His Until Midnight

RECOMMENDED: His Until Midnight by Nikki Logan is $1.99! This is a contemporary category romance and, despite the jerkish hero, Elyse gave the book a B:
I read His Until Midnight over the course of one …um…extended…lunch hour because once I got into the book it kept pulling me along. The thing I liked most about this story was how unusual the structure was—80% of the book takes place over the space of one day—and how it really built momentum. Unfortunately, the hero really pissed me off at the end.
He could look…and this time he can touch!
Each year, Hong Kong’s most kissable businessman Oliver Harmer allows himself one Christmas present: a lavish meal with off-limits Audrey Devaney. Keeping her at arm’s length—quite literally!—is a battle of epic proportions for Oliver, but also an irresistible temptation. Until the year she doesn’t come.
Now the rules have changed! Because, this Christmas, Audrey is single, and Oliver must decide if he will let her run away at midnight for good, or fight for her to stay until morning!

Various States of Undress: Carolina by Laura Simcox is 99c! This contemporary romance is the first book in the Various States of Undress series. There’s so much catnip going on here. A snowbound plot. The heroine is the daughter of the POTUS. The hero is a bodyguard. C’mon, it’s almost a little unfair. While most reviews labeled this a quick, fun read, others mentioned that maybe it was a little too quick, especially when it came to the pacing of the relationship. The rest of the series also happens to be on sale!
What happens when the president’s daughter and her sexy Secret Service agent find themselves snowbound? A little cabin fever, some serious forbidden attraction, and Various States of Undress …
When Carolina Fulton, daughter of the President of the United States, dumps her cheating fiancé, she knows she needs a break from life in Washington. Spending some quality alone time in her family’s Wyoming cabin seems like a perfect escape—except for the hot Secret Service agent who shadows her every move. Miles away from civilization, Carolina quickly realizes that ignoring the smoky eyes, carved chin, and mile-wide pair of shoulders is going to require more than a little self-control.
Elite agent Jake Baxter knows better than to develop feelings for his clients. After all, he’s not being paid to fantasize about running his fingers through Carolina’s dark hair, kissing her senseless, or waking up next to her petite, curvy body. But as a blizzard rages outside their all-too-cozy cabin, Jake knows he has to put the freeze on this attraction, in case his job—or his heart—is suddenly laid on the line.

All I Want is You by Toni Blake is $1.99! This is a small town contemporary romance with a road trip thrown in for good measure. Some readers thought there was too much description and not enough dialogue and action. Others loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine. It has a 3.6-star rating on Goodreads.
Sometimes you have to create your own destiny…
Christy Knight grew up in Destiny, Ohio, but lately she feels that her future lies elsewhere. Her parents are gone and the beautiful jewelry she creates doesn’t pay the bills. Maybe it’s time for Christy to grow up and find a guy who’s smart, sexy, and solvent. Her rugged handyman neighbor fits the first two categories, but he’s all wrong for her. If only he didn’t have such captivating blue eyes.
Wary of trusting others, Jack DuVall hasn’t been entirely honest with Christy. He’s not really a handyman. He’s not really broke. And sharing the long drive to visit her beloved grandpa isn’t just about gallantry—he finds gorgeous, feisty Christy completely irresistible.
When secrets are exposed, Jack and Christy struggle to find their way back to one another, but the quirky seaside town of Coral Cove could prove the perfect place to find a red-hot destiny of their own.

Driving Her Crazy by Kira Archer is 99c! This is another contemporary romance with a road trip, so if that’s your catnip, be careful with your book budget today! Readers loved the opposites attract element between the hero and heroine. However, some found the beginning a little slow. Have you read this one?
Driven to (sexy) distraction…
Cher Debusshere hates being the black sheep of her posh, well-to-do family almost as much as she hates driving-which is exactly what she’s forced to do when her flight home for her perfect sister’s wedding is grounded. Fan-freakin’-tastic. Then a hot guy offers to share both the car rental and the driving duties…only to drive her crazy by assuming she’s just some spoiled little rich girl.
Mechanic Nathaniel “Oz” Oserkowski is about as blue-collar as they come. There’s never been a time he hasn’t worked his ass off, and he’s determined to prove it to the gorgeous princess in the passenger seat. As the miles pass, they bait and needle each other…until their lust and longing gets so hot it nearly overheats the engine.
They have nothing in common. Hell, they can barely stand each other. But sometimes it takes a journey to change the destination…

I read Various States of Undress: Carolina recently and thought it was OK. The ending was silly and there was A LOT of slut shaming and other misogyny in the opening chapters (and a bit throughout the rest of the book) which nearly made me dnf early on. But there was some semi-decent stuff in the middle, so I think I ended up giving it two stars.
Ahh I’ve been meaning to read His Until Midnight. (BEEN MEANING TO READ IT FOR SEVERAL YEARS.)
That said, the premise of that book reminds me of Javier Marias’ The Infatuations. Except in that book the Best Friend’s Wife thing is slimy and complex for so many reasons. I highly recommend it though. The main character (who isn’t the widow) is probably one of my favorite literary depictions of a women written by a man in terms of realism. (That I’ve read at least.)
(Whatever you might say about Franzen/Eugenides/DFW, their depictions of women were always varying degrees of unrealistic, which can only be partially attributed to how exaggerated their styles were. IMO, the only book where it really *worked* for me was The Virgin Suicides, but that’s because the girls were viewed through the eyes of the local boys.)
The majority of the Harlequin KISS titles are always $1.99. Man, I was so bummed when they discontinued that category line!
I basically shared Elyse’s reaction to His Until Midnight. It was very nearly brilliant, and I was very impressed with the way the author managed to convey the couple’s extensive complicated history despite the fact that so much of the story takes place on one day, but it kind of lost me near the end, and I wish she’d taken it in a slightly different direction. But I definitely recommend it.
The Harlequin KISS line was very hit-and-miss for me. I DNFed a lot of them after one chapter, but was very impressed with some of the others.
