This HaBO is from Mariam, who wants to find a Regency romance:
I’m looking for a Regency historical.
Heroine is an architect/builder who took over her husband’s business after his death. Turns out she supplied all of his designs when he was living as well. Hero’s house was destroyed by a fire (?) and he hires her. Hijinks ensue.
Though the description is short, I feel like the setting combined with the heroine’s profession is sure to strike a memory in some reader.

Oh man, I’ve read this before, but I can’t remember the title.
It’s The Importance of Being Wicked by Victoria Alexander. 🙂
Thank you!!!!
I may have to go find that just on the basis of crazypants. A Regency woman takes over her husband’s architecture business?? And gets hired?? Historically improbable, so … I’d like to see the workaround. 🙂
I can never come up with the right HaBO even when I’ve read the book. Book amnesia.
I liked The Importance of Being Wicked ok, but remember being really bothered by the anachronistic language. I remember the period as Victorian but, regardless, some of the words/phrases were very 20th century. The most egregious example was the heroine referring to the hero as a twit. Repeatedly. It drove me up a wall.
This is where having only a basic historical background really helps. I can’t get irritated by anything other than the most egregious historical inaccuracies! So, purchased 🙂
