Giveaway: Love & Friendship Prize Pack

Love and Friendship quote poster - "Whit Stillman and English novelist Jane Austen make for a delightful pairing in this comedy of manners" - Peter Howell at the Toronto StarLove & Friendship is a new movie out in select theaters May 13th, which stars Kate Becksinale, Chloe Sevigny, and Stephen Fry. Based on Jane Austen’s Lady Susan, filmmaker Whit Stillman reimagines the story in which Lady Susan achieves vindication. The film is pretty much Carrie bait, given that she adored Jane Austen’s Lady Susan.

So if you like Austen adaptations, check out both the Love & Friendship film, as well as the novelization which was published earlier this month!

  1. Critterbee says:

The Trojan Women, with Katherine Hepburn! Watched it when I was 13, and it made my head explode.

And Clueless is really good, too.

  2. Lisa says:

Yes, Clueless! West Side Story, Sherlock, Ciran Hinds’ Persuasion, Emma, Cold Comfort Farm, Jane Eyre. Oh so many!

  3. TG says:

I liked Curtis Sittenfeld’s Eligible and Lyndsay Faye’s Jane Steele for recent book adaptations. And, I loved Bride and Prejudice and Clueless!

  4. Jilliann M says:

Okay it’s a kids book but I love the true story of the 3 little pigs. 🙂 3 little pigs is considered a classic so I think this counts!

  5. Heather S says:

Big fan of “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” here! I never thought P&P Gone Modern would work so well for me, but it really did!

  6. Laurel M says:

I really loved She’s The Man as a retelling of Twelfth Night.
I’m not sure it’s classic, but Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day with Frances McDormand and Amy Adams is possibly my favorite movie ever, and based on a 1930s book.

  7. Elena says:

    My favorite is Clueless

  8. Linda N. says:

I love Clueless and Sense and Sensibility the best!

  9. DawnG says:

+1 to many of the ones mentioned above (Colin Firth 4-EVA!!). There’s a Tamil adaptation of Sense and Sensibility called Kandukondain Kandukondain (I have seen it / I have found it) with Tabu and Aishwarya Rai. S&S with musical numbers!

  10. Kate K.F. says:

I love a good retelling as they can add so much to the original work. Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, Stoppard’s Rosencranz and Guildstern are Dead, “Clueless”, the musical Wicked, Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad, retellings of MacBeth and Cinderella.

  11. Charlotte says:

I guess I’ll have to say (if realistic adaptations are off the table), that “10 Things I Hate about You” would be my favorite. I DID buy it, which means it’s one I can watch multiple times and enjoy it.

  12. Lady T says:

I really enjoy the recent webseries retellings of Austen novels such as The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Emma Approved and Welcome to Sandition(yes, that last one is based on an unfinished JA novel!).

  13. Beth says:

It’s not an interpretation of an Austen novel, but I love, love, LOVE Becoming Jane. It’s the first movie where I really noticed James McAvoy, and it was the beginning of a long one-sided love affair. I also love The Age of Innocence, an Edith Wharton interpretation, and Washington Square, a Henry James interpretation.

  14. Shari says:

Great question. BBC Pride & Prejudice, Bridget Jones, Chronicles of Narnia.

  15. Nettle says:

I love Robin McKinley’s Sunshine. It’s not a straight-up retelling, but it’s definitely got Beauty and the Beast themes.

  16. ReneeG says:

“Shades of Milk & Honey” by Mary Robinette Kowal is one of my favorite Austen adaptations. I also love the updates in “Sherlock” from the BBC – longtime Holmes and Watson fan, and the shows are Ab-Fab. For movies, I love “Clueless” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” And we definitely need more Persuasion!

I’m adding lots of titles to my TBR and TBW lists – thanks!

  17. Hera says:

I just finished Eligible. I don’t know if it’s my super favorite ever, but I really liked it.

  18. Rebe says:

Definitely 10 Things I Hate About You!

  19. Carol says:

I’m with Lisa Brown: Jane Eyre with Orson Welles.

But also, just about anything with Emma Thompson.

  20. Peggy says:

I enjoyed the Austen-based books, The Bridget Jones Diary and Austenland. My favorite movie adaptations: the Coline Firth Pride and Prejudice and the Orson Welles Jane Eyre. I also have a soft spot for the Jane Austen Book Club (movie). 🙂

  21. Marci says:

I’ve always loved Ball of Fire with Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. It’s a twist on the Snow White fairytale. Sydney White and She’s The Man were fun retellings too. And Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You are classics (along with She’s All That, a fun retelling of Pygmalion).

For adaptations, Alfonso Cuaron’s A Little Princess is a favorite. Also the Anne of Green Gables mini-series.

  22. Laura says:

1944 film Laura based on the novel by Vera Caspary

  23. Mary Star says:

Loved the Shakespeare ReTold Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing. I also superlove Mickey’s Christmas Carol from Disney — they carve up a lima bean to share for dinner.

  24. Janine says:

10 Things I Hate About You!

  25. Evangeline S. says:

The Lizzie Bennett Diaries are my favorite.

  26. Beth says:

My favorites include the Emma Thompson “Sense and Sensibility,” the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle “Pride and Prejudice,” and the recent adaptation of “North and South.” I also have a soft spot for Toby Stephens, so love him in “Jane Eyre” and “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.”

  27. SusanK says:

I also loved Bride & Prejudice.

  28. Heather S says:

    Sherlock Holmes…hands down 🙂

    Thanks for the fabulous giveaway!

  29. Sarah says:

Clueless is not only one of my favorite modern classic, but also my quintessential teen movie. I want to make a giant to read and watch list out of this comment thread!

  30. Ellie says:

I’ll second the 90s Romeo + Juliet! And, of course, Clueless. I loved Lady Susan, so I have high hopes for this movie.

  31. SandyPo says:

Ten Things I Hate About You. I watch that whenever I happen to catch it.

  32. Mara says:

In the Austen-verse, I think you can’t beat “The Lizzy Bennett Diaries” web series for Pride & Prejudice and “Clueless” for Emma

  33. peggy h says:

Favorite: Clueless! Also currently enjoying reading The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennett.

  34. Glenda says:

No question. Clueless. My favorite non-Austen version of Emma!

  35. Elizabeth says:

The Shakespeare Retold version of MacBeth was deliciously chilling and captured the “fall from grace” tragedy of the original by setting it as a celebrity chef and his protege. For that matter, I saw the Tennant and Tate version of “Much Ado About Nothing,” and that was brilliant fun– resetting the play to the 1980s on Gibraltar. So much fun!

  36. Kim says:

Clueless is my favorite – very cute and modern but still relatively faithful to the original story (Emma)

  37. Susan says:

Tough one. Maybe Bridget Jones’s Diary.

  38. Amanda G. says:

So many good recommendations, but my favorite retellings are Some of Pratchett’s witches books Maskerade and Withces Abroad were my entry to Discworld. I have also been rereading some of Juliet Marillier’s Sevenwaters books, which start with a retell ink of the fairy tale The Six Swans.

  39. Karen says:

Does “West Side Story” count? Wish I could remember some others just now!

  40. Alaina Keener says:

clueless and ten things i hate about you… what can i say? i’m a 90s kid!
