This month there have been some truly outstanding deals on recommended romances, so if you’re traveling this month like so many other people in the northern hemisphere, you’ve got great discounts awaiting you as you stock your e-reader.
I remember, years ago, packing two suitcases for a weeklong cruise. One was clothes, and one was books, and I STILL ran out of books. So let’s take a look at some still-going and brand new deals in historicals so we can all pack, I mean, stock up.
His Mistress by Morning

His Mistress by Morning by Elizabeth Boyle is $2.99 right now. This is book 1 of the Marlowe series and has a 3.7-star average on GoodReads. This is a historical with a bit of magic – there’s a magical ring that allows the heroine’s wish to come true for a good portion of the book. Readers who liked it really enjoyed how the heroine grew and evolved during the story.
When Charlotte Wilmont, an awkward and all–too proper spinster, inherits an old ring, she hasn’t any idea of the power that she now wears on her finger. The ancient ring grants each bearer one wish, and unwittingly, Charlotte wishes that the man of her dreams, Sebastian Marlowe, Viscount Trent, loved her. The next morning she awakens to finds herself in a bed, naked, with none other than Sebastian.
She’s gotten her wish, for she is the woman he loves, but there’s one small hitch, she’s his mistress. Adding to her shock, Charlotte finds that the world she once knew is all turned around and now she’s the most sought after courtesan in London. As she discovers her “Lottie” alter–ego, she also finds that Sebastian’s love can come at a high price. If she keeps her wish, she’ll ruin his chance to make a good marriage and save his family from financial ruin, but if she disavows it, she’ll lose the only man she’ll ever love.

RECOMMENDED: Season for Scandal by Theresa Romain is still $1.99 at Amazon. Romain writes wonderful historicals, full of complex, fascinating people and acutely touching details. And you totally want to read about the holidays, right? It’s hot right now for many of us!
RedHeadedGirl reviewed this book and gave it an A+, and said, “As someone who also has difficulty relationshipping, I really, really liked this. There are a lot of well-drawn side characters, and an entertainingly evil bad guy, and (quelle surprise) actual learning. I wasn’t even 1/4 done before I was emailing Sarah going “WE NEED EVERYONE TO READ THIS” because I was getting super emotional over everybody and everything. Read the book! You’ll be happy you did. “
Jane Tindall has never had money of her own or exceptional beauty. Her gifts are more subtle: a mind like an abacus, a talent for play-acting–and a daring taste for gambling. But all the daring in the world can’t help with the cards fixed against her. And when Edmund Ware, Baron Kirkpatrick, unwittingly spoils her chance to win a fortune, her reputation is ruined too. Or so she thinks, until he suggests a surprising mode of escape: a hasty marriage. To him. On the surface, their wedding would satisfy all the demands of proper society, but as the Yuletide approaches, secrets and scandals turn this proper marriage into a very improper affair.

Diary of an Accidental Wallflower by Jennifer McQuiston is still $1.99. This is the first book in McQuiston’s new series, Seduction Diaries, and it has a 3.92-star average on GoodReads.
Readers who enjoyed it loved that the hero was of a lower social class than the heroine, but wasn’t hung up on his own worthiness. He’s a doctor, and she sprains her ankle right before the season starts. Several readers also describe McQuiston’s books as their new favorite comfort reads – now that’s a huge compliment! Plus, McQuiston was a guest on the podcast late last year, and her episode is one of the most popular in the archives.
The first irresistible installment in New York Times bestselling author Jennifer McQuiston’s Seduction Diaries series proves that some secrets are too delicious to hide.
Pretty and popular, Miss Clare Westmore knows exactly what (or rather, who) she wants: the next Duke of Harrington. But when she twists her ankle on the eve of the Season’s most touted event, Clare is left standing in the wallflower line watching her best friend dance away with her duke.
Dr. Daniel Merial is tempted to deliver more than a diagnosis to London’s most unlikely wallflower, but he doesn’t have time for distractions, even one so delectable. Besides, she’s clearly got her sights on more promising prey. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?
All Clare wants to do is return to the dance floor. But as her former friends try to knock her permanently out of place, she realizes with horror she is falling for her doctor instead of her duke. When her ankle finally heals and she faces her old life again, will she throw herself back into the game?
Or will her time in the wallflower line have given her a glimpse of who she was really meant to be?

RECOMMENDED: The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan is still 99c. Pretty much anyone I’ve heard talk about Milan’s books says, “Just read them all, trust me.” I concur.
Redheadedgirl and Carrie did a joint review of this title and they gave it an A:
Both Redheadedgirl and I give this book ALL THE A’s. We laughed, we cried, we were inspired and frustrated.
I may have swooned a little.
Redheadedgirl spent her Friday emailing the other Smart Bitches reviewers and telling us “HURRY UP AND READ THE BOOK I NEED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT”.
An idealistic suffragette…

There are some good books in this sale. I liked Season for Scandal, except I wanted the hero to pull his head out of his ass way earlier than he did. Also, there was only one thing I didn’t like about Diary of an Accidental Wallflower, but it’s a big one. A lot of the plot hinged on women being horrible to each other, and even the female characters who weren’t manipulative nightmares spent most of the book putting each other down in various ways. It never did fall into the “all women other than the heroine are Slutty McWhoretrollops” trope, but I didn’t love how backstabby they all were (even, occasionally, the heroine).
Not romance or historical, but Terry Pratchett’s Wee Free Men is on sale for $1.99.
Agreed with Dread Pirate Rachel. I liked the beginning and ending of Season for Scandal, but overall it just left me feeling down. But that’s my personal opinion–I find the “emotionless and rote sex in a marriage with one-sided affection” romance plots depressing, even if I know it’ll all work out in the end. I liked Diary of an Accidental Wallflower more, even with a little crazysauce.
