  • Halfway to the Grave

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

RECOMMENDED: Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost is $1.99! This is the first book in the Cat & Bones/Night Huntress series, and Sarah reviewed it back when it came out in 2007:

This nocturnal badassery comes to a screeching halt when Cat is kidnapped by an exceptionally strong nosferatu named Bones, who is really, really old, really, really strong, and really, really, really sure that Cat is working for someone, someone who wants him dead.

When Cat, sure her end is about two seconds away, tells him the truth about her life and mission, Bones refuses to believe her, until Cat’s emotions get the better of her and her eyes glow green. Bones, who is not a dumbass after many hundreds of years of existence, makes her an offer: train with him, and work with him as a vampire bounty hunter, or die.

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

  • Sunshine

    Sunshine by Robin McKinley

Sunshine by Robin McKinley is $1.99! McKinley has been recommended several times at SBTB HQ. Some readers label this as young adult and, for the most part, I’d agree with that sentiment. According to reviews on Goodreads, there were complaints about the balance of narrative to action, but many loved this different take on the vampire story. I know many of you have read this one, so let us know in the comments whether you loved it or hated it!

“Her feet are already bleeding – if you like feet…”

There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it’s unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn’t been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don’t, when they’re vampires.

They took her clothes and sneakers. They dressed her in a long red gown. And they shackled her to the wall of an abandoned mansion – within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight.

She knows that he is a vampire. She knows that she’s to be his dinner, and that when he is finished with her, she will be dead. Yet, as dawn breaks, she finds that he has not attempted to harm her. And now it is he who needs her to help him survive the day…

  • Seduce Me in Flames

Seduce Me in Flames by Jacquelyn Frank

Seduce Me in Flames by Jacquelyn Frank is 99c! This is the second book in the Three Worlds scifi romance series. It also features a space princess heroine and a hero who must escort her to safety. Also, the hero is a virgin! CATNIP! Some readers found the romance to be a little muddied with so many details going on, while others loved the world Frank created. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

  • Starry Knight

    Starry Knight by Nina Mason

Starry Knight by Nina Mason is 99c! This is the first book in the Knights of Avalon series, a paranormal romance series. This book has a British aristocrat searching for a vampire and finding a shapeshifting faerie hero instead. As one does. Several readers mentioned that the heroine takes some getting used to, but many thought the book was a great start to a new series. Anyone interested?

Can these star-crossed lovers bridge two worlds?

British aristocrat Vanessa Bentley has beauty, fame, and fortune, but she gets no respect for her decision to become a paranormal investigator. Determined to prove the naysayers wrong, Vanessa ventures to the misty moors of Caithness, Scotland. There stands the immense Castle Barrogill, where a vampire is rumored to be stalking the dungeons—a vampire Vanessa is determined to find. She’ll just have to get past the resident shape-shifter…

Callum Lyon is the gorgeous reclusive astrologer and faery knight who guards the castle. For free-spirited Vanessa, seducing him proves to be easy. After all, he was once a breeding drone to a Queen. But astrologically, their differences are harder to overcome. Will Vanessa’s mission—and Callum’s secrets—be more than their burgeoning love can take? Or will flesh—and blood—win over the ghosts that haunt them both?

  1. Sally says:

I just read Sunshine for the first time this summer and LOVED it. I like that it’s much more about the narrator coming into herself as a person than any traditional vampire stories, and there are a number of interesting and idiosyncratic kinds of relationships in her life that grow and change over the course of the story. I don’t think I’d quite call it YA, at least in how I’m used to thinkin about YA tones these days–the heroine is in her early 20s but the emotions are subtle rather than heightened.

  2. Liz says:

I read Sunshine a few years ago and re-read it this summer during a reading slump. It does have long stretches of narrative (info dump style) which is irritating because Robin McKinley has said she will not write a sequel. Info dump is more palatable when it’s a set-up for a series IMO. But having said that, it remains a book I really, really like. It’s a fascinating world she has created. Although – another caveat – it ends kind of abruptly so if you like closure, do not read this!

I have a middle schooler who reads YA and I would not give this book to her.

Very curious to see if anyone has read Starry Night. Sounds really intriguing.

  3. Angie says:

    SUNSHINE is a perfect book.

  4. Katie Lynn says:

It’s been a few years, but I really enjoyed Sunshine. Enough that I actually kept a copy (I tend to give books I didn’t enjoy or have no intention of reading again to the used book store). It’s much darker than McKinley’s other books, naturally, but it still has her excellent world building.

  5. JessicaG says:

I love Sunshine, and have for many years. It’s one of my go-to comfort reads for a reading slump, a sick day in bed, or when my depression makes me want to crawl in a hole.

  6. Heather S says:

“Ancillary Justice” by Ann Leckie and “The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller are KDDs today for $1.99 each.

  7. Lorena says:

I LOVE,LOVE, LOVE Sunshine and already own a copy, but went to purchase the ebook version off of Barnes & Noble. For anyone who clicks the link in the email/webpage, the correct link for the $1.99 version is (the one linked has a $7.99 price point…): http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/sunshine-robin-mckinley/1100478235?ean=9781497673717

    Happy reading!

  8. jw says:

@Liz to be very honest, in middle school I was reading authors like Tamora Pierce, Jacqueline Carey and a lot of graphic and probably anatomically incorrect fanfiction. I have a sister who’s in middle school who I recommend books to all the time and I think Sunshine (like Naomi Norvik’s fantastic Uprooted) would be a weird book to get from your parent/sibling, but I wouldn’t disallow a middle schooler to read either if they happened upon it.

Also, on the subject of Uprooted, I’ve gotten into arguments about whether it is too graphic. Personally, I think if Jorge in the Broken Empire trilogy flies as grimdark YA (which I think it should), it’s weird to for people to then wave their hands puritanically because consensual sex is more descriptive than the YA norm in Uprooted.
