  • Furiously Happy

    Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

RECOMMENDED: Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched at other sites, so we’re starting off strong! Elyse loved this book and how it helped her deal with chronic pain. She gave it an A:

Furiously Happy is a rare book, a combination of ridiculous humor and poignant reflection. I think anyone who has suffered from a stigmatized illness will identify with Lawson’s honest, sometimes heartbreaking, description of her own pain. It’s still an uplifting book though, and that’s important. Lawson believes in celebrating small victories and quiet bravery. I get that. Sometimes you’re proud because hey, you got out of bed and showered today but you can’t post that on Facebook because other people don’t get it (and you’ll get shitty comments “Wow, I trained for my half marathon and worked 12 hours.” NOBODY CARES, GARY).

For fans of David Sedaris, Tina Fey, and Mindy Kaling-the new book from Jenny Lawson, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

In Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Jenny Lawson baffled readers with stories about growing up the daughter of a taxidermist. In her new book,Furiously Happy, Jenny explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. And terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

According to Jenny: “Some people might think that being ‘furiously happy’ is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he’s never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos.”

“Most of my favorite people are dangerously fucked-up but you’d never guess because we’ve learned to bare it so honestly that it becomes the new normal. Like John Hughes wrote in The Breakfast Club, ‘We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.’ Except go back and cross out the word ‘hiding.'”

Jenny’s first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, was ostensibly about family, but deep down it was about celebrating your own weirdness.Furiously Happy is a book about mental illness, but under the surface it’s about embracing joy in fantastic and outrageous ways-and who doesn’t need a bit more of that?

  • First Grave on the Right

First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

RECOMMENDED: First Grave on the Right is the first book in Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series, and it’s $2.99 right now. Here’s what Sarah had to say:

When I’ve been at conferences with Jones, readers and authors come up to her and tell her how much they love this series. This book won the Golden Heart in 2009, and the RITA for Best First Book in 2012. The heroine, Charley, is terrific. I listened to the audiobook performance by Lorelei King (after buying the Kindle copy on sale I was offered a discounted audio copy) and it was really good. I didn’t want to stop walking the dogs, that’s for sure.

Private investigator Charlotte Davidson was born with three things: looks; a healthy respect for the male anatomy; and the rather odd job title of grim reaper. Since the age of five, she has been helping the departed solve the mysteries of their deaths so they can cross over. Thus, when three lawyers from the same law firm are murdered, they come to her to find their killer.

In the meantime, Charley’s dealing with a being more powerful – and definitely sexier – than any spectre she’s ever come across before. With the help of a pain-in-the-ass skip tracer, a dead pubescent gangbanger named Angel, and a lifetime supply of sarcasm, Charley sets out to solve the highest profile case of the year and discovers that dodging bullets isn’t nearly as dangerous as falling in love.

  • Every Heart a Doorway

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is $2.99! I originally found out about this book from Reader MirandaB on a previous Hide Your Wallet post and had to get my hands on it. Several readers also picked it up and mentioned it in the comments of Whatcha Reading? May 2016 Edition. Readers loved the world McGuire created, but be warned that the book is rather short.

Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
    No Solicitations
    No Visitors
    No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

    No matter the cost.

  • Born of Night

Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon is $2.99! This is the first book in her League paranormal/scifi romance series. Honestly, I had mixed feelings about this one – the heroine grated on me and I felt the romance lacked realistic pacing, but the worldbuilding and secondary characters were enough to get me to continue with the series. Have you read this one?

Awakened from a drugged sleep in a cold cell, the Princess Kiara finds herself a prisoner of the merciless marauders who threaten her father’s planetary kingdom. Miraculously, a rescuer appears, but behind his fearsome mask is the handsome face of a dark avenger whose outlaw touch sets her very soul aflame.

They call him Nemesis. Once a renegade assassin, now a warrior-soldier sworn to protect the innocent from the ruthless mercenaries throughout the galaxies, he has many enemies. Besieged on every side, he knows he is a danger to the beauty he saves from certain death. But the lovely Kiara stirs a hungry longing in his battle-hardened heart, spurring him into a struggle that could restore his honor and heal the wounds of a beleaguered empire — or tear Kiara from his arms forever….

Yeees! I have been waiting for the Seanan McGuire Kindle book to drop in price before pulling the trigger. (In my defence: I’ve bought all of her October Daye series, the Incryptid books, her zombie series, Indexing and Sparrow Hill Road).

Just finished the audiobook of Furiously Happy and loved it – highly recommend! And I’m one-clocking the Seanan McGuire. Several of the Kindle sale books today are still in hardcover so these are some serious savings, and also there are several more if you check the kindle daily deal page

Any Detective Fiona Griffiths fans: Author Harry Bingham just announced THE DEAD HOUSE, book five, for pre-order at $2.99 at Amazon US (and equivalent at UK and CA), due July 29. That may have been my fastest click ever. Now the vigil wait begins.

  6. Penny says:

Darn..missed Furiously Happy! Read Jenny’s Houston Chronicle blog years ago, then thebloggess, and her first book, but haven’t read her newer stuff. Need to spend some time on her blog…if you haven’t read her stuff…she’s a hoot!
