Giveaway: The Strangely Beautiful Omnibus

Strangely Beautiful
A | BN | K | AB
To celebrate the omnibus re-issue of a steampunk fantasy romance that’s been out of print for awhile, we’re giving away 10 copies of Strangely Beautiful.

This book was first published in 2009 by Dorchester, and now it’s back in a 2-in-1 edition, which includes The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, a 2009 DABWAHA nominee, and the sequel, The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker.

If you like steampunk, this is one of the earliest that I can remember in romance, though I’m sure there were others at the time. The author calls it, “Gothic Gaslamp Fantasy Romance,” which I imagine made many of your ears perk up!

To enter, comment below with some of your favorite steampunk stories because we all need more on our TBR piles, right?

  1. StarOpal says:

Iron Seas is my favorite. And I still adore my copy of Corsets & Clockwork. Oh and I’d put Snow by Tracy Lynn in there too.

  2. Monkey Pants says:

I’m not even reading previous comments, so I don’t feel bad for being boring and repeating what most people have probably said. Favourite steampunk: Bec McMaster, London steampunk series & Meljean Brook, Iron Seas.

  3. peggy h says:

My favorite SP series, where I’ve read the entire series, are Cindy Spencer Pape’s Gaslight Chronicles, Kady Cross’ Steampunk Chronicles, and Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate. One stand-alone book that I read a couple of years ago and really enjoyed: Genevieve Valentine’s Mechanique–steampunk circus!

  4. Kate says:

I absolutely love Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series and The Finishing School Quartet, Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, Monster Blood Tattoo series by D.M. Cornish, and I have read (and loved) the first novel in Persephone Parker duology but never managed to get my hands on the sequel. Bring on more steampunk goodness!

  5. Michele says:

Both Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk and Meljean Brook’s Iron Seas novels are auto-buys for me, and I buy very, very few books at full price!

  6. Janine says:

    Gail Carriger!

  7. Maggie says:

Meljean Brook is autobuy for me, and I loved Gail Carriger’s adult series but haven’t read the YA one yet. I also enjoyed the Moira Rogers Bloodhound series.

A book I’ve been meaning to re-read is Kate Locke’s God Save the Queen -I think it’s really more paranormal than steampunk, but something about it keeps asking me to re-read it. But then again, I never made it to the sequels so maybe it wasn’t really all that.

  8. Suzanne Whitehouse says:

I have only dipped my toe in steampunk, but I really enjoyed the YA Lunar Chronicles, beginning with Cinder. I look forward to checking out some of the steampunk novels mentioned!

  9. Lnda Cohen says:

Steampunk! An Anthology of Fantastically Rich and Strange Stories—Kelly Link:Editor.

Though I will say it was a little hit and miss the packaging for the hardcover was oh so pretty.

  10. Texas Book Lover says:

The only one I’ve read is The Kraken King so far, but I’m getting lots of great ideas on this post.

  11. Mary Preston says:

I have read very little steampunk thus far. Furiously adding to my reading list.

  12. Susan says:

I don’t have a separate category for steampunk so, of course, I’m struggling to remember offhand what books I’ve read that would fit. Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate, of course. MK Hobson’s Native Star (and sequels). I hate when I have book amnesia–this is why I’m so bad at HABOs!

  13. Grumpy Cougar says:

The Flash Gold novels by Lindsay Buroker are on my TBR list…

Is anyone else here attending the Steampunk World’s Fair next month? (I am! YAY!) There will be a blind book swap, among other things.

  14. Beth says:

I feel like I’m just echoing others here, but I have to second all of the recommendations for Cherie Priest, Bec McMaster, Gail Carriger, Elizabeth Bear, Zoe Archer, and Neil Stephenson. Also a strong second for whoever mentioned the (set in an alternate WWI era) YA Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld.

