Let It Shine

RECOMMENDED: Let It Shine by Alyssa Cole is 99c! This is a current DABWAHA nominee in the Novella bracket and it was Sarah’s favorite story in The Brightest Day: A Juneteenth Anthology:
OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. SQUEE CANNON IS SET TO STUN.
It might seem that I’m predisposed to like the one story with the Jewish character, but while I do raise a glass to my own bias (L’Chaim!), the writing in this story, coupled with the coincidental present/past parallels and the balance of tension and beauty made this story worth the cost of the anthology as a whole.
Sofronia Wallis knows that proper Black women don’t court trouble by upending the status quo, but it’s 1961 and the Civil Rights movement is in full swing. Sofie’s spent half her life being prim, proper, and reserved—as if that could bring her mother back—but the nonviolent protests happening across the South bring out her inner agitator.
Ivan Friedman has devoted his life to boxing, loving the finesse of a well-delivered punch and the penance of receiving one. His family escaped from Europe before the horrors of WWII, and Ivan decides to help fight injustice in their new country, even if it goes against all his instincts as a fighter.
When Ivan and Sofie meet, they realize that their pasts are intertwined and—with the sparks that fly between them—perhaps their futures will be too. With everything in their society lined up against them, will Sofie and Ivan be able to beat the odds? Or will their chance at love be destroyed by the tumultuous times they live in?

Thrill Me by Susan Mallery is $1.99! This is a small town, second chance romance with a hero, who is an extreme sports athlete. Readers loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine. However, this is book eighteen in the Fool’s Gold series and the heroine has played a secondary character in past books. Any fans of Fool’s Gold here?
Meet the Mitchell brothers of Fool’s Gold, California—five gorgeous men who’ve left a trail of broken hearts in their wake…
Maya Farlow learned the hard way to depend only on herself, so when she fell too deeply for the bad-boy charms of Del Mitchell, she did the only thing she could—she ran. Stunned, Del left Fool’s Gold to make his name and fortune in extreme sports.
Now ten years later, Maya’s been hired to promote her hometown’s new slogan, The Destination for Romance. The celebrity spokesman is none other than Del, the man she dumped but never forgot. Awkward!
Although Del’s not the type to hold a grudge, he’s determined to avoid falling a second time for the woman who broke his heart. He’s a daredevil, not an idiot. Trouble is, in all his adventures, he never found a rush as exhilarating as Maya’s kiss. Maybe risking his heart will prove to be the biggest thrill of all…

Brunch at Ruby’s by DL White is 99c right now! This is tagged as contemporary African-American women’s fiction, which is a lot of words to describe a book. It has a 4+ star average, and readers who enjoyed it liked the collection of heroines, particularly the close and vividly realistic friendship between them.
Ruby’s Soul Food Cafe has been the neighborhood hot spot their whole lives, so it’s only fitting that Ruby’s is where Debra, Maxine and Renee meet monthly to do what girlfriends do– eat, drink and offer unsolicited advice on life and love.
Debra Macklin has it all: a successful career, a long marriage and a happy 12 year old daughter. But she’s hiding a secret that could not only shatter her perfect image, but destroy her marriage and career. When her secret is spilled, Debra is poised to lose everything she holds dear.
Maxine Donovan is a self made woman but despite all she earns and owns, she’s on a constant quest for Mr. Right. Handsome, aloof Malcolm Brooks might just be The One, but when Malcolm’s attention turns toward her friend instead, Maxine is ready to risk a strong bond to fight for him.
Renee Gladwell left a lucrative job and a handsome boyfriend to nurse her father and Gladwell Books back to health. A temporary stay has turned into four years of struggling with Alzheimer’s and a family owned bookstore that is in no shape to sell. Renee is in limbo, caring for a man who is slowly forgetting his past—including her. When she meets Malcolm Brooks, her life brightens, but is love worth risking a friendship?

Readers recommend this if you want more recipes for comfort food, while others mentioned there’s a lot of text for a cookbook. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

Mmmmmmmm Mac & Cheese!!
Killing my budget but these books sound great! I’ve been waiting for Brunch at Rubys to go on sale. Let it shine sounds like it might get me out of my reading slump. .. Here’s hoping.
I entered Fool’s Gold with the Justice / Felicity / Ford arc, then went back and started from the beginning. As a whole, the series has been hit-or-miss for me, and I couldn’t get into any of the 2015 releases. I will continue to thumb through them, though, if only out of curiosity to see if Mallery will bring some resolution to the Mayor Marsha arch-storyline (beyond the revelations about Mayor Marsha in “Chasing Perfect”, it doesn’t seem like much more time has been spent on her on backstory).
There are ~*18*~ Fool’s Gold books!?! Wow. I read the first 3 when they came out and then maybe a couple few more but I had no idea it was still going strong.
It seems like all of those m/f couples would conflict with the original premise of the series – does the town of Fool’s Gold still have a lot more women than men?
I’m definitely buying Brunch at Ruby’s! Robyn Carr has written a lot of books about girlfriends & their lives, which I always enjoy. This one looks to be in the same vein & sounds like a really good read!
Alyssa Cole for .99?
I wrote “click” on the previous comment but it disappeared!
@ Jen, I started the Fool’s Gold series with the same trio and went back, started over, and have kept up with the series. With the exception of Kiss Me, last year’s releases didn’t do much for me. I believe there is only one Fool’s Gold book this year.
@ Cleo, for some reason, guys keep showing up at Fool’s Gold and falling in love. 😉
I want that Brunch at Ruby’s book, but there’s not a nook option. Wah! It’s $17 from Powell’s. 🙁 That’s not really a sale option.
@LisaJo885: We usually try to include a Powell’s link even if a book isn’t on sale there. That way, people have the option of supporting an independent bookstore should they choose to go that route!
Thanks for the Alyssa Cole tip! I just started “Let it Shine” and love it so far: Well-written, feminist/intersectional, romantic, and an awesome change from the usual historical. And I think she references Claudette Colvin’s activism, which is pretty neat.
