Normal

RECOMMENDED: Normal by Graeme Cameron is $3.99! Elyse mentioned this in a previous post on Women in Psychological Thrillers and said:
Normal by Graeme Cameron is delightfully weird fun. Told from the perspective of a serial killer who is keeping a woman captive in his basement, we see her through his eyes only. This sounds like it would 1000% squicky and DNW, but Cameron makes his unnamed protagonist, if not likable or emphatic, engaging enough that it’s easy to keep reading.
This is a love story. No, really.
He lives in your community, in a nice house with a well-tended garden. He shops in your grocery store, bumping shoulders with you as you pass him and apologizing with a smile. He drives beside you on the highway, politely waving to let you into the lane ahead of him.
What you don’t know is that he has an elaborate cage built into a secret basement under his garage. And the food that he’s carefully shopping for is to feed a young woman he’s holding there against her will–one in a string of many, unaware of the fate that awaits her.
This is how it’s been for a long time. It’s normal…and it works. Perfectly.
Then he meets the checkout girl from the 24-hour grocery. And now the plan, the hunts, the room…the others. He doesn’t need any of them anymore. He needs only her. One small problem–he still has someone trapped in his garage.
Discovering his humanity couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris is $1.99! This is the first book in her new Midnight, Texas series, which is urban fantasy with some mystery thrown in. Some readers felt this series lacks the charm of her Sookie Stackhouse series, but many loved that Harris went back to her roots as a mystery writer, though used paranormal elements.
FIRST IN A NEW TRILOGY
From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale – populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it…
Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.
There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).
Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

Marine for Hire by Tawna Fenske is 99c! This is more of a novella-length contemporary (a little less than 250 pages), but the rest of the series is also on sale. You can grab all four books for less than $10. The heroine is a divorced, single mother, who has sworn off men in the military. The hero is a great friend of the heroine’s brother (we know how that goes), who’s playing nanny temporarily. Readers love the heroine and her relationship with the people around her, while others felt the book was rather forgettable. Have you read this one?
She thought she’d sworn off military men for good…
Sam Kercher is every inch a wickedly hot Marine. Tall. Sexy. Lethal. When his best friends call in a favor, Sam is forced to face an entirely new line of duty—playing nanny for their newly divorced sister and her squirming seven-month-old twin boys. If Sam can dissemble an M16 in his sleep, diaper duty should be a cakewalk…right?
Unfortunately, Operation Nanny isn’t quite that simple. Sheridan has sworn off overbearing military men, so Sam must protect her from her dirtbag ex without revealing just how much he has in common with her brothers. Or that he’s been ordered not to touch her. Ever. Problem is, Sheri’s one hell of a gorgeous woman, capable of making this hard-bodied marine even harder. And Sam wants her bad.
Protect the girl. Care for the babies. Hide his identity. And keep his hands off. But even the most disciplined Marine has weaknesses…and Sheridan is one Sam might not be able to resist.

The Devil of Clan Sinclair by Karen Ranney is $1.99! This book is one that pops up frequently from reader recommendations. A second chance romance, readers loved the obstacles the couple had to overcome in order to get their happy ending, while some felt the conflict could have been resolved with a simple conversation. This book has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads and is the first in the Clan Sinclair series. The next book is also on sale!
To Dance with the Devil…
For Virginia Traylor, Countess of Barrett, marriage was merely the vehicle to buy her father a title. Widowhood, however, brings a host of problems. For her husband deliberately spent the money intended for Virginia and her in-laws, leaving them penniless— unless she produces an heir. Desperate and confused, Virginia embarks on a fateful journey that brings her to the doorstep of the only man she’s ever loved…
He’s known as the Devil, but Macrath Sinclair doesn’t care. He moved to a tiny Scottish village in hopes of continuing his work as an inventor and starting a family of his own. He bought the house; he chose the woman. Unfortunately, Virginia didn’t choose him. Macrath knows he should turn her away now, but she needs him, and he wants her more than ever. Whatever game Virginia’s playing, Macrath intends to win— one wickedly seductive deed at a time…

I am so excited about the Charlaine Harris book and this new series. It’s been on my wish list for a while, but I couldn’t quite justify the $9.99 . I like her Sookie Stackhouse series (which I read long before the HBO series), but her Harper Connolly series is also good. I loved the first Sookie Stackhouse book for the way it dealt with race and class, but I think True Blood took off in a different way.
And I think that the success of tv series keeps people from remembering that Charlaine Harris is a versatile writer. Anyway, happy dance!
Well, Normal sounds absolutely chilling.
The new Charlaine Harris series almost made me throw my Kindle and submit a rant. *shudder* awful
The dress on that historical book is GORGEOUS
That Charlaine Harris book was really awful. I didn’t like it at all. 🙁
@shoregirl == I think NBC is doing a series based on the Midnight, Texas series. Dylan Bruce (aka Hot Paul from Orphan Black) is slated to star.
I’m sorry to hear the new series isn’t that good. I’ve only just started the first bok, so we will see….