  15. Alma says:

I love steampunk. Some of my favorites are: Zoë Archer’s Blade of Roses and Ether Chronicles series, Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences by Tee Morris and Pip Ballantine, Pax Britannia series by Jonathan Green, Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger, Veneficas Americana series by M. K. Hobson, Bannon & Clare Affairs by Lilith Saintcrow

  16. Brittany says:

HEY!! I WANT GET INTO THIS! I CAN’T LIE AND MAKE UP A STORY LMAO! LET ME WIN AND READ THIS THING! 🙂

  17. Aliyah says:

All the happy books to add to my pile! I fell in love with Kate Locke’s series — it is how I fell into steampunk. I also enjoyed Lilith Saintcrow’s Bannon & Clare series (though I wish there were more than 3 books) and Jax Garren’s Tales of the Underlight (my go to stress read with the best hero ever). I agree with most of the comments on Meljean Brooks, Bec McMaster, and Delilah S. Dawson (all fantastic!) but there are loads I have not yet read… anyone want to prioritise for me? A top ten list here would be really helpful;)

  18. Heather says:

I adored Kate Locke’s Immortal Empire series — maybe not technically steampunk, but her world definitely has the right “feel” to it.

  19. ReneeG says:

Coming in late, and my usual suspects are lined up against the wall (Carriger, McMaster, Brooks, Holloway, Cross, Archer). Appreciate the many new authors to try!

  20. Ashley Morris says:

I’ve not read much steampunk yet. I have read some Kristin Callihan, which is steampunk and paranormal together in one lovely package.

  21. Anne Porfirio says:

The series by Bec McMasters starting with “Kiss of Steel” has to be the best.

  22. Y says:

Gail Carriger, Bec McMaster, Meljean Brook are all wonderful!

  23. AmyMac says:

Ditto to Bec McMaster, Meljean Brook (LOVE her Kraken King), and Zoe Archer (Skies of Fire gives me all the feels).

A series that’s also really good and hasn’t seen much play in the comments is Lindsey Buroker’s Emperor’s Edge series (has a slow burn romance but also really good about a group of outlaws out to save the empire, comprised of a former cop, former assassin, former professor, former street gang member, and current dandy==> excellent world-building with tech and magic, great characters in a found family theme, and some really funny lines/perspective) The main character manages to hatch crazy plans and blow at least one thing up in each book 😉

  24. Shiny says:

The first book Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk is great. I also really liked Zoe Archer’s Ether Chronicles.

  25. Brittany Dery says:

I cant lie and pretend I know exactly what this is but I have read the summarys and the comments from other people and I am absolutly rivited in this! I am into romance novels but this seems to be much more. I wish I could read a book of hers this second. I am so into this right now I cant stop exploring this site. I just became her newest fan and just wait until I win this contest and read a full book. Itll be all I read from now on. Dont belive me? Ill write you a book report after.

  26. Brittany Dery says:

    pick me pretty please….

  27. Cathy Jones says:

I’ve enjoyed what little steampunk romance I’ve read, the Parasol Protectorate and Bec McMasters’ London Vampire series. I’d love to read more.

  28. My favorite steampunk novel is probably Meljean Brook’s THE KRAKEN KING! I read it in its original serial form and loved it sooooo much.

  29. kitkat9000 says:

Not bothering to read the comments as I don’t have the time right now to write down all of the new-to-me authors/stories being mentioned here.

So, I’ll go with 3 of my favorites: MelJean Brook, Gail Carriger and Grace Draven. Ms Draven is a newer addition to the genre and the first story, “Gaslight Hades”, is in a compilation she did with Elizabeth Hunter titled “Beneath a Waning Moon”. Absolutely recommended.

  30. Ruthg says:

I’m a big fan of both Moira Rogers Bloodhound series and Meljean Brooks’s Iron Seas series.

  31. Mari says:

Bec McMaster. I enjoy the world building and mix of supernatural with steampunk. It makes sense that a world with vampires would also be a world with alternative sciences.

Also, love these giveaways – I find such great book recommendations by reading the comments!

  32. SonomaLass says:

I’m not going to echo all of the above (Brook, Lin, Priest, Archer), but I have to add Dru Pagliassotti’s Clockwork Heart trilogy. Often overlooked, but one of my favorite steampunk romances.

  33. Seb says:

I really enjoyed “Phoenix Rising,” the first novel in The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series by Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris. I wasn’t too keen on the second one, but maybe I need to read them again since apparently they’re going on book five now, and I really liked Books and Braun!

  34. Alaina Keener says:

I have not read a ton of steampunk. I think I’ve read some but I can’t think of anything specific…

  35. Shawnie says:

I love steampunk romance! Meljean Brooks’s The Iron Duke, Bec McMasters The Kiss of Steal, and The Native Star by M.K. Hobson are some of my favorites so far.
