  • A Golden Cage

    Genre: ,
    Series: Newport Gilded Age #2

The author of A Gilded Grave returns to Newport, Rhode Island, at the close of the nineteenth century, where headstrong heiress Deanna Randolph must solve another murder among the social elite.

With her mother in Europe, Deanna is staying with the Ballard family, who agree to chaperone her through the summer season and guide her toward an advantageous marriage proposal—or so her mother hopes. Relishing her new freedom, Deanna is more interested in buying one of the fashionable new bathing costumes, joining a ladies’ bicycling club, and befriending an actress named Amabelle Deeks, all of which would scandalize her mother.

Far more scandalous is the discovery of a young man bludgeoned to death on the conservatory floor at Bonheur, the Ballards’ sumptuous “cottage.” Deanna recognizes him as an actor who performed at the birthday fete for a prominent judge the night before. But why was he at Bonheur? And where is Amabelle?

Concerned her new friend may be in danger—or worse—Deanna enlists the help of her intrepid maid, Elspeth, and her former beau, Joe Ballard, to find Amabelle before the villain of this drama demands an encore.

Elyse saysA historical mystery set in Newport in the Gilded Age. Basically total Elyse-Bait.

    Author: Kristen Callihan
Released: June 7, 2016 by Plain Jane
    Genre: , ,
    Series: VIP #1

    Libby

I found Killian drunk and sprawled out on my lawn like some lost prince. With the face of a god and the arrogance to match, the pest won’t leave. Sexy, charming, and just a little bit dirty, he’s slowly wearing me down, making me crave more.

He could be mine if I dare to claim him. Problem is, the world thinks he’s theirs. How do you keep an idol when everyone is intent on taking him away?

    Killian

As lead singer for the biggest rock band in the world, I lived a life of dreams. It all fell apart with one fateful decision. Now everything is in shambles.

Until Liberty. She’s grouchy, a recluse —and kind of cute. Scratch that. When I get my hands on her, she is scorching hot and more addictive than all the fans who’ve screamed my name.

The world is clamoring for me to get back on stage, but I’m not willing to leave her. I’ve got to find a way to coax the hermit from her shell and keep her with me. Because, with Libby, everything has changed. Everything.

Amanda saysI’m not big on rockstars but I love Callihan’s writing. The heroine is described as a recluse and I’m curious how she’ll handle her houseguest’s fame.

    Genre:

An instant page-turner (Lisa Gardner) that straddles the line between thriller and horror…sure to appeal to a wide range of readers, including Stephen King fans. Visited by people whom others can’t see and haunted by prophetic dreams, she has never been able to control or understand the things that happen to her. When Finley’s abilities start to become too strong for her to handle – and even the roar of her motorcycle or another dazzling tattoo can’t drown out the voices – she turns to the only person she knows who can help her: her grandmother Eloise Montgomery, a renowned psychic living in The Hollows, New York.

Merri Gleason is a woman at the end of her tether after a ten-month-long search for her missing daughter, Abbey. As a harsh white winter moves into The Hollows, Finley and Eloise are drawn into the investigation, which proves to have much more at stake than even the fate of a missing girl. • Grunt

    Grunt by Mary Roach

    Author: Mary Roach
    Released: June 7, 2016 by W. W. Norton & Company
    Genre:

Best-selling author Mary Roach explores the science of keeping human beings intact, awake, sane, uninfected, and uninfested in the bizarre and extreme circumstances of war.

Grunt tackles the science behind some of a soldier’s most challenging adversaries—panic, exhaustion, heat, noise—and introduces us to the scientists who seek to conquer them.

Mary Roach dodges hostile fire with the U.S. Marine Corps Paintball Team as part of a study on hearing loss and survivability in combat. She visits the fashion design studio of U.S. Army Natick Labs and learns why a zipper is a problem for a sniper. She visits a repurposed movie studio where amputee actors help prepare Marine Corps medics for the shock and gore of combat wounds. At Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti, in east Africa, we learn how diarrhea can be a threat to national security. Roach samples caffeinated meat, sniffs an archival sample of a World War II stink bomb, and stays up all night with the crew tending the missiles on the nuclear submarine USS Tennessee. She answers questions not found in any other book on the military: Why is DARPA interested in ducks? How is a wedding gown like a bomb suit? Why are shrimp more dangerous to sailors than sharks?

