You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!
This HaBO request comes from Sui, who hopes to find an older historical romance:
I hope you can help me out. I’ve been trying to find this book for ages but no luck.
I don’t remember much detail about the book. I read it when I was younger (~20yrs ago). I think it was a Regency or around that time period. The hero and heroine joined forces to solve a crime/find someone. The hero is rich. I think he was a lord and the heroine is an impoverished lady, maybe a governess.
I remember one scene where they went to a whorehouse or a whore’s room to interview someone and then some villain(s) were looking for them, or maybe they wanted to speak to the whore. The hero and heroine don’t want to be found, so the whore told them to hide in her room and she’ll deal with them. While they were hiding, they had sex standing up. When the whore comes back, she says something like, “Whew, I thought I aired the room out” or “Sorry, I thought I’d aired it out.” Then she realizes that the two probably just did it. It stuck with me since at the time I didn’t know that it smells.
Very little detail, I know, but I hope someone remembers.
I think I’m more amazed that two people can have sex while being pursued by bad guys. Anyone know this one?
I keep thinking Christina Dodd, because she had a whole series of Governess novels, and I feel like I read this scene, but I can’t remember any more than that.
So many governess novels…
I know it’s an Amanda Quick novel but I can’t remember which one!
Amanda Quick, With This Ring, the first in her Vanza regency series. Here’s the quote:
“Whew.” Clarinda wrinkled her nose as she walked in the small room. “Thought I’d aired out the place after my last customer. Sorry, I didn’t do a proper job of it. Ye should have opened the window. Oh” She broke off to give Beatrice’s disheveled figure a quick, knowing survey. “Well, now. Looks like the two of ye found a way to pass the time while I was gone.”
Hah, I knew it was Amanda Quick too, but I’m terrible at remembering her book titles. I do remember that book – thanks @M.
I also remembered it being by Amanda Quick, but I couldn’t remember the title. The heroine wrote “horror” novels to make ends meet.
Thanks M! That looks like the book I’m looking for. Will check it out later.
I was just thinking surely not, it’s like hairy legs, we just skim over….holy mother of puppies a direct quote!
I remember that scene! I would even have guessed Amanda Quick, but well done @M for knowing the book and finding the quote!
lol…
Damn, the one time I knew the answer (I’m totally not a romance reader, but I love these reviews) and I was beaten to it!
