Iced

Iced by Karen Marie Moning is $1.99 right now. This is the 6th book of the Fever series, and the first in the Dani O’Malley trilogy. More than a few readers have said this is a great place to enter the series if you’re not sure about it. This book has a 4+ star average.
The year is 1 AWC—After the Wall Crash. The Fae are free and hunting us. It’s a war zone out there, and no two days are alike. I’m Dani O’Malley, the chaos-filled streets of Dublin are my home, and there’s no place I’d rather be.
Dani “Mega” O’Malley plays by her own set of rules—and in a world overrun by Dark Fae, her biggest rule is: Do what it takes to survive. Possessing rare talents and the all-powerful Sword of Light, Dani is more than equipped for the task. In fact, she’s one of the rare humans who can defend themselves against the Unseelie. But now, amid the pandemonium, her greatest gifts have turned into serious liabilities.Dani’s ex–best friend, MacKayla Lane, wants her dead, the terrifying Unseelie princes have put a price on her head, and Inspector Jayne, the head of the police force, is after her sword and will stop at nothing to get it. What’s more, people are being mysteriously frozen to death all over the city, encased on the spot in sub-zero, icy tableaux.
When Dublin’s most seductive nightclub gets blanketed in hoarfrost, Dani finds herself at the mercy of Ryodan, the club’s ruthless, immortal owner. He needs her quick wit and exceptional skill to figure out what’s freezing Fae and humans dead in their tracks—and Ryodan will do anything to ensure her compliance.
Dodging bullets, fangs, and fists, Dani must strike treacherous bargains and make desperate alliances to save her beloved Dublin—before everything and everyone in it gets iced.

RECOMMENDED: Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost is $2.99. This is the first book in the Cat & Bones/Night Huntress series, and I reviewed it back when it came out in 2007:
This nocturnal badassery comes to a screeching halt when Cat is kidnapped by an exceptionally strong nosferatu named Bones, who is really, really old, really, really strong, and really, really, really sure that Cat is working for someone, someone who wants him dead.
When Cat, sure her end is about two seconds away, tells him the truth about her life and mission, Bones refuses to believe her, until Cat’s emotions get the better of her and her eyes glow green. Bones, who is not a dumbass after many hundreds of years of existence, makes her an offer: train with him, and work with him as a vampire bounty hunter, or die.
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.
In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Dark Prince: Uncut Edition by Christine Feehan is $1.99. This is an updated edition of Dark Prince, the first in the Carpathian series, which is a classic I think among the long running paranormal romance series. There are some, ah, repeated elements in each book, and I wasn’t wild about this edition when it came out, but I still love this story, and will get sucked in if I so much as touch it. If you haven’t read it, $1.99 is a great price to try – but be warned, it can be addictive.
Carpathians are an immortal race of beings with animal instincts. Every Carpathian male is drawn to his life mate: a Carpathian or human female able to provide the light to his darkness. Without her, the beast within slowly consumes the man until turning vampire is the only option.
Raven Whitney is a psychic who has used her gift to help the police track down a serial killer. Now she is determined to escape the glare of recent publicity for the peace and quiet of the Carpathian Mountains.
Prince Mikhail Dubrinsky is the leader of his people but, as his ancient Carpathian race grows ever closer to extinction, he is close to giving in to the heavy weight of loneliness and despair. From the moment their minds touch, Raven and Mikhail form a connection. But there are those who incorrectly view all Carpathians as vampires, and are determined to give their extinction a helping hand.

To be honest, I’m not sure I’d say Iced is a great point to enter the series. I hadn’t read the originals in a while, and the first chapter of Iced piles on SO SO many references, characters, creatures, and more with the assumption that you already know what they all are, that it was impossible for me to get into without rereading the others. Your mileage may vary. The originals are definitely worth a read though. I like them for having a heroine who goes through a LOT of personal growth, but shows you can be badass and still enjoy being “girly” or into fashion and whatnot, since a lot of other material seems to think otherwise. Hero is a bit of an alphahole, but heroine doesn’t let him push her around.
I bought This Crumbling Pageant a while back, but I’m having a hard time getting into it. It’s really dense, and you sort of come in with all this weird stuff happening, and it takes a long time before anyone starts explaining anything. I think I had to check like four times to reassure myself I hadn’t missed a book. Buy it if you’re looking for something that really demands a lot of your attention and has a lot of complexity, but maybe not if you’re looking for a fun, fast read. (If so, I recommend the Night Huntress series!)
I superloved Frost’s Night Huntress series. Bones has more than a whiff of Buffy’s Spike about him, which really, is just talking me into rereading them myself.
I adored the Night Huntress series, especially the first books. Although I admit by the 5th book I was skimming and lost interest. I must be one of the rare breed that Did Not care that much for the Fever series by Moning. I loved the first and second book but was soooo frustrated with that third one (Faefever?) that I stopped reading. I admit to skimming the last one in the book store to catch up on the series. Having said that I adored Iced with the focal point on Dani and then that second one came out and swung the attention to Mac again and some strange goings on with Dani. Verdict still out but I’ll give it a third book try as I did with the Fever series.
This Crumbling Pageant just keeps going. Every time I felt like it was getting somewhere, a whole new chapter would start, and I found it frustrating. I have it half-read on my kindle, and it’s been there for months.
I thought the Fever series was going to be too dark for me. I love my HEA in a nice and tidy world. But then I read the first 5 books and loved it. I was hesitant to pick up Iced because of how young Dani is but after a month of resisting, I bought it, read it, and thought it was brilliant.
Dani felt like a real teenager to me. Someone who wanted to be an adult but when the shit hit the fan and she had to actually adult; found it quite hard to do. The nuanced sexuality amongst the adults fly over her head; she refers to Barrons as old and is weirded out about her feelings and budding sexuality. This hit the nail for me since I could remember being 13/14 years old and thinking that the 22 year old who hit on me was weird, creepy, and old AF. I had such hope for the rest of the series to come and to watch her grow into herself. At that point the (Fever) world was such a mess that age didn’t matter anymore, everyone grew up fast. But then KMM released book seven and all I could hear was sad trombone playing in the background as Dani was basically wiped out and Mac was the center again.
So, if you want to read a book with a complex main character with lots of potential to grow into her own; please get this book! If you want to feel let down; read book seven.
