YA Fantasy, Vampires, & Lois Lane

  • A History of Glitter and Blood

A History of Glitter and Blood by Hannah Moskowitz

RECOMMENDED: A History of Glitter and Blood by Hannah Moskowitz is $2.99! Real talk, this book is weird and though it’s YA, it can get pretty dark in terms of what happens in this fantasy fictional world. It has a bit of a speculative fiction vibe, but it’s definitely a book that will stick with you, even though I know it’s not for everyone. I will also warn that it takes a while to get going.

Sixteen-year-old Beckan and her friends are the only fairies brave enough to stay in Ferrum when war breaks out. Now there is tension between the immortal fairies, the subterranean gnomes, and the mysterious tightropers who arrived to liberate the fairies.

But when Beckan’s clan is forced to venture into the gnome underworld to survive, they find themselves tentatively forming unlikely friendships and making sacrifices they couldn’t have imagined. As danger mounts, Beckan finds herself caught between her loyalty to her friends, her desire for peace, and a love she never expected.

This stunning, lyrical fantasy is a powerful exploration of what makes a family, what justifies a war, and what it means to truly love.

  • Hunt the Darkness

Hunt the Darkness by Alexandra Ivy

Hunt the Darkness by Alexandra Ivy is $1.99 at most vendors! This is number eleven in the Guardians of Eternity paranormal romance series, and it has a vampire hero and a witch heroine. It also has a bit of the enemies to lovers and fated mates tropes in the plot as well. Readers loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine, while others felt the plot lacked any action. It has a 4.3-star rating on Goodreads.

The vampire Roke is raw, sensual, always in control. Yet somehow he’s allowed the unthinkable to happen: a nymph-like witch named Sally has used her magic to trick Roke into mating with her. The pair will remain bound for eternity unless Sally breaks the spell. The trouble is, she has no idea how. . .

Mating with Roke was an accident;at least that’s what Sally keeps telling herself. She’s on the hunt for her demon father, whose identity holds the key to releasing the spell. The search won’t be easy with Roke shadowing Sally’s every move. As they mate with a ferocity that leaves them both aching for more, Sally isn’t sure if her world is more dangerous without Roke–or with him. . .

  • The Walls Around Us

The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma

The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma is less than $2 at most vendors. This is described as a Young Adult Black Swan with elements of the paranormal. Some wished the paranormal angle was a bit stronger in the story, while others loved how the answer to the mystery of the book didn’t make sense until the very end. Have you read this one?

“Ori’s dead because of what happened out behind the theater, in the tunnel made out of trees. She’s dead because she got sent to that place upstate, locked up with those monsters. And she got sent there because of me.”

On the outside, there’s Violet, an eighteen-year-old dancer days away from the life of her dreams when something threatens to expose the shocking truth of her achievement.

On the inside, within the walls of the Aurora Hills juvenile detention center, there’s Amber, locked up for so long she can’t imagine freedom.

Tying their two worlds together is Orianna, who holds the key to unlocking all the girls’ darkest mysteries . . .

What really happened on the night Orianna stepped between Violet and her tormentors? What really happened on two strange nights at Aurora Hills? Will Amber and Violet and Orianna ever get the justice they deserve—in this life or in another one?

In prose that sings from line to line, Nova Ren Suma tells a supernatural tale of guilt and of innocence, and of what happens when one is mistaken for the other.

  • Fallout

    Fallout by Gwenda Bond

Fallout by Gwenda Bond is $1.99! This is a YA novelization about a young Lois Lane trying to solve a mystery after her family moves to a new city. Some people were disappointed at the lack of Superman in this book, but…c’mon, it’s the first book in the Lois Lane series. So if you’re hoping to have another story about Clark Kent, this may not be for you. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Lois Lane is starting a new life in Metropolis. An Army brat, Lois has lived all over–and seen all kinds of things. (Some of them defy explanation, like the near-disaster she witnessed in Kansas in the middle of one night.) But now her family is putting down roots in the big city, and Lois is determined to fit in. Stay quiet. Fly straight.

As soon as she steps into her new high school, though, she can see it won’t be that easy. A group known as the Warheads is making life miserable for another girl at school. They’re messing with her mind, somehow, via the high-tech immersive videogame they all play. Not cool. Armed with her wit and her new snazzy job as a reporter, Lois has her sights set on solving this mystery. But sometimes it’s all a bit much. Thank goodness for her maybe-more-than-a friend, a guy she knows only by his screenname, SmallvilleGuy . . .

  1. Susan says:

I read The Walls Around Us. It was good, but it didn’t make much sense until the ending, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about the ending. It kept me eagerly turning pages, though, and the ballet scenes were interesting.

  2. Lara says:

I’ll throw in a cheer for Fallout! Lois (1st-person narrator)is funny and smart and never crosses the line into “Now is when I do something stupid and dangerous because that’s what Girl Reporters Do!” And while there’s no Superman, Lois does have an online pal who lives in Smallville…

  3. Jennifer says:

I second Lara’s rec for Fallout. I am not usually into Superman, but Lois Lane has always been a character that I’m intrigued by. I remember being particularly struck by the theme of friendship in this book. I can’t wait for the sequel which comes out in May, I think.

  4. Kira says:

I really loved The Walls Around Us. Right after I read it I was more conflicted but over time I’ve thought more and more of how many daring things it did and did well. It explored incarceration, the nature of female friendship, race and institutionalized racism, all through this veil of magical realism.

  5. Crystal says:

Ah, finally. My library never got Fallout, and I’ve been eyeing it, waiting for a sale, for several months.
