  • Don’t Tempt Me

Don’t Tempt Me by Loretta Chase

Don’t Tempt Me by Loretta Chase is $1.99! This is a historical romance, which Candy reviewed waaaay back in 2009. She gave it a B:

I think I can sum up the problems with this book thusly: it needed about 40 more pages, or about 20,000 more words. The book was tasty, but it was insubstantial, and it killed me that it could’ve been so much more—could’ve been GREAT, in fact, one of Chase’s best; as good as her best work so far, or even better. It could’ve been Chanel No. 5, and it ended up being yet another cheap body splash.

However, in Which One First post, Reader Ellielu advises against the book:

The writing felt hurried, the heroine made me cringe, and the married-to-a-sultan-but-still-conveniently-a-virgin-with-ridiculous-amounts-of-theoretical-knowledge-about-sex trope required more disbelief than I was willing to suspend.

Spunky English girl overcomes impossible odds and outsmarts heathen villains.

That’s the headline when Zoe Lexham returns to England. After twelve years in the exotic east, she’s shockingly adept in the sensual arts. She knows everything a young lady shouldn’t and nothing she ought to know. She’s a walking scandal, with no hope of a future . . . unless someone can civilize her.

Lucien de Grey, the Duke of Marchmont, is no knight in shining armor. He’s cynical, easily bored, and dangerous to women. He charms, seduces, and leaves them—with parting gifts of expensive jewelry to dry their tears. But good looks, combined with money and rank, makes him welcome everywhere. The most popular bachelor in the Beau Monde can easily save Zoe’s risqué reputation . . . if the wayward beauty doesn’t lead him into temptation, and a passion that could ruin them both.

  • Beautiful Wreck

    Beautiful Wreck by Larissa Brown

Beautiful Wreck by Larissa Brown is 99c! This is a time travel romance with Vikings! Readers loved the characterization, but found the beginning of the book to be hard to get into and a little slow in terms of pacing. However, it has a 4-star rating on Goodreads. Have you read this one?

In a bleak future built on virtual reality, Ginn is a romantic who yearns for something real. She designs environments for people who play at being Vikings. But when her project goes awry, she’s stranded in the actual 10th century, on a storybook farm in Viking Iceland.

Heirik is the young leader of his family, honored by the men and women who live on his land. But he is feared and isolated because of a terrible curse. Ginn and Heirik are two people who never thought they would find a home in someone else’s heart.

When forces rise against them to keep them apart, Ginn is called on to decide—will she give up the brutal and beautiful reality of the past? Or will she have the courage to traverse time and become more of a Viking than she ever imagined?

  • Goddess of the Hunt

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare is $1.99! If you like historical romances with house parties, this book was mentioned in the comments of a Rec League post. Sarah gave this a C, citing difficulties with the heroine:

I loved everything except the heroine, Lucy. And despite my joy at discovering such elegant and delicious writing, and a collection of characters I eagerly pursued through the pages of the novel, Lucy’s complete idiocy, stubbornness, and determination to ruin herself in the eyes of society and in the eyes of the reader made it impossible for me to truly enjoy the book as much as I wanted. Because of her, the grade dropped bit by bit until the skill of the writing and the joy of the other characters were at outright war with my snarls at Lucy.

In this lush and seductive novel, exciting new author Tessa Dare takes desire to brazen heights.

Ever the bold adventuress, Lucy Waltham has decided to go hunting for a husband. But first she needs some target practice. So she turns to her brother’s best friend, Jeremy Trescott, the Earl of Kendall, to hone her seductive wiles on him before setting her sights on another man. But her practice kisses spark a smoldering passion–one that could send all her plans up in smoke.

Jeremy has an influential title, a vast fortune, and a painful past full of long-buried secrets. He keeps a safe distance from his own emotions, but to distract Lucy from her reckless scheming, he must give his passions free rein. Their sensual battle of wills is as maddening as it is delicious, but the longer he succeeds in managing the headstrong temptress, the closer Jeremy comes to losing control. When scandal breaks, can he bring himself to abandon Lucy to her ruin? Or will he risk his heart and claim her for his own?

  • Accidentally Compromising the Duke

Accidentally Compromising the Duke by Stacy Reid

Accidentally Compromising the Duke by Stacy Reid is $3.99! This book was released last month and is the first book in the Wedded by Scandal series. Readers loved the hero and heroine and I was hard-pressed to find any negative reviews on Goodreads. The only one I could find mentioned that there wasn’t enough plot and intrigue, and that it had too much sex. It has a 4.3-star rating on Goodreads.

    England, 1817.

Miss Adeline Hays is out of options. Determined to escape marriage to a repugnant earl, Adeline plans to deliberately allow herself to be caught in a compromising position at a house party with the much kinder man she’d hoped to marry. Instead, Adeline accidentally enters the wrong chamber and tumbles into the bed of the mad duke.

Edmond Rochester, the duke of Wolverton, is seeking a wife to care for his two daughters. A young lady of sensibilities, accomplishment, and most importantly, one who he is not attracted to—a complete opposite of the bewitching beauty who traps him into marriage. But despite the lust he feels for his new duchess, Edmond is resolved to never allow them intimacy, refusing to ever again suffer the tormenting loss of a loved one.

That cover for “Accidentally Compromising … ” since when do Dukes in 1817 England wear velvet cargo pants? Heehee

  2. Darlynne says:

Sold on BEAUTIFUL WRECK on the strength of the blurb, something I seldom do. *click*

  3. Carolyn says:

I’d probably find these historical romances more enticing if it weren’t for some of the stupid titles. Referring to “Accidently Compromising the Duke”, of course. The Dare title is actually classy and the Chase one at least tries to rise above the norm. About 80% of the time I pass over a new-to-me author because of the stupid title. I just can’t erase that first impression.

  4. Lisa says:

Accidentally Compromising the Duke is reasonably good, though I wish the hero had had to face up to his controlling tendencies and grovel a tad more. And I’m not sure the central conflict was actually resolvable (pretty much, hero fears losing another wife to child birth, which given the time period is a pretty valid concern). But it’s not like birth control was a reliable solution then.

  5. Liv says:

I just one-clicked so fast on Beautiful Wreck that my head spun! Love a good time-travel romance.

  6. Liviania says:

chacha1, when did anybody ever wear velvet cargo pants?

  7. Dorothea says:

I agree that Don’t Tempt Me was very disappointing. We start with the harem-girl premise and wind up with servant problems? Bleh

  8. Cordy (not stuck in spam filter sub-type) says:

I’m sorry – am I the only person who is confused by the neck anatomy of the hero in Accidentally Compromising The Duke? It’s like a giraffe man swooping in from out of frame.

  9. SeventhWave says:

I bought Beautiful Wreck based on this recommendation, and had to come back and say THANK YOU!!! Just finished it, and it was lovely. Occasional first-novel wobbles, but overall a haunting and emotional read. Also nice and long which I really appreciate, as a fast reader! Hoping to see more from Larissa Brown.