Take a tour of duty with Roach, and you’ll never see our nation’s defenders in the same way again.

Amanda saysI will read anything Mary Roach writes. She makes science so much fun!

  • Romeo and/or Juliet

Romeo and/or Juliet by Ryan North

    Author: Ryan North
Released: June 7, 2016 by Riverhead Books
    Genre: ,

Romeo loves Juliet. Or Rosaline. And Juliet loves Romeo. Or Viola. Or Orlando. It’s Shakespeare as you’ve never played him before.

In this choose-your-own-path version of Romeo and Juliet, you choose where the story goes every time you read! What if Romeo never met Juliet? What if Juliet got really buff instead of moping around the castle all day? What if they teamed up to take over Verona with robot suits? Whatever your adventure, you’re guaranteed to find lots of romance, lots of epic fight scenes, and plenty of questionable decision-making by very emotional teens.

All of the endings—there are over a hundred—feature beautiful illustrations by some of the greatest artists working today, including New York Times bestsellers Kate Beaton, Noelle Stevenson, Randall Munroe, and Jon Klassen.

Packed with exciting choices, fun puzzles, secret surprises, terrible puns, and more than a billion possible storylines, Romeo and/or Juliet offers a new experience every time you read it. You can choose to play as Romeo or Juliet (obviously) but you can also play as both of them, or as Juliet’s nurse, or, if you’re good, you can even unlock a fourth playable character! That’s right. We figured out how to have unlockable characters in books.

Amanda saysThough I hated the last Choose Your Own Adventure book I reviewed here, this one seems a little more comical and pretty darn cute. Hamlet

  • I’m Just a Person

I’m Just a Person by Tig Notaro

    Author: Tig Notaro
Released: June 14, 2016 by Ecco
    Genre: ,

One of America’s most original comedic voices delivers a darkly funny, wryly observed, and emotionally raw account of her year of death, cancer, and epiphany.

In the span of four months in 2012, Tig Notaro was hospitalized for a debilitating intestinal disease called C.Diff, her mother unexpectedly died, she went through a breakup, and was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. Hit with this devastating barrage, Tig took her grief onstage. Days after receiving her cancer diagnosis, she broke new comedic ground, opening an unvarnished set with the words, “Good evening. Hello. I have cancer. How are you? Hi, how are you? Is everybody having a good time? I have cancer.” Word of the set went viral instantly. This set was ultimately released as Tig’s sophomore album, Live, which sold 100,000 units in just six weeks and was nominated for a Grammy.

Now, the wildly popular star takes stock of that no good, very bad year—a difficult yet astonishing period in which tragedy turned into absurdity and despair into joy. An inspired combination of the deadpan silliness of her comedy and the open-hearted vulnerability that has emerged in the wake of that dire time, Untitled is a moving and often hilarious look at this very brave, very funny woman’s journey through the darkness and her thrilling return.

Amanda saysI love Tig’s dry and often self-deprecating humor, so I’m interested to see how that translates in a book.

All my life I’ve tried to be like you. I’ve failed.

    So I keep it hidden.

But on the day my world crashed down around me, Reed was there. He showed me just how loud and vibrant silence can be, even when I struggled to understand. He’s unlike anyone I’ve ever known. His soulful eyes and strong hands pulled me in before I knew what was happening.

And as I saw those hands sign, felt them sparking on me, I knew: imperfect could be perfect.

Reed makes me feel things I’ve never felt. It’s exciting…and terrifying. Because he sees me like no one else has, and I’m afraid of what he’ll find if he looks too closely.

  • Just a Girl

Just a Girl by Ellie Cahill

    Author: Ellie Cahill
Released: June 21, 2016 by Loveswept
    Genre: ,

In this pitch-perfect novel from the author of When Joss Met Matt (“One of those books that make you forget everything around you.”—Sophie Jordan), a rock ’n’ roll diva must choose between her career and her heart.

