The Wrath and the Dawn

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh is $2.99! If you haven’t noticed, we’re doing a big giveaway for the series and have an excerpt from the new novella. This is a YA fantasy novel with romance elements and is a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights. Readers love the world Ahdieh built, but do mention there seems to be a love triangle in the first book that doesn’t quite work well. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.
A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights
Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.
She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

In the Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish is 99c! This is a m/m romance that is a 2016 DABWAHA nominee. The book made it to round two, but was beaten by Elle Kennedy’s The Deal. Reader Judy W. called the book “outstanding” in our latest Whatcha Reading, though some found the dialogue to be repetitive with too much filler. Have you read this one?
Daniel Mulligan is tough, snarky, and tattooed, hiding his self-consciousness behind sarcasm. Daniel has never fit in—not at home in Philadelphia with his auto mechanic father and brothers, and not at school where his Ivy League classmates looked down on him. Now, Daniel’s relieved to have a job at a small college in Holiday, Northern Michigan, but he’s a city boy through and through, and it’s clear that this small town is one more place he won’t fit in.
Rex Vale clings to routine to keep loneliness at bay: honing his muscular body, perfecting his recipes, and making custom furniture. Rex has lived in Holiday for years, but his shyness and imposing size have kept him from connecting with people.
When the two men meet, their chemistry is explosive, but Rex fears Daniel will be another in a long line of people to leave him, and Daniel has learned that letting anyone in can be a fatal weakness. Just as they begin to break down the walls keeping them apart, Daniel is called home to Philadelphia, where he discovers a secret that changes the way he understands everything.

Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko is $1.99! I had originally seen the movie adaptation first and then I realized it was a book! I liked the book better, naturally, and thought it did a better job explaining the Light/Dark concept of the world. However, since this was originally written in Russian, some readers expressed having a few translation issues.
They are the “Others,” an ancient race of supernatural beings—magicians, shape-shifters, vampires, and healers—who live among us. Human born, they must choose a side to swear allegiance to—the Dark or the Light—when they come of age.
For a millennium, these opponents have coexisted in an uneasy peace, enforced by defenders like the Night Watch, forces of the Light who guard against the Dark. But prophecy decrees that one supreme “Other” will arise to spark a cataclysmic war.
Anton Gorodetsky, an untested mid-level Light magician with the Night Watch, discovers a cursed young woman—an Other of tremendous potential unallied with either side—who can shift the balance of power. With the battle lines between Light and Dark drawn, the magician must move carefully, for one wrong step could mean the beginning of annihilation.

Some Boys by Patty Blount is $2.99 at Amazon.
Over at Barnes and Nobles, Holly Black’s book Darkest Part of the Forest is at a reduced price of $3.99 . B&N is having a sale on young adult fiction (which I know because I just bought Wrath and Dawn).
They also seem to have some good choices in their less than $2.99 category for general fiction. My credt card thanks you!
“Credit card”. Either way I’m done for.
M/M romance? *click*
Heartbreaker by Linda Howard is $0.99 at Amazon right now.
The Wrath and the Dawn is so good, y’all. SO GOOD.
I read In the Middle of Somewhere because that cover was too delicious to ignore. 😉
IMHO, the book could’ve used some tighter editing but the story’s interesting enough to keep me glued to my tablet til all hours of the night. IIRC, I gave it 3 stars on GR.
(BTW, the second book is way better because it flips things for the one character you will absolutely despise in Book 1. It’s also got better editing).
I’m not a huge fan of Paranormal but I love the Nightwatch, and the rest of the series – they are some of my favourite books and, yes, miles better than the films. The style does take a bit of getting used to (probably because of the translation)but worth it if you like something a bit different.
It’s frustrating being a UK reader sometimes. I fancy the Wrath and the Dawn, went to check it out on UK Kobo. It is on sale, I have to admit. It’s down from £14 to £10. There’s some “we want to sell the hardback” pricing going on right there! :/
I just finished Wrath and the Dawn and thought it was excellent. I am somewhat cautious about young adult books, but will read them if they are by an author I know or in the fantasy genre. I didn’t think there was a love triangle, really. I think it was more a case of larger political forces at work. I very much look forward to reading the sequel. In fact, my real complaint is that the book does not stand alone.
