Links: Ballet, Jane the Virgin, & Dogs!

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses. It’s time for Wednesday Links! Also, is anyone else having trouble keeping track of what day it is? Elyse keeps thinking it’s Thursday. I keep thinking we’ve reached the weekend.

We’re about halfway through our RITA® Reader Challenge! There are still several slots open, either due to a book not having reviewers or no reviews coming in on a book’s due date. Just look for the empty gray-shaded cells. Here’s a brief rundown on how to sign up! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.

We’re fans of Jane the Virgin here at SBTB HQ and Vulture has a great interview with showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman. They talk about the season two finale, love triangles, and romance novels:

And because the show operates on such a meta level, it very much feels like a defense of the romance genre.

A little bit. You always get people saying, it’s a guilty pleasure. The feeling is, why would you feel guilty? Why isn’t it just a plain old pleasure? Part of that is that romance is seen as more female genre. It doesn’t have all the signifiers of deep, meditative, thicker work that we normally give more weight to. And I don’t feel like that is either accurate or fair. Jane’s defense of genre is the show’s defense of genre.

If you haven’t jumped on the Jane the Virgin bandwagon yet, there’s no time like the present.

The next two links come from Reader Lisa, who is definitely aware of our love of awesome dancing and cute animals!

Tula is quickly making a name for herself as a photographer. Tula is also a dog. The Washington Post profiles Tula and her Go Pro photography. Outfitted with a Go Pro, Tula captures some great photos of dogs from her perspective. Here’s what her owner had to say about the idea:

“I’ve always loved photography, and I’ve always loved dogs,” 17-year-old Susie Kixmoeller said. “So when we started taking Tula to the dog park about a year ago, I’d go along and I’d see how interesting the interactions between the dogs are, like how they play together and all that stuff.

“And so I started to try and get pictures of that, on my own camera. But the thing about when they are playing together is that if I get close enough to actually capture it well, they’re going to stop playing ,and they’re going to look at me because I’m too close to them.”

But, Susie thought, if Tula wore the camera, then she could capture those interactions, and the photos would be from her point of view.

If you’re having a crappy day, seriously…just go look at these dogs and their goofy, happy faces.

The second link from Reader Lisa is this amazing video of 52-year-old ballet dancer, Alessandra Ferri, dancing alongside a hologram of her 19-year-old self:

Meanwhile, I haven’t even gotten dressed today.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

  2. cleo says:

Quick question about the RITA sign up sheet – if the field is gray but it has a name in it, is it open or taken?

  3. @Amanda says:

@Cleo: If there’s a name, that means it’s been taken. Only empty gray cells are open slots. Hope that answers your question!

  4. Christy says:

Getting dressed on a daily basis is highly overrated

  5. flchen1 says:

Wow–that Alessandra is a beautiful dancer! Inspiring to see she’s even lovelier at 52!

  6. Margaret says:

Thank you for sharing that link. I had heard about the serum ad but not yet seen it – let’s hear it for women aging with moxie!
