YA Fantasy & Paranormal Romance!

  • Cold Burn of Magic

Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep

Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep is $3.99 at Amazon and iBooks! This is a young adult urban fantasy with a heroine who hunts monsters and lives in a library basement (which I would do in a heartbeat). Some readers mentioned that there’s a lot going on in setting up the world, since it’s the first book in a series. Meanwhile, others loved the cast of characters, mainly a cowboy pixie by the name of Oscar. Have you read this one?

There Be Monsters Here. . .

It’s not as great as you’d think, living in a tourist town that’s known as “the most magical place in America.” Same boring high school, just twice as many monsters under the bridges and rival Families killing each other for power.

I try to keep out of it. I’ve got my mom’s bloodiron sword and my slightly illegal home in the basement of the municipal library. And a couple of Talents I try to keep quiet, including very light fingers and a way with a lock pick.

But then some nasty characters bring their Family feud into my friend’s pawn shop, and I have to make a call–get involved, or watch a cute guy die because I didn’t. I guess I made the wrong choice, because now I’m stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair. My mom was murdered because of the Families, and it looks like I’m going to end up just like her. .

  • Born in Blood

Born in Blood by Alexandra Ivy

Born in Blood by Alexandra Ivy is $1.99! This is the first book in her Sentinels series and features a cop hero. In the series, supernatural beings also exist in the world, though many try to live on a protected compound in the Midwest called Valhalla. Some readers felt sex between the hero and heroine happened way too quickly, while others enjoyed a paranormal romance without the usual werewolves and vampires. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

In a stunning new paranormal romance series—even edgier than her bestselling Guardians of Eternity books—New York Times bestselling author Alexandra Ivy lures readers into the dark, seductive world of the Sentinels—humans outcast by their hidden abilities, treading the line between life and death, good and evil, pleasure and pain…

    Born In Blood

Sergeant Duncan O’Conner has seen it all before. A beautiful erotic dancer is found murdered in her home—no suspect, no motive. But there’s one clue: she’s missing her heart. It’s enough to make the hard-bitten Kansas City cop enlist the help of a necro—one of the dead-channeling freaks who live in the domed city of nearby Valhalla. It’s a long shot, but desperate crimes call for desperate measures.

Unlike the other “high-bloods” in Valhalla, Callie Brown considers her abilities a gift, not a curse. But when she reads the dancer’s final thoughts, she senses a powerful presence blocking her vision. This is no ordinary homicide. This is the work of a legendary necromancer who controls souls. A ravenous force that will put Callie’s skills to the test, O’Conner’s career at risk, and both their hearts on the line…literally

  • The Iron King

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa is $1.99 at most vendors and $2.99 at All Romance! I wrote a review of this way back in 2011 on Goodreads and my main gripes with the book were the references to certain things in pop culture. But I really appreciated the worldbuilding and background characters:

What I enjoyed about the book was certainly the characterization of many of the fae. High school required reading assignments and drama club started my love of Shakespeare and it was refreshing to see some old favorite literary characters brought back to life. New fae races like the packrats were a shining example of introducing secondary characters that leave a lasting impression. I definitely found myself looking forward to future appearances.

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

  • Savage Hunger

    Savage Hunger by Terry Spear

Savage Hunger by Terry Speak is 99c! This is a paranormal romance with a jaguar shifter hero. Readers definitely describe this as adventurous, if you happen to like that in your romances, while others felt things were a little drawn out. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

As a jaguar he is graceful and gorgeous. Speedy and stealthy. Fierce, independent and wild. As a man he is passionate and powerful, wilful and wonderful.

And he’ll stop at nothing to protect what’s his…

In the heat of the jungle, jaguars are clawed, dangerous, and hungry for love. With hopes of overcoming night terrors and thanking the man who saved her life, Kathleen McKnight returns to the Amazon.

A jaguar at heart, Connor Anderson doesn’t just protect her, but wants to claim her for his own.

  1. JenM says:

I just read Cold Burn of Magic last month and really enjoyed it. I rarely read YA books because I prefer my main characters to have more life experience, but Jennifer Estep is one of my exceptions to that rule. She doesn’t include annoying cliffhangers and also doesn’t include manufactured insta-love or love triangles and her heroines are always strong and self-reliant.

  2. Kswan says:

I finished Cold Burn feeling cheated and indifferent to the characters further adventures. The heroine leaves the library basement early in the story (the basement was the main element that lured me to the story), and the H turns into yet another special snowflake with all the gifts. Yawn!

  3. Leah says:

The Iron Fey as a series lost me around the second or third book, when the heroine HAD to fall for a really stupid and obvious deception in order for the romance to move forward with drama and angst. The actual workings of what’s happening are so painfully obvious to the reader, but the heroine gets pages and pages and PAGES of laying around in her own misery, being shocked and betrayed, getting manipulated by characters taking advantage of it… it’s really tiresome, and watching characters fall for cheap lies just for the sake of having angst in a relationship when they SHOULD be able to see through them is one of my pet peeves.
