Divergent
Divergent by Veronica Roth is $1.99! This is a dystopian young adult novel and the first in the Divergent series. I honestly have mixed feelings about this book. For me, it wasn’t necessarily good or bad, though it didn’t make me want to continue with the rest of the series. I felt the last quarter of the book was rather dark and didn’t match the rest of the book. There were also too many superfluous kissing breaks. However, your mileage may vary and I know many people who love the Divergent trilogy. What do you think?
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Heat Exchange
Heat Exchange by Shannon Stacey is $1.99! If the cover is any indication, firefighters await in this contemporary romance. It also features the “off limits best friend’s sister” trope, if that’s your catnip. Sarah also picked it for August’s Hide Your Wallet post. Some readers weren’t a fan of the heroine and found her to be self-centered, while others found it to be a great start to Stacey’s new Boston Fire series. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.
Lydia Kincaid’s shipping back to Boston, but she’s not happy about it. She left to get away from the firefighting community—her father was a firefighter, her brother’s a firefighter and, more important, her ex is a firefighter. But family is number one, and her father needs her help running the pub he bought when he retired. Soon, Lydia finds it hard to resist the familiar comfort and routine, and even harder to resist her brother’s handsome friend Aidan.
Aidan Hunt is a firefighter because of the Kincaid family. He’s had the hots for Lydia for years, but if ever a woman was off-limits to him, it’s her. Aside from being his mentor’s daughter, she’s his best friend’s sister. The ex-wife of a fellow firefighter. But his plan to play it cool until she leaves town again fails, and soon he and Lydia have crossed a line they can’t uncross.
As Aidan and Lydia’s flirtation turns into something more serious, Lydia knows she should be planning her escape. Being a firefighter’s wife was the hardest thing she’s ever done, and she doesn’t know if she has the strength to do it again. Aidan can’t imagine walking away from Boston Fire—even for Lydia. The job and the brotherhood are his life; but if he wants Lydia in it, he’ll have to decide who’s first in his heart.

Reinventing Romeo
Reinventing Romeo by Connie Lane is 99c! This is a contemporary romance with a fake relationship between an FBI agent and a millionaire. Many readers say that you need a suspension of disbelief for this romance as it reads more like a slice-of-life, romantic comedy. So if you prefer your romances with some substantial realism, this may not be for you.
Anything can happen when an eligible bachelor and a beautiful FBI agent go undercover as man and wife.
Millionaire Alex Romero leads a fantasy life filled with money, women, and excitement. FBI agent Kate Ellison puts her life on the line every day. They never would have met in normal circumstances. But now Alex can provide something Kate needs: testimony that may help her put away some very nasty criminals. Sounds doable—until a hired killer comes after Alex. To protect her asset, Kate agrees to go into hiding with him in a safe location. It’s bad enough having to babysit the world’s sexiest man—pretending to be married to him is even worse.
Alex had given up hope that the right girl would come along, but from the moment he and Kate begin their ruse in a sleepy new Midwestern neighborhood, everything changes. Maybe it’s the simple pleasures of suburban life, but Alex feels as if Kate is someone he can really settle down with. Now the only thing Alex must do is stay alive long enough to convince Kate that, beneath all the games, they have something real.

The Draculia Vampire Trilogy
The Draculia Vampire Trilogy by Colleen Gleason is $9.95! This is a paranormal Regency romance series with vampires and you can get all three books for less than $10! As a bonus, though, Gleason is also including the first book in her Gardella Chronicles series, The Rest Falls Away, which Sarah and I enjoyed, and Carrie gave a C+. So technically, that makes the set four books for less than $10!
From award-winning, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Colleen Gleason: a collection of three full-length novels of vampire romance set in 19th century London. Dark, decadent, sexy, and witty, the Draculia Trilogy is filled with suspense, passion, and romance.
The Vampire Voss: The Rogue
Even after centuries of lust, hedonism, and women, Voss, the Viscount Dewhurst, rarely finds himself bored. As a member of the Dracule, he is a rogue of the first order, a man who loves nothing more than a warm woman, excellent vintage, and even a puzzling challenge to keep his mind active. But when one of his seemingly harmless manipulations sets him on the path to seduce the beautiful Miss Angelica Woodmore, things become a little less simple…a lot more passionate…and definitely more complicated.
The Vampire Dimitri: The Saint
For decades, Dimitri, the Earl of Corvindale, has denied himself the most basic of pleasures in his attempt to free himself from the grip of his immortality. He disdains women, entertainment, and all but the most basic of sustenance in an effort to break his covenant with the devil. But when he becomes the guardian for two young women—including the beautiful, maddening, and stubborn Lady Maia Woodmore—his life is disrupted and he’s forced to face the emptiness from centuries of solitude.

When she loses one of her gladiator-type battles, her opponent’s prize is the use of her body for the night. It is no wonder Narcise cannot trust a man…even Giordan Cale, the handsome vampire who vows to free her from her brother’s captivity. But his promise is followed by a deep, shocking betrayal—destroying her heart and trust forever.
Yet, Narcise finds a new savior in vampire hunter Chas Woodmore. He wants her, he worships her…he will kill for her.

I am so with you on Divergent. I read the first book, and never went back around for the next two. I still don’t really care if I ever read them. B minus, for me, maybe C plus. But one of my best friends LOVED this series. So there you go.
Divergent and its sequel were just okay. I never bothered to read the final one. It felt a little bit too much “by rote”, ticking off all the boxes for “edgy” post-apocalyptic dystopia, so that you can predict what’s going to happen to everyone. Conceptually, I like the idea of having a story about a girl who’s expected to do what she’s told and grow up demure and accepting going, “Nope, I want the hardest, craziest life I can” and slugging it out past everyone else’s expectations. In execution, though, it’s a little meh.
I read the Divergent books, but they were only OK and the ending really pissed me off. The Hunger Games were much better.
Rosanne Bittner’s Tame The Wild Wind is free right now if you want to go back, waaay back.
And totally unrelated to book sales, but Honest Trailers has just paid homage to Labyrinth.
The second book in the Divergent series was the first book I ever “hate-read”. So many holes in the world-building & plot that just kept pulling me out of the story. Didn’t feel bad about not finishing the series.
I grudgingly made it partway into the 3rd book of the Divergent series then read ahead to see what the ending was. And walked away.
But if you want to connect with your teenage niece, you speak Divergent. Worked for me.
I really liked the Boston Fire book!!
Hee, ‘superfluous kissing breaks’ is now my favourite phrase of the week.
