  • Afterburn & Aftershock

Afterburn & Aftershock by Sylvia Day

Afterburn & Aftershock by Sylvia Day is $1.99! These are both novellas in the same series, and are contemporary erotic romances. Both books have a combined 3.9-star average. Of course, some of the complaints are that the series is a little short considering it’s composed of two novellas, but fans of Day loved the quick series read. Have you read this?

Available as a digital anthology for the first time from Cosmo Red-Hot Reads from Harlequin, enjoy Afterburn and Aftershock from America’s premier author of provocative fiction, #1 New York Times Bestselling author Sylvia Day. A sizzling miniseries about unexpected reunions, bittersweet revenge, and the fight for redemption.

    Afterburn

The realization that Jax still affected me so strongly was a jagged pill to swallow. He’d only been part of my life for five short weeks two years ago. But now he was back. Walking into a deal I’d worked hard to close. And God, he was magnificent. His eyes were a brown so dark they were nearly black. Thickly lashed, they were relentless in their intensity. Had I really thought they were soft and warm? There was nothing soft about Jackson Rutledge. He was a hard and jaded man, cut from a ruthless cloth.

In that moment I understood how badly I wanted to unravel the mystery of Jax. Bad enough that I didn’t mind how much it was going to cost me…

    Aftershock

When it came to playing games, my lover Jax was a master strategist. He pulled strings behind the closed doors of D.C.’s most powerful political players, and somehow still found time to nearly sideline my career. What he didn’t know was that when I didn’t like the rules, I threw them out and made my own. I wasn’t going to let Jax get away with it. I wasn’t going to let him get away at all.

I loved Jax enough that it was impossible to give up. Jax loved me enough that giving up was the only end he’d consider. He didn’t think I could swim with the sharks. It was entirely my pleasure to show him that I’d already dived in…

  • The Chief

    The Chief by Monica McCarty

RECOMMENDED: The Chief by Monica McCarty is $1.99! This is the first book in the Highland Guard series and Elyse gave it an A-:

The Chief isn’t McCarty’s best book (Highland Scoundrel is my all-time favorite of hers), but it does a lot of work setting up what will be a ten to twelve book series. And it’s full of Old Skool themes that I luurve so much. Seriously, Fabio should be on this cover. In a kilt.

AN ELITE FIGHTING FORCE UNLIKE THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN . . .

Scouring the darkest corners of the Highlands and Western Isles, Robert the Bruce handpicks ten warriors to help him in his quest to free Scotland from English rule. They are the best of the best, chosen for their superior skills in each discipline of warfare. And to lead his secret Highland Guard, Bruce chooses the greatest warrior of all.

The ultimate Highland warlord and a swordsman without equal, Tor MacLeod has no intention of being drawn into Scotland’s war against the English. Dedicated to his clan, the fiercely independent chief answers to no one—especially not to his alluring new bride, bartered to him in a bid to secure his command of the deadliest fighting force the world has ever seen. The treacherous chit who made her way to Tor’s bed may have won his hand, but she will never claim his heart.

Although her husband’s reputation is as fierce as his manner, Christina Fraser believes that something softer hides beneath his brutal shell. But the only warmth she feels is in their bed, in glorious moments of white-hot desire that disappear with the dawn. When Christina’s reckless bid to win her husband’s love goes awry and thrusts them into danger on the eve of war, Tor will face his ultimate battle: to save his wife and to open his heart—before it’s too late.

  • Spy Fall

    Spy Fall by Diana Quincy

Spy Fall by Diana Quincy is 99c! The heroine is a French paratrooper spy. Carrie gave this book a C grade because it was all over the place, but if you’re still looking to give the book a shot, it’s less than a $1. Here’s Carrie’s ultimate ruling on the romance:

I was let down by the end and the sex scenes veered wildly from sexy to awkward to appalling (DAD IN ROOM!), but boy, the verbal spying and the plot crazysauce was entertaining. It’s so sad that the end was rage inducing. In fact, if you skip the last chapter it’s a much better book. I’m giving it an even C for being all over the place in terms of quality – parts were an A, parts were an F, and there was whole lot of WTF in both good and bad ways. If you skip the last chapter, it’s a B.

When a fiery French parachutist lands on a drunken Lord Cosmo Dunsmore, he surmises she’s an angel sent from above. But is she a spy after something far more sinister than his debauched soul?

A fearless parachutist is out of her depth …

Mari Lamarre is gaining fame for her daring aeronautic endeavors, but her riskiest adventure begins when she collides with the darkly charismatic son of the Marquess of Aldridge. If her mission succeeds, Cosmo’s father will be ruined.

A rakehell falls for a dangerous woman …

Surrendering to a fierce passion, the two embark on a torrid affair, even as Cosmo vows to protect his family at all costs. But in doing so, will he risk losing the captivating beauty who’s swept into his life and made off with his heart?

  • Legacy of Kings

Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman

Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman is $1.99! I heard about this book when I attended Book Expo America two years ago and the author even dressed up to talk about her book, which really shows dedication, in my opinion. Herman also has a history background and it really shows, according to reviewers. However, others mentioned that the pace is pretty slow to start.

Imagine a time when the gods turn a blind eye to the agony of men, when the last of the hellions roam the plains, and evil stirs beyond the edges of the map. A time when cities burn, and in their ashes, empires rise.

Alexander, Macedon’s sixteen-year-old heir, is on the brink of discovering his fated role in conquering the known world, but finds himself drawn to a newcomer…

Katerina must navigate the dark secrets of court life while keeping hidden her own mission: kill the queen. But she doesn’t account for her first love…

Jacob will go to unthinkable lengths to win Katerina, even if it means having to compete with Hephaestion, a murderer sheltered by the prince.

And far across the sea, Zofia, a Persian princess and Alexander’s unmet betrothed, wants to alter her destiny by seeking the famed and deadly Spirit Eaters.

Weaving fantasy with the shocking details of real history, New York Times bestselling author of Sex with Kings Eleanor Herman reimagines the greatest emperor the world has ever known, Alexander the Great, in the first book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.

  1. Alex says:

Regarding THE CHIEF: This entire series is fantastic and the final installment was released just last week and it. Was. Awesome. Really sad to see it end though. The author does an amazing job with the history and each hero and heroine – while the heroes all conformed to a brawny, alpha-male, highlander type to some extent – had a really unique story.

  2. Linda says:

Not totally relevant, but what’s with the proliferation of terribly dated shoes on these newer book covers. Waiting for the Mansur Gavriel (or Maryam Nassir Zadeh) pastel mules to make a book cover appearance.

Glittery platform peep toe stilettos? I vaguely feel like I returned to the 2000s.(Although I guess high heels are already the bottom of the barrel when it comes to romance novel cover design.)

  3. MegS says:

I agree with @Alex: McCarty’s series is terrific. SO WELL RESEARCHED. She usually includes a lengthy commentary at the end that walks through her various sources and the decisions she made based on them. I highly recommend them.

  4. Lora says:

Legacy of Kings= Cover. So. Pretty.

    All the pretty.

  5. Lisa says:

I first read “Chief” as “Chef”. Totally different kind of book.

  6. I feel like the cover on The Chief is making some sort of symbolic statement but it’s way to subtle for me to grasp it.
