This HaBO comes from Lara, who is searching for a F/F romance she found in paperback at a bookstore:
I saw this book in a used bookstore a few years ago but didn’t pick it up, and I’ve always regretted it.
What little I remember about this story is that the heroine had an ex-girlfriend (who was also the main love interest, I think). It was the first time I’d ever seen a f/f romance in paperback, as opposed to digital, and I’m pretty sure it can’t be more than ten or fifteen years old.
The book was a contemporary fantasy, though I can’t remember what made it fantasy, and it took place in either New Mexico or Nevada — definitely started with an N and was in the desert. Maybe the heroine had some Native American ancestry, I think? Also, I seem to remember a sexy muscle car on the cover, but I might be confusing it with some other novel.
Can you help me, Obi-Wan Bitchery?
We’re Lara’s only hope! Also, the cover and heroine description remind me a lot of the Mercy Thompson series covers.

Grey Magic by Sarah Dreher?
Sounds a bit like the Sarah Jane Beauhall series, by J. A. Pitts. Heroine is a badass lesbian blacksmith who turns out be a dragon hunter. The first book is Black Blade Blues, and the second book in the series, Honeyed Words, has a motorcycle on the cover, which isn’t exactly a muscle car, but could be confused for one in a hazy memory. First book came out in 2010.
@Cassie – I read a description of the first book in that series ages ago and thought “OMG I want that, gimme” but I blush to admit I still haven’t gotten around to reading it. Thanks for the nudge up my TBR.
It could be Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey.
Agree with Mel that it could be Santa Olivia? The covers don’t have a car (to my memory) but a billowing trench coat that might look a little like a car shape?
@Cassie- side comment I usually enjoy urban fantasy types like that but couldn’t get into Black Blade Blues, i found the main character whined about everything!
Sorry for taking so long to check in — just had a baby, and computer time is scarce these days.
I’m not sure that any of these are the book I remember, but I definitely want to check out all three! The Mercy Thompson books most closely resemble the picture I have in my head of the cover, but they’re not f/f, I don’t think, so I don’t know.
Thanks for the suggestions, though. I certainly don’t mind having more books to add to the TBR pile 🙂
