Dukes, Dukes, & More Dukes!

  • Dukes Prefer Blondes

Dukes Prefer Blondes by Loretta Chase

RECOMMENDED: Dukes Prefer Blondes by Loretta Chase is $3.99! This is a relatively recent release that Carrie read and gave it a B. Overall, she enjoyed it, but thought it suffered from too much plot:

Dukes Prefer Blondes is a book with irresistible characters, a great plot, and tons of witty banter. Y’all know how dearly I love a battle of wits, and this couple just never slows down on the battlefront. It would be A+ material if not for the extremely odd construction. It feels like this book is one draft short of finished, and also like it’s two books crammed into one.

Biweekly marriage proposals from men who can’t see beyond her (admittedly breathtaking) looks are starting to get on Lady Clara Fairfax’s nerves. Desperate to be something more than ornamental, she escapes to her favorite charity. When a child is in trouble, she turns to tall, dark, and annoying barrister Oliver Radford.

Though he’s unexpectedly found himself in line to inherit a dukedom, Radford’s never been part of fashionable society, and the blonde beauty, though not entirely bereft of brains, isn’t part of his plans. But Clara overwhelms even his infallible logic, and when wedlock looms, all he can do is try not to lose his head over her . . .

It’s an inconvenient marriage by ordinary standards, but these two are far from ordinary. Can the ton’s most adored heiress and London’s most difficult bachelor fall victim to their own unruly desires?

  • The Duke of Dark Desires

The Duke of Dark Desires by Miranda Neville

RECOMMENDED: The Duke of Dark Desires by Miranda Neville is $3.99! This is the fourth and latest book in the Wild Quartet series. The earlier books also appear to be on sale. Elyse reviewed this and gave it an impressive A grade:

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. As far as historical romances go, it’s got a lot of everything good. The hero and heroine break stereotypes and are fully fleshed characters. There’s intrigue and eroticism aplenty. Just make sure you pace yourself and savor this one.

Wanted: Governess able to keep all hours . . .

Rebellious Julian Fortescue never expected to inherit a dukedom, nor to find himself guardian to three young half-sisters. Now in the market for a governess, he lays eyes on Jane Grey and knows immediately she is qualified—to become his mistress. Yet the alluring woman appears impervious to him. Somehow Julian must find a way to make her succumb to temptation . . . without losing his heart and revealing the haunting mistakes of his past.

Desired: Duke skilled in the seductive art of conversation . . .

Lady Jeanne de Falleron didn’t seek a position as a governess simply to fall into bed with the Duke of Denford. Under the alias of Jane Grey, she must learn which of the duke’s relatives is responsible for the death of her family—and take her revenge. She certainly can’t afford the distraction of her darkly irresistible employer, or the smoldering desire he ignites within her .

But as Jane discovers more clues about the villain she seeks, she’s faced with a possibility more disturbing than her growing feelings for Julian: What will she do if the man she loves is also the man she’s sworn to kill?

  • When the Duke was Wicked

When the Duke was Wicked by Lorraine Heath

When the Duke was Wicked by Lorraine Heath is $1.99 right now. This is the first book in the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series, and has a 3.9-star average on GR. Heath has been referred to by both Sarah MacLean and Jessie Edwards, L’AwesomePublicist at Avon, as one of the most underrated stars of historical romance.

When this book was previously on sale, Pooks said she loves this whole series, as the heroes were all raised by Fagin from Oliver Twist.

They are England’s most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways…

Lady Grace Mabry’s ample inheritance has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her—or enamored of her riches. Who better to distinguish beau from blackguard than her notorious childhood friend, the Duke of Lovingdon?

