Indecent Proposal
Indecent Proposal by Molly O’Keefe is 99c! This is a recommended contemporary romance that has shown up in the comments on the site and in a podcast interview with Rose Lerner. This is book four in the Boys of Bishop series. The book starts with a one-night stand, if that happens to be your catnip. Readers said it was a great emotional story, though some expressed difficult connecting with the characters.
With his chiseled jaw and his thick blond hair, Harrison Montgomery was born to lead. Four generations of Montgomery men have served the state of Georgia and now he’s next in line. Harrison, though, is driven to right wrongs: namely to clean up the political mess left by his father’s greed and corruption. But Harrison must first win his congressional bid, and nothing can get in his way—not even an angel who served him whiskey and gave him a shoulder to lean on and a body to love for a night. Problem is, she’s pregnant. Scandal is brewing and there is only one solution: marriage.
Damage control? Ryan Kaminski can’t believe that a cold, calculating political animal now inhabits the body of the emotionally vulnerable stranger who’d given her the most unforgettable night of her life. Really, she doesn’t want anything from Harrison, except to be left alone to have her baby in peace. But Ryan is broke, jobless, and essentially blackmailed by Harrison’s desperate family to accept this crazy marriage deal. For two years, she will have to act the role of caring, supportive wife. But what is Ryan supposed to do when she realizes that, deep in her heart, she’s falling in love.

I Must Say
I Must Say by Martin Short is $1.99! This book was mentioned by Sarah back in May’s Whatcha Reading, and seemed to really enjoy the audiobook, which is also narrated by Short. A lot of the Goodreads reviews seem to echo that same statement – the audio version is way better. It’s also recommended for fans of Short, though if you don’t really like the guy, his sense of humor might wear on you.
In this engagingly witty, wise, and heartfelt memoir, Martin Short tells the tale of how a showbiz obsessed kid from Canada transformed himself into one of Hollywood’s favorite funnymen, known to his famous peers as the “comedian’s comedian.”
Short takes the reader on a rich, hilarious, and occasionally heartbreaking ride through his life and times, from his early years in Toronto as a member of the fabled improvisational troupe Second City to the all-American comic big time of Saturday Night Live, and from memorable roles in such movies as ¡Three Amigos! and Father of the Bride to Broadway stardom in Fame Becomes Me and the Tony-winning Little Me.
He reveals how he created his most indelible comedic characters, among them the manic man-child Ed Grimley, the slimy corporate lawyer Nathan Thurm, and the bizarrely insensitive interviewer Jiminy Glick. Throughout, Short freely shares the spotlight with friends, colleagues, and collaborators, among them Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Gilda Radner, Mel Brooks, Nora Ephron, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Paul Shaffer, and David Letterman.
But there is another side to Short’s life that he has long kept private. He lost his eldest brother and both parents by the time he turned twenty, and, more recently, he lost his wife of thirty years to cancer. In I Must Say,Short talks for the first time about the pain that these losses inflicted and the upbeat life philosophy that has kept him resilient and carried him through.
In the grand tradition of comedy legends, Martin Short offers a show-business memoir densely populated with boldface names and rife with retellable tales: a hugely entertaining yet surprisingly moving self-portrait that will keep you laughing—and crying—from the first page to the last.

A Woman Entangled
A Woman Entangled by Cecilia Grant is 99c! This is a historical romance with a friends-to-lovers plot. It’s also the third book in the Blackshear Family series. Many readers loved Grant’s writing, though found the story to be slow-moving at times. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads. Have you read this one?
An ambitious beauty seeking a spot among the elite is thwarted by a most disruptive gentleman in Cecilia Grant’s witty, elegant, and exquisitely sensual novel.
Kate Westbrook has dreams far bigger than romance. Love won’t get her into London’s most consequential parties, nor prevent her sisters from being snubbed and looked down upon—all because their besotted father unadvisedly married an actress. But a noble husband for Kate would deliver a future most suited to the granddaughter of an earl. Armed with ingenuity, breathtaking beauty, and the help of an idle aunt with connections, Kate is poised to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, a familiar face—albeit a maddeningly handsome one—appears bent on upsetting her scheme.
Implored by Kate’s worried father to fend off the rogues eager to exploit his daughter’s charms, Nick Blackshear has set aside the torch he’s carried for Kate in order to do right by his friend. Anyway, she made quite clear that his feelings were not returned—though policing her won’t abate Nick’s desire. Reckless passion leads to love’s awakening, but time is running out. Kate must see for herself that the charms of high society are nothing compared to the infinite sweet pleasures demanded by the heart.

