This HaBO is from Tati, who hopes to find a romance she lent out and was then subsequently confiscated by her teacher. Trigger warning by the way for animals possibly in danger:
This has plagued me for YEARS. I read it under my desk at school. Then I loaned it to a friend and she got it confiscated by a teacher. It was all kinds of wild.
Here’s what I remember:
A red-headed girl’s father dies in a car accident (?) where a tree falls on the car and kills her dad and their dog or something – not really clear about this part. She wakes up on a farm, where a dad and two sons nurse her back to health.
One of the sons has a split hand; the fingers are fused together or something, and I think his name was Sam. Sam is super shy but his brother is a tool. The dad is weird. All three of them want in the heroine’s pants.
Other random stuff I remember:
The title possibly has “harvest,” “river,” or “autumn” in it. The cover was of a landscape with a red-headed girl sitting down on the riverbank in the distance. At the end of the novel she gets pregnant from Sam and has twins; he’s all angsty about the pregnancy because he’s afraid the kids will also have ectrodactyly, but both turn out fine. At one point they make sweet, sweet love in a haystack.
It was probably published before 2007, and sadly I don’t know the publisher or anything like that.
These details are so oddly specific that someone has to know this.

I have no idea what this book is, but can I just say how supremely creepy it is that both brothers AND the father want to get into the heroine’s pants? Too wild for me, I must admit!
I misread the title as “Hero has ELECTROdactyly” and so many thoughts ran through my head!Is his name Mr.Tingles? How could anyone forget this book!? This could go really good or really, really bad quickly! Then I read the description and realized my mistake. I don’t recognize this HABO, but I would read both. Somebody hurry up and write this!
This book sounds like a most excellent teenage fever dream and should be written if it wasn’t already. I’m intrigued to have this one solved.
@Eelsmum, I too thought it was electrodactyly! It made me think of a Jeaniene Frost (?) book where the Hermione can’t touch most people because she has electric currents running through her from a (lightning?) accident years before.
Mary Star, Once Burned, Twice Tempted, & Bound by Flames. Love those books! I think the 4th is set to be released this fall.
“At one point they make sweet, sweet love in a haystack.”
How is that even possible? I think of all the places where one would not want hay. Same places one wouldn’t want sand, I daresay.
The father and both the sons want the same woman? yuck.
Thanks, @Crystal! I’m really looking forward to the next installment. There was another character in the Night Huntress world I always wanted to read about. I think it was Spade? One of Bones’ friends who was incredibly confident/arrogant/sassy. I loves me some quality sass 😀
I guess from all the references to Jeaniene Frost’s book, that means no one knows what the HABO book is. I am very curious about it too.
I tried to google for “Hero Has Ectrodactyly” but that just got me back to SMTB and I googled “heroes with disabilities” and astonishingly that redirected me to SBTB. So I get the feeling we may be the only ones who recognize that a man may be disabled in some way and still be a hero.
Yay for us.
Many moons ago, both DA and SBTB had posts on books with characters who had disabilities. The DA post even mentioned ectrodactyly, but it’s not the right book. I’ll include the links below, tho, just in case someone wants to check out some of the titles mentioned.
