HaBO: Wig-Wearing Heroine Lives It Up on Cruise Ship

Welcome to another Sunday HaBO and this request comes from Ellen, who wants to read more about the awesome heroine in this contemporary romance:

The heroine is a little older–going grey, maybe? She’s in a job that she finds boring, and has been a “good daughter” to a VERY oppressive father. She believes that they’re broke as heck, but when he dies, she discovers that he was actually a miser and now she’s rich.

She’s PISSED AS HECK and decides to do foolish things with the money. One of them is to buy a wig and go on a cruise and meet someone to have a fling with.

I don’t remember anything about the hero. I just want to read about that heroine again.

I’m currently channeling this heroine as I’m on a cruise ship in the Caribbean at the moment. Does anyone know this one?

  1. I thought for a moment it was the Vicki Lewis Thompson cruise ship one from her Nerd series, but there’s not an inheritance, just an extreme makeover because the heroine witnessed a crime.

And golly, there are a LOT of cruise ship romance novels…

WAIT, Phyllis, you can’t just drop “an extreme makeover because the heroine witnessed a crime” and not tell us more.

  3. LOL!

    “Nerds ahoy!
A cruise for single nerds hits a little too close to home for P.I. Lex Manchester, but he can’t say no when curvaceous makeup artist Gillian McCormick becomes the sole witness to a murder and is on the run from the killer. The plan? Hop onto a cruise ship bound for Mexico with Gillian disguised as a Marilyn Monroe look-alike and Lex as her nerdy, undercover bodyguard.

But their safe haven becomes a prison as mysterious accidents convince Lex that someone else is in disguise and onboard – the man who wants Gillian dead. Lex is determined to protect her, but he didn’t count on his heart becoming part of the equation, placing him in a no-win scenario. Whether he succeeds or fails, the ship will eventually dock . . . and he’ll lose her forever. “

At first, I thought it was Burn by Linda Howard. But, again…no inheritance plot. Below is the summary from Goodreads:

Money certainly changes Jenner Redwine’s life when she wins a lottery jackpot. But it also costs her plenty: Her father rips her off and disappears, her fortune-hunting boyfriend soon becomes her ex, and friends-turned-freeloaders give her the cold shoulder when she stops paying for everything.

Flush with new money, Jenner can’t imagine ever finding a place in the world of the wealthy. Seven years later, though, she’s rubbing elbows with the rich, despite the fact she still feels like a party crasher. Luckily she finds an ally–-and a guide to the rarefied realm of privilege–-in shy, kind-hearted heiress Sydney Hazlett, who quickly becomes Jenner’s confidante and surrogate sister.

When Sydney invites Jenner on a charity cruise aboard a luxury liner, Jenner reluctantly agrees. But while she’s expecting–-and dreading–-two weeks of masquerade balls, art auctions, and preening glitterati, what she gets is more like a Hitchcock movie than a Love Boat episode. Taken hostage by a menacing stranger, Jenner must cooperate in a mysterious cloak-and-dagger scheme-–or else. With nowhere to run, and with Sydney’s life as well as her own at risk, Jenner is drawn into a game of dizzying intrigue and harrowing danger. But as her panic gives way to exhilaration, and fear of her captor turns to fascination, Jenner rediscovers feelings she hasn’t had in years–-and realizes she’s found a life worth living. If she can survive…

I’m in the middle of listening to Burn right now and that’s definitely not it. And FWIW, it started off well but now I’m bored silly. Not Howard’s best.

  6. I have no idea which book is being sought for. But I am guessing the wig is going to turn out to be something significant. After all, it would hide the gray so much better to dye it.

  7. garlicknitter says:

@Sarah Yeah, I loved the first part of Burn where Jenner figures out how to handle suddenly being rich, but most of the suspense stuff…just didn’t work for me, even though I usually like Howard’s suspense.

When-I-win-the-lottery is one of my favorite games when I’m daydreaming.

Would like to read this book, sounds interesting.
    Found this, hope it helps