Stirring Up Trouble
Stirring Up Trouble by Kimberly Kincaid is $1.99! This is the fourth book in the Pine Mountain contemporary romance series, and we’ve featured previous books in the series in the past when they’ve been on sale. Several readers loved how Kincaid created a real, believable, and understandable romance. However, some felt like it was your typical small town romance. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.
Looking for inspiration…
Sloane Russo’s turned a decade of crazy jobs and whimsical travel into a career writing steamy novels set in exotic places. Trouble is, Sloane’s flat broke now—and she can’t channel sun-drenched beaches in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The only fast cash in town comes with some seriously distracting temptation: Gavin Carmichael, hot, handsome and oh-so-hard-headed.
Gavin isn’t the impulsive Don Juan of Sloane’s novels. He’s raising his thirteen-year-old half-sister, and he’s pretty sure he’s supposed to act like he’s never heard of fun. Sloane is way too sexy and irresponsible to be his idea of a good tutor for Bree, but the unpredictable anti-nanny may be irresistible as well…

The Chocolate Rose
RECOMMENDED: The Chocolate Rose is FREE! Sarah read this one while she was in Australia, and she said, “While it wasn’t as strong in the character development as the other books I’ve enjoyed, and the timeline is very short, the sense of place is just as strong – this time in Provence, not Paris. This is a twist on the ‘visiting revenge on the offspring of one’s nemesis’ trope, and in this story, it totally worked for me.”
Her father’s worst enemy…
Top chef Gabriel Delange never forgave his old nemesis Pierre Manon for all the other chef had cost him.
One stolen rose…
And he most certainly couldn’t stand the sight of his own most famous dessert, the legendary Rose, claimed as Pierre’s own on the cover of his new cookbook.
A substitute victim…
But even Gabriel could hardly go through with a lawsuit when he learned the older chef had just had a stroke. Especially not when Pierre had one very cute daughter willing to be Gabriel’s victim instead.
Jolie Manon…
As a child, Jo had seen her family torn apart by her top chef father’s obsession with his work. She had given years of her own adult life to trying to pull him out of depression, after he lost a star. Now a food writer, she might be fascinated with a chef’s work, but she knew how to guard her heart. She would never allow another chef into her life.
Unless he blackmailed her into it…
Welcome to the heat and sun of Provence, where jasmine and roses climb up old colored walls, where fountains play in ancient stone villages, and where even a beast can prove he is a prince at heart…

So, I one clicked the Molly O’Keefe without scrolling any further down the post. I know I have that not buying books I’ve already read policy, but MOLLY O’KEEFE FOR .99. Exceptions must be made. Plus there’s this:
“It wanted him. Her stupid heart. Her stupid body – both wanted him. Thank God her brain knew better and was driving the ship.
I am my own damn Prince Charming.”
Love, love, LOVE this writer!!!
Is it wrong that the first thing I thought of when I read “The Chocolate Rose” is that it sounds like a bad euphemism??
@Mary:
Nope. Not at all, and not just you.
I won an ARC of Cecelia Grant’s first book, “A Lady Awakened”, some years back and really liked how authentic it felt – the writing style felt like Jane Austen in formality. I also loved the heroine. I think I need to check this out.
@SB Sarah
Phew, it feels like a homecoming being around other like-minded romancealistas! (Romancetarians?? [A guy I dated once referred to himself as a vaginatarian. Needless to say, he got *major* points for that.])
@Mary Star:
Ooooooooh. Romancatarians! Romancealistas! I like these words! And welcome! You’re definitely among friends fluent in all things romance here. Including euphemisms. (ESPECIALLY euphemisms!)