After getting kicked out of her own band—by her own boyfriend—Presley Mason finds herself back in Wisconsin, helping her parents run their renowned music store. Instead of belting out powerhouse vocals to sold-out crowds in L.A., she’s stocking shelves and inspecting rental violins. But the shop isn’t all bad: When she’s vacuuming up late one night, she bumps into the guitar teacher with the smoldering amber eyes and the killer tattoo. And that’s when things take an interesting turn.

Presley soon finds that Paul Kellerman is as good in bed as he is on guitar. So why isn’t he stoked to share his band, Jukebox Bleu, with her? Turns out Paul has crippling stage fright, which he’s been self-medicating without much success. But when Jukebox Bleu’s lead singer gets called for military service, the other members beg Presley to front them. Even though she swore never to mix men with music again, the temptation to perform is almost as intense as her chemistry with Paul. Now Presley must decide what’s more important: a second chance at love . . . or rock stardom.

Elyse saysI want to read this book because it features a female rockstar for once AND she lives in WI. Go Midwest!

  • The Bourbon Thief

The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz

    Author: Tiffany Reisz
Released: June 28, 2016 by MIRA
    Genre: ,

From the internationally celebrated author of the Original Sinners series comes a brand-new tale of betrayal, revenge and a family scandal that bore a 150-year-old mystery

When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it’s to discover he’s been robbed. The only item stolen—a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it’s property of the Maddox family who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows…no one except Paris.

In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of Tamara Maddox, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. But the family tree is rooted in tainted soil and has borne rotten fruit. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. The Maddoxes have bourbon in their blood—and blood in their bourbon. Why Paris wants the bottle of Red Thread remains a secret until the truth of her identity is at last revealed, and the century-old vengeance Tamara vowed against her family can finally be completed.

Sarah saysThe writing that I’ve tried of Reisz’s has impressed me so much, but her previous series was not my thing on a number of levels. So I’m supremely curious about this book and whether this new book + her writing skills, which are considerable, will work for me.

  • How Not to Fall

How Not to Fall by Emily Foster

    Author: Emily Foster
Released: June 28, 2016 by Kensington
    Genre: , ,
Series: How Not to Fall #1

In her witty and breathtakingly sexy novel, Emily Foster introduces a story of lust, friendship, and other unpredictable experiments. . .

Data, research, scientific formulae–Annabelle Coffey is completely at ease with all of them. Men, not so much. But that’s all going to change after she asks Dr. Charles Douglas, the postdoctoral fellow in her lab, to have sex with her. Charles is not only beautiful, he is also adorably awkward, British, brilliant, and nice. What are the odds he’d turn her down?

Very high, as it happens. Something to do with that whole student/teacher/ethics thing. But in a few weeks, Annie will graduate. As soon as she does, the unlikely friendship that’s developing between them can turn physical–just until Annie leaves for graduate school. Yet nothing could have prepared either Annie or Charles for chemistry like this, or for what happens when a simple exercise in mutual pleasure turns into something as exhilarating and infernally complicated as love.

Amanda saysEver since I heard about this awesome book of smart being doing sexy sex things on the podcast we did with Emily, I just HAD to have it.

Redheadedgirl saysI just want to second HOW GOOD THIS BOOK IS.

  1. Kate says:

I have been waiting for “Stiletto” FOREVER. I am PUMPED.

Also, I will be reading Tig Notaro’s memoir as soon as I can get my hands on it!

  2. Madge says:

FOREVERMORE!!! I was worried that now that Callihan’s moved into NA she’d never write Sinjin’s story/finish the Darkest London series. Am so glad my fears have been misplaced. Oh, if only there were more romance series like this one….

  3. Vivienne says:

Read Stiletto last week (already released in Australia) and it comes very close to being as good as The Rook. Slow start lets it down a bit but I love his strong female characters.

  4. OMG MARY ROACH. All of her books are fascinating and hilarious, often with an odd sort of profundity in all the weirdness. (Also, be warned, really gross.)

  5. Chris Alexander says:

Gah. I didn’t need more books on my TBR!!

