Historicals Galore from Victoria Alexander & Tessa Dare

  • Romancing the Duke

Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare

RECOMMENDED: Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare is $2.99! This is the first book in the Castles Ever After historical romance series and it won a RITA this past week – yay! It currently has 4-star rating on GR. Sarah reviewed it and gave it a B+:

I think this is a truly unique historical that will appeal to readers who aren’t often historical fans. This story captures both a distant time period, and the present day, reflecting it in the characters – with a story and a parallel set of references beside it that grow together until the meaning of both is intertwined and layered into something I haven’t read before. This is a romance that is also a little bit about the community around romance, and all the many, many people who believe in it and have their fondness for it in common.

In the first in Tessa Dare’s captivating Castles Ever After series, a mysterious fortress is the setting for an unlikely love . . .

As the daughter of a famed author, Isolde Ophelia Goodnight grew up on tales of brave knights and fair maidens. She never doubted romance would be in her future, too. The storybooks offered endless possibilities.

And as she grew older, Izzy crossed them off. One by one by one.

    Ugly duckling turned swan?
    Abducted by handsome highwayman?
Rescued from drudgery by charming prince?

    No, no, and… Heh.

Now Izzy’s given up yearning for romance. She’ll settle for a roof over her head. What fairy tales are left over for an impoverished twenty-six year-old woman who’s never even been kissed?

    This one.

  • Say Yes to the Marquess

Say Yes to the Marquess by Tessa Dare

RECOMMENDED: Say Yes to the Marquessby Tessa Dare is $3.99 right now – perfect if you like historical romance with humor and emotional depth. Elyse reviewed this book and gave it a B+, saying she loved the sharp, business-minded heroine, and the portrayal of the hero.

Your presence is requested at romantic Twill Castle for the wedding of Miss Clio Whitmore and … and …?

After eight years of waiting for Piers Brandon, the wandering Marquess of Granville, to set a wedding date, Clio Whitmore has had enough. She’s inherited a castle, scraped
together some pride, and made plans to break her engagement.

Not if Rafe Brandon can help it. A ruthless prizefighter and notorious rake, Rafe is determined that Clio will marry his brother–even if he has to plan the dratted wedding himself.

So how does a hardened fighter cure a reluctant bride’s cold feet?

    • He starts with flowers. A wedding can’t have too many flowers. Or harps. Or cakes.
    • He lets her know she’ll make a beautiful, desirable bride–and tries not to picture her as his.
    • He doesn’t kiss her.
    • If he kisses her, he definitely doesn’t kiss her again.
    • When all else fails, he puts her in a stunning gown. And vows not to be nearby when the gown comes off.
    • And no matter what–he doesn’t fall in disastrous, hopeless love with the one woman he can never call his own.

  • The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride

The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride by Victoria Alexander

The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride by Victoria Alexander is $1.99 right now. This is book 3 in the Millworth Manor series, and has a 3.6-star average. Readers who liked it really enjoyed the Victorian setting, but some found the conflict to be rather thin.

The bride and groom request the presence of the bride’s sister, Delilah, proper widowed Lady Hargate, and Samuel Russell, groom’s friend, slightly improper bachelor, at their upcoming wedding. Lady Hargate and Mr Russell pretend to forget an unforgettable night in New York City. The lady plans to avoid love. The gentleman plans to change her mind.

  • The Shocking Secret of a Guest at the Wedding

The Shocking Secret of a Guest at the Wedding by Victoria Alexander

The Shocking Secret of a Guest at the Wedding by Victoria Alexander is $1.99. This historical has a 3.6-star average, and was also mentioned by Rachel of Northshire Bookstores in a recent edition of Locally Sourced Romance. Some readers loved the back and forth banter between the hero and heroine, while others felt the characterization was a bit inconsistent at times. The book also includes a fake engagement and I have met many people for whom that is their most potent catnip.

The bride and groom cordially request your presence for a wedding at Millworth Manor…

Guests will include Jackson Quincy Graham Channing, New York City banker, and Lady Theodosia “Teddy” Winslow, wedding planner to the finest families in England.

Introductions shall be followed by light conversation, dancing, flirtation, arguing, reconciliation, and an impulsive kiss that both parties are quite certain they will never repeat.

    Until they do.

A mutually beneficial fake engagement will be accompanied by all manner of very real complications, scandalous revelations, nefarious schemes, and one inescapable conclusion:

That true love–unlike the perfect wedding–is impossible to plan…

  1. Both of the Tessa Dare books are fantastic. I haven’t read either of the Victoria Alexander books, but I really enjoyed the first book in that series, What Happens at Christmas. It was lighthearted and funny, and the angst was nice and low-key. Very much a feel-good book. And it was one of the few holiday-themed romances I’ve found that didn’t bludgeon me over the head with The Magic of Christmas™. I bought both in the hopes that they live up to the first.
