Ivy and Bean

Ivy and Bean by Annie Barrows and Sophie Blackall is less than $3 at most vendors! Prices seem to fluctuate depending on the site, but the typical ebook edition runs around $5. Amazon has it for 99c, Google:Play has it for $1.30, and Barnes & Noble and All Romance has it for $2.99! I’ve heard such great things about this series from my friends who work in children’s publishing. This is more along the lines of middle grade fiction than young adult or a picture book.
The moment they saw each other, Bean and Ivy knew they wouldn’t be friends. But when Bean plays a joke on her sister, Nancy, and has to hide quickly, Ivy comes to the rescue, proving that sometimes the best of friends are people never meant to like each other. Vibrant characters and lots of humor make this a charming and addictive introduction to Ivy and Bean.

The Berlin Boxing Club by Robert Sharenow is $1.99! This is an award-winning piece historical teen fiction and has been compared to books like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and The Book Thief. The book does deal with sensitive subject matter, so please keep that in mind. There were some complains in regards to story vs writing: the plot was compelling but it lacked some execution. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.
Sydney Taylor Award-winning novel Berlin Boxing Club is loosely inspired by the true story of boxer Max Schmeling’s experiences following Kristallnacht.
Karl Stern has never thought of himself as a Jew. But the bullies at his school in Nazi-era Berlin, don’t care that Karl has never been in a synagogue or that his family doesn’t practice religion. Demoralized by attacks on a heritage he doesn’t accept as his own, Karl longs to prove his worth.

But when Nazi violence against Jews escalates, Karl must take on a new role: protector of his family. And as Max’s fame forces him to associate with Hitler and other Nazi elites, Karl begins to wonder where his hero’s sympathies truly lie. Can Karl balance his dream of boxing greatness with his obligation to keep his family out of harm’s way?

Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown is $1.99 at some vendors! This is an adorable, illustrated book that imagines what Darth Vader would have been like as a responsible dad. Reviews on Goodreads mention that this book isn’t just for kids, but for Star Wars fans too! However, it’s probably not for readers who aren’t familiar with the movies since this is full of references.
What if Darth Vader took an active role in raising his son? What if “Luke, I am your father” was just a stern admonishment from an annoyed dad? In this hilarious and sweet comic reimagining, Darth Vader is a dad like any other—except with all the baggage of being the Dark Lord of the Sith. Celebrated artist Jeffrey Brown’s delightful illustrations give classic Star Wars® moments a fresh twist, presenting the trials and joys of parenting through the lens of a galaxy far, far away. Life lessons include lightsaber batting practice, using the Force to raid the cookie jar, Take Your Child to Work Day on the Death Star (“Er, he looks just like you, Lord Vader!”), and the special bond shared between any father and son.

These are all great. I have a super-avid tween/elementary girl reader, and she LOVED Ivy + Bean in when she was younger. Cinder is a favorite now (along with all things Rick Riordian and a huge list of other works). She’s about to start The Book Thief, so thank you again for another suggestion! Another Nazi-era book she enjoyed is Judith Kerr’s memoir When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, which works for ages 8+, I think.
We both recommend murder-mysteries by Robin Stevens, who only has one out in the U.S. (US title is Murder is Bad Manners, UK title is Murder Most Unladylike), but 3 of that series are available now in the UK.
We also give the Darth Vader and… series of books out to adult Star Wars fans as fun holiday gifts as well.
We love IVY & BEAN here. My daughter is actually starting to read the series to her brother.
Love Ivy and Bean books! Funny without being over the top. We’ve read them all!