  6. sam says:

I am a massive Mary Roach fan, but /Grunt/ was a let-down: her balance was off in this one. Much sadness. I snagged a review copy from NetGalley (go there, you want to) and my review is over here, if you want: http://blustocking.blogspot.com/2016/05/the-cache.html

  7. bookworm1990 says:

Wow. I’d finally made a dent in my TBR list, and now all that work has been sabotaged in the best possible way.

  8. Dena says:

I’ve read The Invisible Library and Stiletto and they’re both fantastic. Grunt is classic Mary Roach – Not as good as Stiff and Packing for Mars, better than Bonk and Gulp.

  9. Crystal says:

    STILETTO!!!!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEE!!!

    I NEED IT.

Okay, now that my capsquee has worked itself out, I might need to read the Mary Roach one too. Or, well, listen to it. I like my nonfiction read to me.

  10. Pupcubs!!!!!! Also *sob*, Allegiance of HonoUr releases two days after everyone else gets to read Allegiance of Honor.

Alisha Rai’s Tess’ story part 2 releases in June…so tweeteth she. Woo hoo, tweeteth I. (Sorry, I’m excited.)

I’m currently reading Gambled Away, an anthology released 31 May by a group of awesome historical authors: Joanna Bourne, Isabel Cooper, Rose Lerner, Jeannie Lin, and Molly O’Keefe…wheeee! (What historical slump, I ask.) I’m skipping around and loving the novellas. (SB Sarah, Rose Lerner’s story has a Jewish heroine with insecurities and issues and kinks and I heart her so much!)

  11. Mara says:

The “Stiletto” release date has been teasing me for literally years at this point so I am PUMPED! Also, Nalini Singh should just have a direct withdrawal from my bank account at this point, tbh

  12. DonnaMarie says:

Pretty excited for Forevermore. As much as I hate to see this series end, I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for this book.

Speaking of series I’m sad to see go, I scored an arc or League of Dragons from GoodReads. I’m one chapter in and totally hooked, It’s going pretty much as you’d expect for Temeraire and Laurence stranded in Russia during the winter.

  13. Mary Star says:

@Madge, loved the series, too! Bec McMaster has a series with a similarish vibe that I really enjoyed.

  14. ReneeG says:

Wow! So much book lust that I don’t know who to wave my card at first.

  15. Hera says:

League of Dragons! I’m so excited but at the same time so sad to be saying goodbye to Temeraire. It’s my ultimate comfort read; I’ve read every book in the series at least three times, plus listened to the audiobooks at least once (and I usually only listen to audiobooks of nonfiction). This book coming out is a serious emotional event for me!

  16. Maite says:

Main reason to recommend The Invisible Library: Irene. I don’t think I’ve ever read such a practical, reasonable protagonist. The floor can disappear between her feet and she’ll just handle it without panic and make it to safety.

  17. Madge says:

@Mary Star – Yes, I heart McMasters’s London Steampunk series, too! (Her new Dark Arts series, not so much, which makes me sad. The first book in this series is titled Shadowbound, which I DNF.)

    Thanks for the recommendation!

  18. Mary Star says:

@Madge, you’re welcome! That’s unfortunate about the new series :(. I was excited to see it when I checked her page. Are there any other series with a similar feeling you’d recommend?

  19. Friday says:

You’re absolutely right. My book budget just got blown. Thanks ladies, this is terrific, feel free to do this to me anytime. I love finding new favourites.

  20. Linda says:

    > but after getting drunk at a party and waking up next to bad boy surfer Evan McKinley, the entire school seems intent on tearing Taylor down with mockery and gossip.

ughhhhhhhhh maybe it’s just the stanford case and what happened recently to my friend who’s rapist was not convicted, but I really think that the “we just woke up in bed together after getting drunk and remember nothing” *cue laugh track and wide eyed horror* trope really needs to die. I don’t know how it will be handled in this book, but this is really upsetting, especially since at trial, the defense argued that my friend “seduced” him, so this feels all too real.

  21. Patricia says:

Thanks for including major releases a lot of us may be anticipating! 🙂

Jessica Lemmon and Tiffany Reisz are such strong writers, but I’m still not quite sold on their new novels. I’ll wait for reviews.
