  • Secret Star

    Secret Star by Nora Roberts

Secret Star by Nora Roberts is $1.99 at Amazon! Send some thoughts to the price-matching gods! This is the third book in the Stars of Mithra series. Some readers definitely recommend reading these books in order because they share a common thread and villain. However, many loved the slight magical elements to the story. Have you read this one?

He was standing face-to-face with a dead woman…and she was holding a gun. Lieutenant Seth Buchanan’s homicide investigation–and his heart–were thrown into turmoil when Grace Fontaine turned up very much alive–and in possession of one of the huge blue diamonds known as the Stars of Mithra.

The cool, controlled cop never let his feelings get in the way of his job, and everything he knew about the notorious heiress told him she was poison. But in her irresistible presence, it was hard to remember there was any mystery more important to solve than that of Grace herself.

  • Stolen Songbird

Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen

Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen is $1.99! This is a fantasy young adult novel with (surprise!) a gorgeous cover, and it’s the first book in the Malediction Trilogy. There are curses and troll princes and prophecies. The book has also compared to Graceling and Seraphina, which are two other YA fantasy novels that I’ve really enjoyed. Readers praised a lot of things, from the heroine to the romance to the setting. However, with the book at nearly 500 pages, some readers complained it was a little too long and suffered from some pacing issues. It has a 4-star rating on GoodReads.

For five centuries, a witch’s curse has bound the trolls to their city beneath the ruins of Forsaken Mountain. Time enough for their dark and nefarious magic to fade from human memory and into myth. But a prophesy has been spoken of a union with the power to set the trolls free, and when Cécile de Troyes is kidnapped and taken beneath the mountain, she learns there is far more to the myth of the trolls than she could have imagined.

Cécile has only one thing on her mind after she is brought to Trollus: escape. Only the trolls are clever, fast, and inhumanly strong. She will have to bide her time, wait for the perfect opportunity.

But something unexpected happens while she’s waiting – she begins to fall for the enigmatic troll prince to whom she has been bonded and married. She begins to make friends. And she begins to see that she may be the only hope for the half-bloods – part troll, part human creatures who are slaves to the full-blooded trolls. There is a rebellion brewing. And her prince, Tristan, the future king, is its secret leader.

As Cécile becomes involved in the intricate political games of Trollus, she becomes more than a farmer’s daughter. She becomes a princess, the hope of a people, and a witch with magic powerful enough to change Trollus forever.

  • Laid Out

    Laid Out by Sidney Halston

Laid Out by Sidney Halston is 99c! To be honest, I find the cover model to be incredibly striking! This is a sports romance with an MMA hero and a friends to lovers plot. Many readers loved the heroine, but some felt the romance was a bit slow to get started. Any takers for this bundle of catnip?

Perfect for fans of Katy Evans and Sarah Castille, Sidney Halston’s scorching new MMA romance proves there are no holds barred when it comes to seduction.

As an Army brat, Violet Channing could never meet her dad’s high expectations. But in the eyes of her best friend, she could do no wrong. He even insisted that he should be her first kiss. Now Cain Sorensen is all grown up, hardened by years in special ops and always looking for a good fight. Tall, with striking blue eyes and impossibly blond hair, he’s a modern-day Viking warrior. Of course, Violet’s all grown up, too, and she’s ready to surrender to his every command.

Cain knows he’s bad for Violet. His work is dangerous, and his hobbies are downright deadly. As a private mercenary and a mixed martial arts fighter, he could never let such an innocent soul into his world. And yet his most grueling combat training is no match for Violet’s killer curves, hot touch, and suggestive glances. Now all of Cain’s most explosive fantasies are coming true—but once they cross the line between friends and lovers, there’s no turning back.

  • Baby, Drive South

Baby, Drive South by Stephanie Bond

Baby, Drive South by Stephanie Bond is $1.99! This is a small town contemporary romance. Readers thought the plot was quirky and interesting, though several hated the hero and thought he was a mega-jerk. This is the first in the Souther Roads series and has a 3.6-star rating on Goodreads.

Southern town seeks single women. Lots of them!

The hardheaded Armstrong brothers are determined to rebuild their tornado-ravaged hometown in the Georgia mountains. They’ve got the means, they’ve got the manpower…what they need are women! So they place an ad in a northern newspaper and wait for the ladies to answer their call…

Porter, the youngest Armstrong, is all for importing women. Still, he’s so blown away by the sheer numbers, he falls off the water tower. Luckily there’s a doctor among the newcomers–sweet and sexy Dr. Nikki Salinger.

And Porter has every intention of checking out her bedside manner…

Because You are Mine by Lena Hart is free at Are today and tomorrow. I haven’t read this one, although I did read the author’s novella in For Love & Liberty; Untold love stories of the American Revolution (I think it was reviewed here) and liked it well enough.

  2. I Am Kate says:

Thanks for the heads up. I love Stephanie Bond. I’ve been thrilled that Harlequin is re-releasing her novels from the 90s as “Treasury” stories.

Linda Howard’s “A Game of Chance” is $1.99 at Amazon, $4.99 at B&N nook, $1.99 at Kobo and $4.99 at Google. This is book #5 of the Mackenzie family series. I love the series but this was my least favorite of the books (perhaps because it was the last, I knew it was the last, and my expectations were way too high). In any case, I snapped it up as fast as I could. A wonderful series.

  4. Leah says:

I thought Stolen Songbird sounded interesting… maybe because Amazon informs me I picked it up in 2014, likely as a freebie or something because I never read it! Oh well, thanks for the reminder!

  5. Gracious. The cover model on Laid Out is smoldering so hard I’m afraid my laptop will spontaneously combust.

  6. SandyCo says:

I just finished reading “Laid Out”, and the story itself wasn’t bad, but the author committed the cardinal sin of “head-hopping”, swapping point of view so rapidly that I had whiplash. I doubt I’ll ever read anything by that author again, unfortunately. I’m glad this book only cost .99!

  7. Susan says:

@Leah: Same! I saw that I bought it in December 2014 and then forgot about it. I’m probably missing out on some wonderful books that I’ve forgotten I even own.

  8. Vicki says:

found this alternative version of Laid Out.
