Love & Friendship is a new movie out in select theaters May 13th, which stars Kate Becksinale, Chloe Sevigny, and Stephen Fry. Based on Jane Austen’s Lady Susan, filmmaker Whit Stillman reimagines the story in which Lady Susan achieves vindication. The film is pretty much Carrie bait, given that she adored Jane Austen’s Lady Susan.
So if you like Austen adaptations, check out both the Love & Friendship film, as well as the novelization which was published earlier this month!

To enter, comment below with some of your favorite retellings of classic literature!

West Side Story, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and Clueless are all fabulous modern retellings. Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing is marvelous fun as well.
Persuasion, the 1995 version with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. Absolute all-time favorite Jane Austen retelling.
Clueless all the way!! 🙂
An assembly such as this by Pamela Aidan
My absolute, hands-down favourite adaptation is “Clueless”. I caught it the other day and was newly charmed and impressed by how fresh and funny it was.
(Also Paul Rudd is in it, and he hasn’t aged a day! That man has a painting in a frame somewhere, I’m telling you.)
Second place is the 2008 miniseries adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility”. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Ang Lee version too, but the thing about the miniseries is that you really feel the Dashwoods are on the verge of economic destitution, which was something I felt was lost in the sun-drenched good nature of the Ang Lee version. The raw beauty of the (North) Devon setting really helps, too.
I looooved the Keira Knightly version of P&P. I don’t know why but Matthew Macfadyen was my perfect version of Mr. Darcy 🙂 thanks for sharing!
Ella Enchanted was an entertaining retelling of the Cinderella story.
And how about a musical? Spring Awakening (the musical) put a modern day spin on the original play.
If we’re talking just Jane Austen, then definitely 10 Things I Hate About You.
I loved Beastly. I love any Beauty and the Beast retelling.
10 Things I Hate About You! So good! And Bridget Jones Diary. Man, I could go on and on, but those are probably my two favorite sort of unconventional retellings.
I just read Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld & I was pleasantly surprised by its wittiness, satire & wry humor, but still true to its Pride & Prejudice source material. Also bowling (which has nothing to do with Jane Austen, but if you read the book, you know what I am talking about).
I tend to love retellings of classic literature because of the really joyous play that’s involved. Like, the writer/s get to take all of parts they find the most interesting and beloved and then PLAY with them. That’s so awesome.
If I had to pick one, I’d probably pick different ones on different days. Today I’ll go with the pack and pick Clueless.
Emma Thompson/Kevin Branagh retelling of Much Ado About Nothing.
Romeo and Juliet 1969 version
1996 Hamlet directed by Kevin Branagh with a fabulous cast
Sooooooo, I’m listening to The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet at this very moment, you guys. I love The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.
My other favorite retellings are: Bridget Jones’s Diary (book, then movie), Clueless, and, because I just read it and LOVED IT, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter.
Oh! I read Jane Steele last month too, and it was awesome.
I really like Lost in Austen and also Bridget Jones’ Diary. Like everyone else, I also like Clueless too.
I like Bridget Jones’s Diary, Helen Fielding (Pride and Prejudice).
I love the retelling of Little Women! Even though nothing is as good as the book and the film is always different, this was always one of my favorite movies to watch over and over!
I mean it’s hard to go wrong with the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice and Clueless. As evidenced by the comments, they’re cherished by Austen fans. But, just to be contrarian, I’ll agree with those who said She’s the Man. I was introduced to a Mr. Channing Tatum in that movie and he was awfully charming.
Also, Emma Thompson definitely deserved her Oscar for Sense and Sensibility.
Love the Pride and Prejudice version with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen and also 10 Things I Hate About You.
One of my favorites is the William Shakespeare’s Star Wars series by Ian Doescher.
I’m gonna go all weird on ya and say that the Harold Hecuba episode of Gilligan’s Island was pretty awesome. Neither a borrower nor a lender be…
10 Things I Hate About You.
Pimping my own Pride and Prejudice variation, “Alias Thomas Bennet,” is a start! My unpublished “Studio 54” is the best movie adaptation not yet made! Other Austen-inspired novels I love include “The Man Who Loved Pride and Prejudice,” “The Journey,” “A Will of Iron,” from Pride and Prejudice; “Find Wonder in all Things” and “Sway” from Persuasion.
Clueless
I don’t know if it counts, but the Wheedon version of Much Ado About Nothing — Shakespeare’s language, but a modern house and party and everything else.
If you need new words, then Clueless.
The Twelfth Night retelling of She’s The Man is perfection.
Echoing the earlier recommendation of “For Darkness Shows the Stars” – the companion novel, “Across a Star-Swept Sea,” is a re-telling of the Scarlet Pimpernel and even better than the first one!!
I am a huge fan of the ShakespeaRe-Told miniseries, especially The Taming of the Shrew, starring Shirley Henderson as an MP who marries Rufus Sewell, an Earl, in order to advance her career–brilliant! But I’d have to say, out of all of them, my all-time favorite will always be Clueless. I don’t think there could be a more perfect (and oddly timeless, despite the fashions and slang) retelling of Austen’s Emma. And I’m not sure if this counts, but I think Sydney White is an adorable retelling of the Snow White tale.
Clueless is my favorite.
I’ll put in another vote for 10 Things I Hate About You. I have rewatched that so many times.
I also have a ridiculous amount of love for a Czech adaptation of Cinderella called Three Wishes for Cinderella. Watch Cinderella out shoot the prince! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070832/
I devour [almost] any Austen adaptations/retellings I can get my hands on, as well as Jane Eyre.
I, too, have to go with Clueless 🙂 At this point, I don’t even remember much about Emma, but Clueless was definitely an enjoyable remake!
Thank you for the contest. Bridget Jones Diary.
Loved clueless and one of my favorite pride and prejudice adaptations is the lizzy Bennet diaries which really used social media to its fullest in the retelling.
Clueless is one of my favorite adaptations.
My favorites are Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, Sense & Sensibility with Emma Thompson, and Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightly.
I really like the Mr and Mrs Darcy mysteries by Carrie Bebris. Not really a retelling, but an add-on to P&P.
I would have to say the classic restory of BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY BY HELEN FIELDING, and Sense and Sensibility.
Sense and Sensibility.
I’m going to have to go with Clueless. I mean, it’s a great, fun retelling, but mostly because PAUL RUDD.
Love and Friendship looks great. Thanks!
