Witches, Vampires, & More in These Books on Sale!

  • Light My Fire

Light My Fire by G.A. Aiken

RECOMMENDED: Light My Fire by G.A. Aiken is $1.99! This is the seventh book in Aiken’s Dragon Kin series, which is (obviously) about dragons. The heroine is sent to assassinate the Dragon Queen and is found out. The hero, part of the Queen’s guard, is tasked with transporting the heroine back home in hopes of negotiating a truce. Some readers found the book rather light on romance, though many loved seeing characters from previous books. We featured this book when it was on sale in August and many readers commented on how much they love the series and this book in particular!

The trouble with humans is that they’re far too sensitive. Forget you put a woman in the local jail for a few months – and she takes it so personally! And yet she is the one trying to assassinate the queen. And now I’m trapped with Elina Shestakova of the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight…gods! That endless name!

But what am I to do? I am Celyn the Charming with direct orders from my queen to protect this unforgiving female.

Even more shocking, this unforgiving female is completely unimpressed by me. How is that even possible? But I know what I want and, for the moment, I want her. And I’m sure that she, like all females, will learn to adore me. How could she not when I am just so damn charming?

  • Warrior’s Woman

    Warrior’s Woman by Johanna Lindsey

Warrior’s Woman by Johanna Lindsey is $2.99! You probably can’t tell from the newer cover, but this is a scifi romance. Here’s the old cover for reference and I so wish they just would have kept it. When I mentioned this to the rest of the Smart Bitches, Redheadedgirl had this to say, “Lindsey is never quite as dirty as one might hope.” Some readers found the hero to be quite the Alphole, while fans of Lindsey loved what she did with a genre that wasn’t historical romance. Have you read this?

In the year 2139, fearless Tedra De Arr sets out to rescue her beleaguered planet Kystran from the savage rule of the evil Crad Ce Moerr.

Experienced in combat but not in love, the beautiful, untouched Amazon flies with Martha, her wise-cracking, free-thinking computer, to a world where warriors reigns supreme – and into the arms of the one man she can never hope to vanquish: the bronzed barbarian Challen Ly-San-Ter.

A magnificent creature of raw yet disciplined desires, the muscle-bound primitive succeeds where no puny Kystran male had before – igniting a raging fire within Tedra that must be extinguished before she can even think of saving her enslaved world…

  • The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires

The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires by Molly Harper

The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires by Molly Harper is $1.99! This is a paranormal romance that features a vampire hero and a heroine who is a daytime “vampire concierge.” There’s also a small town romance element to this book. Readers who are familiar with Harper love how she adds an element of humor to her romances. However, others felt the heroine was rather…boring. It has a 4-star rating on GoodReads.

Iris Scanlon, Half-Moon Hollow’s only daytime vampire concierge, knows more about the undead than she’d like. Running all their daylight errands—from letting in the plumber to picking up some chilled O neg—gives her a look at the not-so-glamorous side of vampire life. Her rules are strict; relationships with vamps are strictly business, not friendship—and certainly not anything else. But then she finds her newest client, Cal, poisoned on his kitchen floor, and only Iris can help.

Cal – who would be devastatingly sexy, if Iris allowed herself to think that way – offers Iris a hefty fee for hiding him at her place until he figures out who wants him permanently dead. Even though he’s imperious, unfriendly and doesn’t seem to understand the difference between “employee” and “servant,” Iris agrees, and finds herself breaking more and more of her own rules to help him – particularly those concerning nudity.

Turns out what her quiet little life needed was some intrigue & romance—in the form of her very own stray vampire.

  • Hex Hall

    Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

RECOMMENDED: Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins is $2.99! Now, I’m not a huge young adult reader and I can’t remember what prompted me to pick this up, but I’m so glad I did. I think I wound up giving it five stars on GoodReads too. I loved the heroine so much and the cast of supernatural creatures made the plot really entertaining. Be warned that (if I recall) this first book ends on a cliffhanger.

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It’s gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie’s estranged father-an elusive European warlock-only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus.

Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

I was in the mood for light paranormal (which can be kind of tricky to find), so I picked up & read the Molly Harper book last weekend. I really enjoyed it… it was an improvement, IMO, over “Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs,” which is set in the same universe. This looks to be the first of a new series. She fixed a lot of the things that I didn’t like in NGDHF, so I think I’ll keep going with the next book. Low angst, high humor = what I like in my paranormal romance

  2. Heather S says:

“The Lion’s Daughter” by Loretta Chase is currently free on Amazon!

  3. Lostshadows says:

I’ve read a good chunk of early Lindsey. (She was my first and I worked my way through most of her backlist before branching out.)

Warrior’s Woman is a fun read, but I tend to want to punch the hero. He’s not just an alphole, he’s a smug alphole. I do love the heroine’s meddling AI computer though.

  4. McNaughtFan says:

Has anyone else noticed that ebook sales have become less and less compelling over the past year or so? It seems like most of them nowadays are for “off-brand” authors or New Adult, and I just…I can’t stand New Adult. Or, they will discount writers I like but only 25% or less, and I really don’t want to pay more than $4 for something I don’t physically own. It adds up!

Part of it is I’m more of a traditionalist romance reader who mostly reads historical and paranormal, so most of the names I love are rarely discounted because of their popularity (Elizabeth Hoyt, Eloisa James, Sabrina Jeffries, Julia Quinn, Nalini Singh, Meljean Brooks, Kresley Cole, Linnea Sinclair).

I love to borrow ebooks from my local library, and that somewhat solves the problem, but my library has strange gaps in various series of authors I love. For instance, they don’t have the third book in the Guild Hunter series, so I can’t get any further there! And they have the new Elizabeth Hoyt, but only on audio book!

So between the lack of ebook sales and my library being stupid, I have been in a reading slump for the better part of a year. I’m super desperate now, so can anyone recommend any authors that are more frequently discounted that I can get into??

I’m sorry if this post sounds whiny, but I have just been really frustrated for awhile.

  5. L. says:

Thanks for the heads up about The Lion’s Daughter. Brace yourselves but I’ve never read a Loretta Chase before. I know she’s well loved here at SB so now I can give her a try without going, “I paid good money for this?!”

  6. Catalogermom says:

McNaughtFan, you might look on your library’s website and see if they have a place for purchase requests. The library I use had only purchased the first serial segment of Meljean Brooks’ book, The Kraken King. I contacted them and they purchased and alerted me to the fact that they were available in less than a week. I had them all checked out in a few minutes after that email. Tell them that you would like the next volumes in the series and see how they respond.

  7. McNaughtFan says:

Thanks for the tip, Catalogermom. I’ll definitely try that and see what happens.

  8. Carole says:

Thanks for the Loretta Chase heads up. Have not read this one, but love the Noirot Dressmaker series. Also loved the Molly Harper Jane Jameson and Half Moon Hollow series – clever and snicker worthy in lots of places – the series kept me entertained during my Dad’s long recuperation from Triple Bypass surgery.

  9. MMV says:

As far as I can see Amazon has the Johanna Lindsey book for $8 plus dollars. No discount

  10. @Amanda says:

@MMV: Are you outside the US? Because it’s still showing up $2.99 for the Kindle for me.

  11. MMV says:

I have an account with amazon.com and pay US$, but I buy from Canada. Good to know what they do.

    Thanks

  12. “a heroine who is a daytime ‘vampire concierge.'”

Like Jackie from What we do in the Shadows?

  13. @Amanda says:

@Dread Pirate Rachel: I love that movie!

  14. @Amanda, that’s because you have impeccable taste.
