travel this summer, but kicked back with a cold adult beverage in the A/C is always a winner!

  5. SQ says:

By the water, in the shade. I’m still trying to learn how to knit, so this would be a great motivator!

  6. Lace says:

    Sheepie!

I may be ripping back my husband’s cabled sweater (stupid armholes), so I’ll definitely be re-knitting all that wool indoors with the AC on.

  7. Miss Louisa says:

In doctors’ offices and hospitals. Mom is testing then having surgery. I like to knit when my hands get fidgety because I can carry a conversation and have something to show from my nerves.

  8. @Elyse says:

@Miss Louisa Warm thoughts and good luck to your mom!

  9. Sally says:

Since it wouldn’t be diplomatic to knit through the staff meetings (despite overwhelming temptation), most of my knitting will be done in my chair in the living room watching the ball game.

    Go Blue Jays!

  10. Nicola Bullock says:

As its winter here I’ll be knitting in front of the fire. A pair of cosy socks sounds like the best project, whilst watching a good show of course.

  11. Allison says:

I’ll be knitting in my house with my air conditioning 🙂

  12. Gail Wood says:

I’ll be knitting while sitting outside on my deck under an umbrella, with my dogs by my side.

  13. Dawn A says:

I love crafting on the front porch while the cars drive by, but when it’s too hot I retreat inside to a comfy chair.

  14. Miss Louisa says:

Thank you, Elyse! Any good ju-ju coming our way is much appreciated.

  15. What a great prize package. In addition to in my arm chair, I plan on knitting pretty much everywhere I go. I’m most excited to knit on a cruise along the Seine next month.

  16. Suzanne Whitehouse says:

Knitting beside the pond on warm summer days…perfect!

  17. Sarah Parent says:

In my comfy chair while I listen to all the Dresden books on audible

  18. Jane Bailey says:

I plan to knit at the beach in Destin, FL next week!

  19. Jess says:

The back porch is very good for knitting.

  20. JennyF says:

Backyard, though this is looking like a bad year for ticks in Michigan so will be slightly cautious 🙁 will also try to find a little beach on a lake somewhere!

  21. Erin Malahowski says:

At swimming lessons! In the car! On the couch! At my parents’ house! Pretty much everywhere.

  22. Kim says:

Big plan is to knit at the lake house – my SIL and I will sit on the patio and knit while our boys reminisce about their childhood with my FIL. As it will be hot in Indiana, I have a cotton blend in mind for my project!

  23. Katie Combs says:

The park down by the river, weather permitting or my comfy chair while watching Netflix!

  24. GHN says:

I am right now working on Southern Skies for my SIL – a circular shawl that doubles as a star chart! i also have a couple of other shawls on the needles – I’m obsessed with lace shawls these days. I usually knit in my living room (which is the practical thing to do when I incorporate beads – I have things set up very very well in my computer corner there), but may start to take it outside now that I’ve started to get somewhere with the garden.

  25. Elizabeth Benjamin says:

In my comfy chair in my air conditioned den, dreaming about the beach!

  26. JH says:

In the car on road trips – only time I’m not chasing my toddler!

  27. Amy says:

I plan to do a bit of knitting by the pool, and maybe also finally take a “my first sweater” class!

  28. Helen says:

I broke my right arm, so I’m kind of on the injured list, which is a bummer as I’ve turned the heel on a second sock! BUT I hope I win as I’ve not reached SABLE, at least I don’t think so.

  29. Amber says:

    On our screened-in back porch.

  30. SueX. says:

On the couch, in front of the TV. I just need to keep my hands busy 🙂

  31. Trish says:

I’ll be knitting all over the place — with my local knitting group, at home, in the garden behind my apartment building, in the park, on several planes, and at work (thank goodness for long telecons!)

  32. Mary Preston says:

I do most of my knitting when I visit my mother. We chat. We knit. Love it.

  33. Isua says:

I’ve got a pair of three year olds who like to yell “Yarn! Mommy yarn!” and then start yanking every time I pull out my knitting, so I think I may try knitting at work on my lunch hour. I’ve got a baby sock I’ve been trying to finish for two months now. It’s embarassing, it should have taken a day!

  34. Tiffany says:

I want to get new chairs for our deck, our current chairs are old and gross and hold water in a deceptive way that makes the chair look dry, but then you end up looking like you peed your pants. However, right now most my knitting has been carried out in the break room at Lowe’s where I work.

  35. Michele H. says:

I just bought myself a learn to crochet kit, and the project is making characters from Peanuts gang. I will crochet out on my new patio furniture.

  36. Alaina Keener says:

on my couch! i love my couch.

  37. Karen says:

Knitting in the usual places: at my knitting group at the Starbucks in Arlington, MA; and during church. Additionally for the summer will be several car trips: my college reunion (about 6 hours away) and a wedding in my hometown (about 11 hours away). With luck, I’ll get to knit on the porch at my in-laws’ summer place next to a lake in NH. This sounds like I will get a lot of knitting done, but I am not terribly speedy…

  38. NitaB says:

I knit riding shotgun in our van while my hubby drives as we make our biannual cross country drive to visit family.

  39. Faye says:

On my porch in Alaska, waiting for the northern lights to be visible once more!

  40. Rose F says:

Learning to knit socks – will be at home for most of the summer – the best place to be!
