Today is “Prime Day” on Amazon, and there were many ads promising great deals. For me, it’s a big ol’ “meh,” because many of the things I was most interested in were sold out before 8am ET, and I’m not super excited about what’s left.
There are, however, Kindle device deals, so if you’ve been thinking of getting one, here are the sales:
- The 6″ Kindle Touchscreen with Wifi and Special Offers (not the Paperwhite) is $30 off at $49 today only.
- The Fire HD 7, with a 7″ HD Display, Wi-Fi and Special Offers, is $60 off at $79 today.
- RECOMMENDED: The Kindle Fire TV Stick, which puts prime instant video and streaming on your tv, is also on sale: $15 off drops the price to $24.00. We have two of these, and we really like them, especially since the remote that comes with it is very easy to use.Normally the Fire Stick is $40, and it was on sale last fall as a preorder for $20. $24 is a pretty good deal, especially if you don’t have a smart tv with apps on board, and would like to watch Amazon streaming on your television.
12:00PM EST Sales
I’m posting these sales preemptively so people can snap them up ASAP. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t list the sale price beforehand. (Update: Prices!)
- RECOMMENDED: Little Humans by Brandon Stanton. I loved Humans of New York, and this is essentially the same thing but with super cute children. (48% off at $9.29)
- Choose Your Own Autobiography by Neil Patrick Harris (51% off at $12.87)
- Divergent Series Complete Boxed Set by Veronica Roth (72% off at $15.58 – WOW!)
These deals will also probably expire or sell out soon, though. Are there any other Prime Day sales that you were excited about? Please let us know in the comments!
Worth the Risk

Worth the Risk by Claudia Connor is 99c! This is the second book in the McKinney Brothers contemporary romance series. The first book, Worth the Fall ( A | BN | K | G | AB ), has been a huge hit with the Bitchery in the past. These books are often emotional, and be forewarned that this particular title has a heroine who works with children who are victims of trauma. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.
Two hearts locked away . . . Hannah Walker spends her days coaching children through injury and trauma, one therapeutic horseback ride at a time. She knows all too well how violence can change a child and leave scars that never heal. It’s easy for her to relate to the kids; what isn’t easy is the thought of facing her own harrowing past.
Millionaire playboy Stephen McKinney could use a little coaching himself. Five years ago he encountered his most horrible nightmare—and the nightmare won. No matter what he achieves, nothing can make up for that awful night . . . or so he believes.
Both desperate for a second chance . . . Stephen is used to getting what he wants. And he wants Hannah. So when she turns him down, he’s intrigued. What he doesn’t know is that her secrets will lead him to a place he never wanted to go again . . . to a side of himself he’s tried to forget . . . a side that would scare Hannah away from ever loving him. Now his only chance to win her trust is to bare his soul, risking everything he tried so hard to protect.

The Spider by Jennifer Estep is $1.99! This is the tenth book in the long-running Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. The thirteenth book is due out later this month. In this installment, readers finally get the origin story of the series’ heroine. Though the events in the book are supposed to be a prequel, I’m unsure if this can be read out of order. Maybe the Bitchery can help.
How did I end up in a career where I always have blood on my hands? Well, let me tell you a story about an assassin who thought she could do no wrong. . . .
Ten years ago. A blistering hot August night. I remember like it was yesterday. The night I, Gin Blanco, truly became the Spider. Killing people is what I do best, especially now that I’ve honed my Ice and Stone magic. But back then, I had yet to learn one very important rule: arrogance will get you, every single time.
This particular job seemed simple: murder a crooked building contractor with ties to ruthless Fire elemental Mab Monroe. My mentor, Fletcher Lane, had some misgivings, but I was certain that I had the situation under control . . . right up until I exposed my weaknesses to a merciless opponent who exploited every single one of them. There’s a reason assassins aren’t supposed to feel anything. Luckily, a knife to the heart can fix that problem, especially when I’m the one wielding it. . . .

My Highland Lover by Maeve Greyson is 99c! This is a historical time travel romance and is the first in the Highland Hearts series. Readers loved how the author handled the actual concept of time traveling, though some found the hero and heroine’s interactions a little silly at times. Have you read this one?
Maeve Greyson unleashes a thrilling tale of magic and desire as a feisty Southern gal falls into the arms of a rough-hewn Highland chieftain.
As the proprietor of a homeopathic store in rural Kentucky, Trulie Sinclair knows that her neighbors think she’s strange—but they have no idea how strange she really is. Trulie was born in Scotland in the thirteenth century to a line of time-traveling Highlanders. When Trulie’s grandmother convinces her to return to their homeland,Trulie jumps back in time, right onto the powerful chest of Gray MacKenna. Just as his steely good looks send ripples through her body, their fierce attraction will send ripples through the ages.
After his parents murdered, Gray is consumed by thoughts of revenge. As the new chieftain of the MacKenna clan, he has reason to believe that there’s a traitor in his midst, and nothing—not even the bonny lass who suddenly drops from the sky—can distract him from his single-minded pursuit of the culprit. But when Gray learns that this sassy beauty possesses gifts beyond the sparkle in her eye, he allows his gaze, and his heart, to linger. While he hunts for the murderer, Gray finds in Trulie a precious companion—and a timeless love.

