Pretty Baby

RECOMMENDED: Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica is $1.99 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is a mystery/thriller that Elyse really enjoyed, giving it an A grade, though she does give a trigger warning for child abuse in the book:
I love a thriller that makes me think, makes me question the narrator and isn’t just about who buried the body in the woods. Pretty Baby is all those things, and combined with exquisite writing and an ending that comes together beautifully it was an A read for me.
A chance encounter sparks an unrelenting web of lies in this stunning new psychological thriller from national bestselling author Mary Kubica
She sees the teenage girl on the train platform, standing in the pouring rain, clutching an infant in her arms. She boards a train and is whisked away. But she can’t get the girl out of her head…
Heidi Wood has always been a charitable woman: she works for a nonprofit, takes in stray cats. Still, her husband and daughter are horrified when Heidi returns home one day with a young woman named Willow and her four-month-old baby in tow. Disheveled and apparently homeless, this girl could be a criminal—or worse. But despite her family’s objections, Heidi invites Willow and the baby to take refuge in their home.
Heidi spends the next few days helping Willow get back on her feet, but as clues into Willow’s past begin to surface, Heidi is forced to decide how far she’s willing to go to help a stranger. What starts as an act of kindness quickly spirals into a story far more twisted than anyone could have anticipated.

SEAL of Honor by Tonya Burrows is 99c! This is the first book in her romantic suspense HORNET series, which I’m guessing has nothing to do with the insect. I’m assuming that the other titles in the series will follow the rest of the hero’s team members, at least that’s what I’m hoping! Readers thought Burrows captured a great balance between romance and suspense, though some felt the plot got a little bit muddled halfway through the book. It has a 3.8-star rating on GoodReads.
It’s a good thing Gabe Bristow lives and breathes the Navy SEAL credo, “the only easy day was yesterday,” because today, his life is unrecognizable. When his prestigious career comes to a crashing halt, he’s left with a bum leg and few prospects for employment that don’t include a desk.
That is, until he’s offered the chance to command a private hostage rescue team and free a wealthy American businessman from Colombian paramilitary rebels. It seems like a good deal—until he meets his new team: a drunk Cajun linguist, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, a cowboy medic, and an EOD expert as volatile as the bombs he defuses. Oh, and who could forget the sexy, frustratingly impulsive Audrey Van Amee? She’s determined to help rescue her brother—or drive Gabe crazy. Whichever comes first.
As the death toll rises, Gabe’s team of delinquents must figure out how to work together long enough to save the day. Or, at least, not get themselves killed. Because Gabe’s finally found something worth living for, and God help him if he can’t bring her brother back alive.

Fighting for Devlin by Jessica Lemmon is 99c! This is a contemporary romance, possibly new adult, between a restaurant owner and one of his employees. Which I know may be an off for some readers. Though readers who love a good angsty romance recommend this one on Goodreads. Any takers?
Perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Katy Evans, Jessica Lemmon’s irresistible Lost Boys series kicks off with the story of a good girl who plays by the rules—and the bad boy who brings out her wild side.
Devlin Calvary makes his own luck. Orphaned as a young child, he was taken in by a crew of bookies and gamblers—and they became his family. They’re the reason Dev’s running a trendy bistro, living in a high rise, and enjoying the good life with a string of women who never ask for too much. Until, one night, he finds out how much it hurts to trust the wrong people.
Rena Lewis sticks to the straight and narrow, determined not to slip up again . . . like the terrible night of partying four years ago that ended in tragedy. A waitress at Oak & Sage, she knows that sleeping with her boss is not a smart move. But when Dev shows up on her doorstep, beat up and clearly shaken, Rena’s not about to turn him down . . . or kick him out of bed.
Dev reawakens something primal within her—a need to go wild. And Rena soon finds out that the heart she’d sealed away years ago still has the power to fight for love.

A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist is $1.99! Gist is a bit of an auto-buy author for some. This is an American historical and Inspirational romance, though there does seem to be some debate on shelving it as “Inspirational” on Goodreads. Readers say that though what little and tame sexual content is in the book, there is plenty of sexual tension. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.
In 1860s Seattle, a man with a wife could secure himself 640 acres of timberland. But because of his wife’s untimely death, Joe Denton finds himself about to lose half of his claim. Still in mourning, his best solution is to buy one of those Mercer girls arriving from the East. A woman he’ll marry in name but keep around mostly as a cook.
Anna Ivey’s journey west with Asa Mercer’s girls is an escape from the griefs of her past. She’s not supposed to be a bride, though, just a cook for the girls. But when they land, she’s handed to Joe Denton and the two find themselves in a knotty situation. She refuses to wed him and he’s about to lose his land. With only a few months left, can Joe convince this provoking–but beguiling–easterner to be his bride?

Oh! /waves hand in the air/ as a mega fan of The Royal We (it’s my fave DABWAHA nominee this year), I really dig the new Royal Romance series on Kindle by Molly Jameson and starting today, book 1, Tangled Up In Princes is a freebie!
it’s about Carrie, a Kentucky yarn shop owner who’s trying to make sure her diva sister’s society wedding in a Scottish castle goes off without a hitch (har) but Carrie gets mixed up with Jamie and Edward, the Prince of Wales and his younger more responsible brother. Mayhem, hijinks and sexytimes ensue and I loved it. There’s a second book out and the promise of more. I thought the Bitchery would appreciate this one.
