Painting the Moon

RECOMMENDED: Painting the Moon by Traci Borum is 99c! Sarah reviewed this as part of our first ever Lightning Reviews post and gave it a B-:
This book had a good balance of revealing the mystery, introducing the town and the way of life in the Cotswolds, and allowing Noelle to figure things out at a pace that was interesting for the reader and didn’t make Noelle look like an idiot. If anything, she was very smart and emotionally savvy, and navigating grief and family secrets is exhausting for anyone.
When Noelle Cooke inherits a quaint English cottage and an art gallery from her famous Aunt Joy, she welcomes a departure from her San Diego routine. But the lure of the Cotswolds, combined with a locked cottage room and a revealing journal, entice her to stay and discover more, including a way to save the gallery from financial ruin. And that means remaining in England.
When her childhood sweetheart, Adam Spencer, begins work on a restoration project in Noelle’s village, their friendship blossoms. But as her feelings for Adam deepen, she struggles with memories of what might have been and yearns for a future once thought lost. Faced with a life-altering revelation Aunt Joy took to her grave and a wrenching choice regarding the man she loves, Noelle could lose far more than her heart.

First Touch by Laurelin Paige is $3.99! This book just came out and I mentioned in on December’s Hide Your Wallet post. This is definitely on the darker side and does have a cliffhanger. Some readers had trouble connecting with the heroine, but many say this is a book that will grab you and not let go. It has a 4.3-star rating on Goodreads.
When Emily Wayborn receives an answerphone message from her former best friend Amber, she knows something is seriously wrong. Emily hasn’t spoken to Amber in years, and when Amber uses a safe word in her message that Emily recognises — a word they always used to get out of sticky situations during their wild partying days — she knows Amber needs her help. But when Emily tries to find her, she discovers that Amber is missing.
Determined to track her down, Emily follows a chain of clues that lead her to enigmatic billionaire Reeve Sallis. Renowned for his shady dealings and playboy reputation, Emily is convinced that Reeve knows something about Amber’s disappearance. To try and discover the truth, Emily sets out to seduce him. But when she’s forced to decide where her loyalty lies, how will Emily choose between saving Amber and saving her heart?
If you devoured Fifty Shades and Sylvia Day’s Bared To You series, you will love the latest intoxicating, passionate and addictive novel from New York Times bestseller Laurelin Paige.

My One and Only by Kristan Higgans is $2.99! This is a contemporary second chance romance with a road trip plot. Catnip, anyone? Some readers felt the romance was predictable and just sort of meh, while others really loved how Higgins handled the second chance/reunited exes trope. Readers also mentioned the book has some great secondary characters. Have you read this one?
Just when she thought she had life and love all figured out…

Virgin River by Robyn Carr is $1.99! This is the very first book in her very popular and longstanding Virgin River series, and features a mystery baby and a military hero. This series has been mentioned a couple times on the site, especially if you like small town romances. Many of the other books in the series are also on sale for $1.99, so stock up while you can!

I bought Virgin River but I think that it is going to be a big fat DNF. Some mild spoilers below:
I cannot forgive women slut shaming other women in romance. I am especially not okay with a MIDWIFE slut shaming a 14 year-old girl (even just in her head). I also feel like a midwife should actually, idk, practice safe sex. Also there is a sex scene between a 16 year old boy and said 14 year old girl. It was weird – not because teenagers shouldn’t have sex in a book –but because it felt so unnecessary and unnecessarily graphic. I also didn’t like how the (adult male) hero viewed the teenage girl as simply sexual object. I think that sex scenes with teenagers can be graphic in a YA novel because they are written with teenagers as the intended audience. This book is clearly for adults. It was just ….. icky.
@ChrisK SAMESIES! I couldn’t finish that one either when I’ve been able to finish other books in the same series. I read them out of order, but I can never get through this one because I hate Mel and Jack so much. Also, they keep taking up significant portions of later books to the point where I might as well have read novellas about the other couples. It’s so frustrating because I couldn’t care less about them.
“I also feel like a midwife should actually, idk, practice safe sex. ”
HAHAHA, this is so true! [SPOILERS AHEAD] And it happens AGAIN in a later book, to the point where I worry about what she’s telling her patients.
I love all of Kristan Higgins’ books (including My One & Only). Put me in the thumbs up category. Catnip indeed!
