Summertime is the perfect time for crafting.
Knitting might seem like a cold-weather hobby what with all the mittens, hats, and scarves, but as the resident Stitchy Bitch here, I can tell you that we knitters work on projects year round and sometimes in unlikely places. I’m a big fan of beach knitting, myself.
To celebrate our crafty readers we’ll be doing three giveaways this summer, each featuring a different creative hobby.
The theme for June is knitting because I picked it and frankly, I’m biased.

Here’s what’s included:
- A Jane Austen project bag that features quote from the lady herself, “She taught me to knit, which has been a great amusement.”
- A Llamarama zip-top tool bag that would ideal for storing yarn needles, a tape measure, a small pair of scissors and other odds and ends.
- A skein of yarn from one of my favorite indie dyers, Destination Yarns. All of their yarn colors are inspired by travel, and this particular color, Northern Lights, is GORGEOUS.The skein is 400 yards of fingering weight 100% super wash merino wool. If you are a sock knitter, let me tell you, this yarn is the shit. You could also make a shawlette or cowl or a hat.
- A tin of Love and Leche’s Lavendar Mint Anywhere Balm. You can use it on your lips, your hands, or to polish the chest of your own romance hero.
- A neon green sheep. This sheep serves no purpose but dammit, he’s awesome.
- And of course there are books! You also get a copy of The Last Summer by Judith Klinghorn and All Summer Long by Dorothea Benton Frank.
Standard disclaimers apply: we are not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to knit, purl, and kick ass. Exposure to knitting has been known to cause addiction and terrifying yarn storage habits. Knitting discretion is advised. Yarn envy is a serious condition and should be remedied as soon as possible. Knitting side effects may include SABLE (Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy); please contact your local knitting circle immediately if you or someone you know has reached this state. Comments will close and a winner will be chosen at random on Friday, 10 June at noon EST.
To enter just leave a comment below telling us where you plan to knit this summer. The beach? The cabin? Your backyard? Please share! And good luck!
UPDATE: The winner is Jess, who picked her own back porch for a great knitting spot!

Moving to a new house in July and can’t wait to knit under the shade trees in my backyard!
I plan on knitting anywhere and everywhere this summer!
I plan to knit everywhere this summer, but especially in an overstuffed armchair at the lake in Hayward, WI. I am working on a pair of trekking socks, a sweater, a cowl… The possibilities are endless.
I knit in cars while others drive…great light helps with a visual problem, plus its peaceful!
Just as an aside: my aunt knits on her exercise bike (in her living room in front of the TV).
Me: Don’t your hands get sweaty with the bicycling?
Aunt: Nope.
Me: OK then.
In my house in the AC! But if I win this I’ll be giving it to my lovely mother, to knit on her porch overlooking a lake in Vermont (no, I’m totally not jealous 😉
my sunporch watching my kids splash in the sprinkler.
I just got a table and chairs for my balcony, so I plan to sit out there with a glass of wine in the evenings (when they’re cooler than 80F).
I’ll be knitting in a comfy chair with a steady supply of tea on hand.
Everywhere. On a plane, at the beach, watching TV, at barbecues, on picnics. Maybe I’ll knit and hike if I feel adventurous enough. I don’t know that I can function without it.
Work, and a Rockies baseball game.
Everywhere! But I’m most excited about knitting on the plane on my way to vacation. I’m working on a linen lace top right now that will be perfect for the weather.
I will knit at all my husband’s surgery follow-up appointments, starting tomorrow. I will also knit while camping (Lake Crescent? Hot Springs? exact location TBA.)
My back porch! And at a lake in the Adirondacks!
On the swing on our backyard deck!
Everywhere! Socks at brunch, tank top on the couch in front of the fan, shawl while playing tour guide when my sister visits, and starting a Rhinebeck sweater while on vacation! Sweater pattern is picked (Coastal Pullover by Hannah Fettig), vacation destination TBD.
I don’t knit but my daughter does. That neon green sheep is seriously cute!
My front porch with a glass of wine!
We are in the midst of exams here, so I knit while I invigilate. At the moment, I’m knitting a skirt. It was supposed to be for winter last year… let’s see if I finish it in time for winter next year!
I’m dealing with knitter’s elbow (basically golfer’s elbow caused by knitting) so I’ll be happy if it heals enough for me to knit anywhere this summer.
Happy knitting to all! I’ll be over here being jealous.
It looks like my summer knitting is going to happen on my back deck. As long as the mosquitos aren’t too terrible.
I will be knitting on the el, on my lunch hour at work huddled at my desk, on my favorite bench by Lake Michigan in the mornings (with Starbucks), on my sofa and (on hot days) in the theater before the coming attractions. By the end of the summer I will be READY because winter is coming…
I’ll be becoming one with my couch! I’ll probably also have either something on Netflix or a glorious audiobook to keep me going through the night until I realize that I should maybe stop and sleep… But there’s always just one more row!
Air conditioned house and on road trips!
This summer – two weeks on a Florida beach listening to audiobooks while knitting and enjoying mixed drinks followed up by one week attending American Library Association Annual conference where I knit while listening to presenters. 🙂
The train! I’m taking the train down to see some relatives soon and I will be knitting all the way!
This giveaway looks amazing! I finished a really pretty lace shawlette recently and since then I’ve fallen deep into the Ravelry hole of wrap and shawl patterns — oh the things I’d do with that pretty yarn!
The pool!
i will be crocheting/knitting during family reunion
I gather with my stichin’ pals at the library. We talk yarn, stitchin’ and books, of course.
On the balcony, looking out at the lake.
Hopefully in our family room, where we can be lounging, rather than in the car as I wait for kids to be done with various activities 😉 What a charming collection for the giveaway!
Maybe in line at Comic-Con in San Diego!
My favourite place to knit is in front of our fire pit. Unfortunately it is also my favourite place to drink cocktails as well…so my favourite place to frog my project and REknit is in my craft room with the doors locked.
I carry my knitting with me at all times. This enables me to knit at odd moments such as: in restaurants waiting to be served; during meetings to help keep me focused; hanging out with friends; waiting for appointments; and sitting at home watching tv. Yes I knit everywhere!
I generally knit everywhere, especially during work meetings. How else can I survive them?
I’m heading to Iceland, where the temperature and weather conditions will likely change with impressive speed several times a day. Hoping to meet some of the sheep that provide the famous Lopi wool, too! I might knit in the car as a friend and I are sharing a drive around the Ring Road, but I suspect we will need two pairs of eyes on the… interesting Icelandic roads, so perhaps a relaxing knit at the end of the day is on the cards.
Wow, that is an epic prize pack! I will knit in the airport to keep from going insane waiting for the plane to depart for vacation! Also, probably a cafe, because when do I not knit at a cafe?
I get to do a lot of petsitting this summer, so that means knitting poolside and on other people’s well-kept patios with lovely furry companions. A charmed life, it is, for sure!
I will be on my balcony with a glass of wine watching the city go by, or if it rains, on my couch watching Outlander.
I usually knit while my son is at swim practice or at karate lessons.
