Historical Romances from Shana Galen, Grace Burrowes, & More!

  • Tremaine’s True Love

Tremaine’s True Love by Grace Burrowes

Tremaine’s True Love by Grace Burrowes is 99c! This is the first book in her newest series and a RITA nominee. A few readers found the romance a bit boring and slow, while others loved the characterization of the heroine and hero.

    Reader Qualisign gave it A-:

When I saw Grace Burrowes’ Tremaine’s True Love on the 2016 RITA review list, I grabbed it like a can of insect repellant in high bug season in the Northeast back-country. While I love a well written historical, until this review, I had never read anything by Burrowes. However, I had accidentally purchased a couple of her books a year ago when I was getting ready to write a 2015 RITA review of one of Tonya Burrows’ books. After realizing that the 2015 Burrows’ (no e) book dealt with SEALs and PTSD, I let the Burrowes’ (with an e) books sink down the list of my tbr e-pile, where they then faded into the ether. That was an error!

And Reader K Smith gave it an A-:

I beg you: read the book, don’t think about it. It is delightful, it is entrancing, it is perfectly crafted, emotionally satisfying entertainment. It is not morally improving. Art doesn’t have to be.

Tremaine St. Michael is firmly in trade and seeks only to negotiate the sale of some fancy sheep with the Earl of Bellefonte.

The earl’s sister, Lady Nita, is pragmatic, hard-working, and selfless, though Tremaine senses she’s also tired of her charitable obligations and envious of her siblings’ marital bliss.

Tremaine, having been raised among shepherds, can spot another lonely soul, no matter how easily she fools her own family. Neither Tremaine nor Nita is looking for love, but love comes looking for them.

  • Earls Just Want to Have Fun

Earls Just Want to Have Fun by Shana Galen

Earls Just Want to Have Fun by Shana Galen is 99c! This is another RITA nominee and the first book in the Convent Garden Cubs series. Some readers found the plot and characterization a little improbable, while other readers said the romance had a good balance of light moments and darker emotions. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

His heart may be the last thing she ever steals…

Marlowe is a pickpocket, a housebreaker-and a better actress than any professional on the stage. She runs with the Covent Garden Cubs, a gang of thieves living in the slums of London’s Seven Dials. It’s a fierce life, and Marlowe has a hard outer shell. But when she’s alone, she allows herself to think of a time before-a dimly remembered life when she was called Elizabeth.

Maxwell, Lord Dane, is intrigued when his brother, a hired investigator, ropes him into his investigation of the fiercely beautiful hellion. He teaches her to navigate the social morass of the ton, but Marlowe will not escape so easily. Instead, Dane is drawn into her dangerous world, where the student becomes the teacher and love is the greatest risk of all.

  • An Unexpected Wish

An Unexpected Wish by Eileen Richards

An Unexpected Wish by Eileen Richards is 99c! This is a Regency romance with a bit of a fairy tale feel to it with the penniless heroine and her mean (and of course, beautiful) sister. Some readers expressed issues with the writing style, but some really loved the heroine and how she dealt with her insecurities. Anyone interested?

    LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Anne Townsend doesn’t ask for much. Plain and poor, she’d settle for the funds to put food on the table. Making a wish on the fabled Fairy Steps is hardly a solid solution, but to see her two sisters taken care of, Anne’s willing to try anything. Yet when she finds herself suddenly surrounded with suitors, romance is now a possibility for the spinster everyone always ignored—except with the one man who will never want her…

Nathaniel Matthews has no time for courting. As the eldest, he has his family’s lost fortune to rebuild, and his reckless brother to manage before he gambles his future away. Odd that Nathaniel can think of little but kissing bright-eyed Anne, who seems to be fighting off admirers from all sides. Is it the country air, or is Nathaniel ready to discover that love has a magic all its own?

  • Lady Susan Plays the Game

Lady Susan Plays the Game by Janet Todd

Lady Susan Plays the Game by Janet Todd is $1.99! This isn’t necessarily a romance, but with Carrie’s intense love of Lady Susan and Love & Friendship, this retelling might be of interest to the Bitchery. There aren’t a lot of reviews for this on Goodreads, so tread carefully if you’re looking to pick this one up!

A must-read for any devotee of Jane Austen, Janet Todd’s bodice-ripping reimagining of Austen’s epistolary novel Lady Susan will capture your literary imagination and get your heart racing.

Austen’s only anti-heroine, Lady Susan, is a beautiful, charming widow who has found herself, after the death of her husband, in a position of financial instability and saddled with an unmarried, clumsy and over-sensitive daughter. Faced with the unpalatable prospect of having to spend her widowed life in the countryside, Lady Susan embarks on a serious of manipulative games to ensure she can stay in town with her first passion — the card tables. Scandal inevitably ensues as she negotiates the politics of her late husband’s family, the identity of a mysterious benefactor and a passionate affair with a married man.

Accurate and true to Jane Austen’s style, as befits Todd’s position as a leading Austen scholar, this second coming of Lady Susan is as shocking, manipulative and hilarious as when Jane Austen first imagined her.

Harlequin has a buy one get one free offer good for today. Coupon code SUMMERBOGO (one time use, expires at 11:59ET). It looks like you can use it for Avon books as well. It does say limited quantities, but I have 4 books in my cart right now and 2 show free.

Stocking up on some new releases for summer vacations! So far I have the latest historicals from Eloisa James, Lisa Kleypas, Julie Ann Long and Julia Quinn.

    Happy shopping!

  7. Lizzy says:

Earls Just Want to Have Fun is totally improbable. Buuuut, if you can completely suspend your disbelief it’s actually pretty fun. The book that followed it was just too much for me in the shark jumping territory but Earls was fun.

  8. SusanK says:

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me is on sale at Amazon for $0.99!!!