RECOMMENDED: Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit is $2.99 at Amazon. I loved this collection of essays. The first essay is the author at this fancy academic party. She mentions her area of academia to a male attendee and he promptly begins to explain this particular academic book that deals with the same topic, not knowing the author is the one who wrote said book. Some of the essays are funny and some made me cry. But I highly recommend it and hope it gets price matched.
In her comic, scathing essay “Men Explain Things to Me,” Rebecca Solnit took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters.
She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!”
This book features that now-classic essay with six perfect complements, including an examination of the great feminist writer Virginia Woolf ’s embrace of mystery, of not knowing, of doubt and ambiguity, a highly original inquiry into marriage equality, and a terrifying survey of the scope of contemporary violence against women.

I browsed the Prime sales this morning and got the Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended edition) on Blu-Ray for $27.99. I haven’t seen any other must-buys yet, but I’ll keep checking the book sales.
I enjoyed the Elemental Assassin books up to around number 9. I think I just hit fatigue with EVERY SINGLE BOOK repeating what each character looks like, their background story, descriptions of locations, etc. Sometimes more than once in the same book. I get that it’s new-reader-friendly for those who may have picked up a random book in the series, but if you started at book one, it gets super-repetitive (and boring) super fast. I also had this sense that Gin was on her way to the heinous “Bestest, Most Powerful Queen of Everything” status that Anita Blake long ago surpassed, and I have no stomach for that.
I am also close to burn out with the Elemental Assassin series, though I am just about hanging in there (probably because I like the romance and relationship Gin has now so much). Each book has the “biggest, baddest, evil person ever – how is she going to kill them?”, and then she does and the next book comes along and it is a case of “wait, did I say the baddie last time round was the biggest and baddest? No, no, no, this one is. How is she going to kill them?”, and then she does and the next book comes out etc etc etc. It wasn’t so bad in the beginning, because the first baddie took a lot of books to kill, but now they are dropping like flies, one per book. I am finding it rather repetitive and predictable!
PrimeDay is such a bust. Was hoping to get a new Paperwhite, but the Kindle sales are limited to two models – and completely sold out hours ago. Better than Black Friday my ass.
I’m still enjoying the Elemental Assassin series, but the prequel felt like fan service…a lot of coincidences that play out in the later stories.
It does seem that each big bad is bigger and badder and I think that the story has to end somewhere…
Kindle Unlimited is on sale for prepaid lengths of 6 months, 12 months or 2 years. There’s no refund if you cancel a prepaid but if you think you’re going to use it, it seems a good deal.
I am less than dazzled with Prime Day. All three items I tried to buy were either sold out or “waitlisted”. I can’t tell if I made it onto the waitlist or not.
Of course, I managed to find somewhere else to buy the item I was in the market for: Costco. AND free shipping.
Am I the only one that’s getting annoyed with Amazon’s recent efforts to pimp Prime? I guess this one isn’t as bad as the “great price if you have Prime, otherwise we literally refuse to sell it to you” items.
Yeah the Prime offerings have kinda blown and the prices really aren’t that great. I did buy some sunscreen and a specialty ice cube tray but nothing I had on my list of stuff I needed has come up so far, so :p
My wallet is happy that the much-anticipated Prime Day was a bust. I bought nothing.
I’m still hanging in there but I, too, have Elemental Assassin fatigue and have been skimming some of the later books. As noted, they’re incredibly repetitive (Gin’s knives, Owen’s violet eyes, Sophia’s goth clothes, the food, etc., etc.). Gin’s always beating herself up and taking the blame even when it’s misplaced. And the way some of her friends/loved ones have treated her–I really wanted her to say, “Eff this, I’m out of here” more than once. For a badass assassin, she’s such a freaking doormat. And, really, she’s the worst *secret* assassin ever. How she was able to keep her identity a secret for so many years, well, it’s only because the author said so not because it was remotely feasible.
That said, there’s been enough improvement recently that I’ll still probably read The Spider’s Trap when it comes out.
As for The Spider, it was a DNF for me, primarily because of the repetition. But it’s a prequel so maybe that would make it an OK book to start with.
Please pardon the non sequitur, but the cover of My Highland Lover made me laugh out loud. Not in a mean way, I swear.
Had to take a(nother?) look at the cover of My Highland Lover after Robin’s comment. It’s like a barrel cuddling a plank of wood wrapped in red! Either he is REALLY pumped up or she is REALLY skinny, or both! Or is that jealousy talking? And is it just me imagining him saying “I vant to suck your blooooood”… ?