With no interest in marriage, Lovingdon has long lived only for pleasure. He sees little harm in helping Grace find a proper match. After all, he’s familiar with all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman’s favor. He simply has to teach the lovely innocent how to distinguish honest emotions from false ones. How better than by demonstrating his wicked ways. But as lessons lead to torrid passion and Grace becomes ensnared in another man’s marriage plot, Lovingdon must wage a desperate gamble: Open his heart fully—or risk losing the woman he adores…

  • Must Love Dukes

Must Love Dukes by Elizabeth Michels

Must Love Dukes by Elizabeth Michels is FREE! Yeah, that’s right. FREEEEEE! This historical romance is the first in the Tricks of the Ton series and many readers loved the heroine. However, there is a warning that the historical research is a little lax and I know that’s a hot button issue here at the Pink Palace. The book’s nonexistent price should last through tomorrow, if you’re on the fence.

The Mad Duke lean in closer, his lips gently brushing her ear, and whispered, “I dare you.”

    She Can’t Resist the Dare

Lillian Phillips could not imagine how her quiet, simple life had come to this. Blackmailed by the Mad Duke of Thornwood into accepting one wild dare after another…all because of a pocket watch. Desperate to recover her beloved father’s pawned timepiece, Lily did something reckless and dangerous and delicious—something that led to a night she’d never forget.

He has a Reputation for Scandal

When Devon Grey, Duke of Thornwood, runs into a mesmerizing, intoxicating, thieving woman who literally stole from his bedchamber—with his new pocket watch—Devon plots his revenge. If the daring wench likes to play games, he’s happy to oblige. After all, what’s the ruse of being the Mad Duke if you can’t have some fun? But the last laugh might just be on him…

Re: Dukes Prefer Blondes, I picked it up and am probably not going to finish it. If it were a novella, it would be really fun and charming: the hero/heroine are great, their dynamic is great. Fun! Delightful! Stop at 50%! I’d agree that it feels like a book that’s a draft short of being done, or one someone finished and submitted under a tight deadline? Once the couple is a done deal, the rest of the book is the book just spinning its wheels for no real reason but adding pages.

  2. Heather S says:

“Courting Samira” by Amal Awad is $0.99 on Amazon. It’s a contemporary about a Palestinian-Australian Muslim woman looking for a husband. Reviews say it’s well-written, funny, and that they liked that the heroine is a practicing Muslim. It’s on my TBR.

  3. Ellen says:

When the Duke was Wicked is the first book of the sequel series to the one about the heroes & heroines raised by Fagin. It’s their children.

  4. Too much plot? My usual complaint is that there isn’t enough plot—and on occasion, there isn’t any at all.
I love plot—and I also loved Dukes Prefer Blondes (except for the silly title).

  5. ClaireC says:

I’m also Team Love on Dukes Prefer Blondes! Couldn’t get enough of the banter, loved both Clara and Oliver and thought it was very refreshing to get a view into “life after the altar”. I think I liked this book the most out of the entire series.

  6. Linda says:

@cordy I actually think Dukes Prefer Blondes goes from merely good to truly great past the 50% mark. Although right now I’m kind of more interested in books about relationships post the initial love/lust phase.

  7. Cordy (not stuck in spam filter sub-type) says:

I totally disagree with you there. I love books that take place after the wedding, but I found that the book had burned up all of its conflict and then just substituted the external conflict of mustache-twirling in ways I found sincerely baffling.

  8. Kate Y. says:

I loved Loretta Chase’s Must Love Dukes!! I had such a great time reading it that I then went back and reread Chase’s three previous (related) books.

I am not sure if someone else has mentioned this, but many of Katharine Ashe’s books are currently on sale for $1.99 (as ebooks) at both Barnes & Noble and Amazon. I just read her new release, The Rogue, so I am happily buying some of her older titles that I haven’t read yet. ^_^

  9. Madge says:

I agree that Dukes Prefer Blondes has 1) a horrid title, 2) even worse cover art (WTH is going on with her arms?), and 3) is somewhat busy in the plot dept., but I loved it. Loved. It. The romance between Clara and Oliver is awesome. And I grooved on the pre-marriage/post-marriage story construction. Like, stuff happens and your world changes before and after marriage and life keeps going regardless. Not sure that’s what Chase had in mind, but I appreciated the attempt at trying something a little more complex in this one. My favorite book in the Dressmakers series.
