Secrets of a Summer Night

ALAS – no longer on sale. I’m so sorry, y’all!
RECOMMENDED: Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas is $1.99 – and check out the new cover! How pretty is that?
This is the first book in the Wallflower Quartet, and it’s wonderful. It has a 4+ star average – and Elyse reviewed this book recently, too. She gave it an A-, saying, “Most of the story takes place at a house party in the country where Annabelle is trying to score a titled husband (along with a feral pack of other unmarried women). Annabelle keeps running into Simon Hunt, the son of a butcher who is a self-made man and wealthy investor. Simon is all kinds of hot–he’s basically sex in riding boots. Simon and Annabelle are drawn to each other–well, their naughty bits are–but it’s a lot of “I hate you, I can’t stand you, kiss me you fool!”
Four young ladies enter London society with one common goal: they must use their feminine wit and wiles to find a husband. So a daring husband-hunting scheme is born.
Annabelle Peyton, determined to save her family from disaster, decides to use her beauty and wit to tempt a suitable nobleman into making an offer of marriage. But Annabelle’s most intriguing—and persistent—admirer, wealthy, powerful Simon Hunt, has made it clear that while he will introduce her to irresistible pleasure he will not offer marriage. Annabelle is determined to resist his unthinkable proposition . . . but it is impossible in the face of such skillful seduction.
Her friends, looking to help, conspire to entice a more suitable gentleman to offer for Annabelle, for only then will she be safe from Simon—and her own longings. But on one summer night, Annabelle succumbs to Simon’s passionate embrace and tempting kisses . . . and she discovers that love is the most dangerous game of all.

Diary of an Accidental Wallflower by Jennifer McQuiston is .99 right now. This is the first book in McQuiston’s new series, Seduction Diaries, and it has a 3.92-star average on GoodReads. Readers who enjoyed it loved that the hero was of a lower station than the heroine, but wasn’t hung up on his own worthiness. He’s a doctor, and she sprains her ankle right before the season starts. Several readers also describe McQuiston’s books as their new favorite comfort reads – now that’s a terrific compliment!
The first irresistible installment in New York Times bestselling author Jennifer McQuiston’s Seduction Diaries series proves that some secrets are too delicious to hide.
Pretty and popular, Miss Clare Westmore knows exactly what (or rather, who) she wants: the next Duke of Harrington. But when she twists her ankle on the eve of the Season’s most touted event, Clare is left standing in the wallflower line watching her best friend dance away with her duke.
Dr. Daniel Merial is tempted to deliver more than a diagnosis to London’s most unlikely wallflower, but he doesn’t have time for distractions, even one so delectable. Besides, she’s clearly got her sights on more promising prey. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?
All Clare wants to do is return to the dance floor. But as her former friends try to knock her permanently out of place, she realizes with horror she is falling for her doctor instead of her duke. When her ankle finally heals and she faces her old life again, will she throw herself back into the game?
Or will her time in the wallflower line have given her a glimpse of who she was really meant to be?

Deception of a Highlander by Madeline Martin is $2.99. This book has a 4+ star average, and readers who liked it say it has a little of everything: intrigue, adventure, romance, a heroine who is a spy, and a hero who is a caretaking alpha.
Scottish Romance doesn’t get much steamier—or more dangerous—than a spy hunting her quarry, then losing her heart to him instead.
To pay a seemingly impossible debt, Mariel Brandon has become a spy for Aaron, one of England’s deadliest minds. Aaron’s latest mission for the sharp-witted and daring Mariel is to find two people in a heavily fortified castle on the Isle of Skye, a castle headed by the clan MacDonald and the powerful Kieran. Mariel is to seduce Kieran and get him to take her to Skye. If she succeeds, Aaron promises to let Mariel’s young brother go, and to free both of them from their debt. If she fails, her brother will die.
What she doesn’t count on is craving Kieran MacDonald almost immediately upon meeting him. Now Mariel must keep a secret from Kieran—one that could get them both killed—as she tries to form a plan that will save her brother, get her out from under Aaron’s thumb once and for all, and keep her in Kieran’s strong arms forever.

The Shopkeeper’s Daughter by Lily Baxter is .99 right now. This book was one of my Whatcha Reading? mentions, and I did finish it shortly after that post. Here’s a micro-micro-review. As a romance, it’s not awesome – I never fully bought the hero or his redemption, but I loved the heroine, and the WWII setting, especially the tension and fear and the warmth of communities working together to try to keep everyone safe. The book has some pacing issues, too: it starts out with a great furious pace, then jumps ahead some months – which is jarring. But if you’re looking for a unique piece of historical fiction, this might be an absorbing, though sometimes frustrating, read.
In World War II–torn England, a young woman must fight to keep her family together, whatever the cost.
Ginnie Travis has been working in her father’s shop for the past five years, trying to keep it afloat. When scandal rocks her family just as relentless Nazi raids threaten their very lives, Ginnie and her sister are forced to flee and stay with their aunt in the North of England. The last thing she expects to find in the quiet countryside is love, especially with an American soldier. A soldier who has secrets of his own.
Tragedy strikes, the horror of war rages on, and Ginnie will do whatever she must to protect everything she holds dear.

Secrets of a Summer Night is coming up as $7.99.
The Shopkeeper’s Daughter was great historical fiction and I thought Lily’s relationship with her American GI (whose name completely escapes me as I type this) was more realistic. I would so recommend it.
Kleypas’ book is so tempting, because I want another historical romance series to sink into…
Oh lordy, they changed the cover of SoaSN. I was all “yay, a new-to-me Kleypas!” and Amazon was all “you already own the book, dummy!” Thank you, Amazon. Sincerely.
I actually just finished that Jennifer McQuiston yesterday. Her books really make good comfort reads, and “Summer is for Lovers” is perfect this time of year. I liked the heroine, I liked the hero, they had excellent chemistry and it was just FUN. I do have to wonder, though, how on earth these “gently bred ladies” of historicals can just run off and spend the night with the hero and NOBODY IN THE HOUSE NOTICES THEY’RE GONE. I mean, she waltzes in, all ripe from 4 hours of walking, a storm, and a night of smexy times, but nobody thinks to comment on her appearance? She slept in some of her clothes. Her hair. NONE of this is a giveaway that some shenanigans have taken place? Gah.
Secrets of a Summer Night is showing as $7.99 for me too =(
And Then He Kissed Her by Laura Lee Guhrke is 1.99 $.
Yeah, SoaSN is $7.99 for me as well. Too bad.
I’m so sorry the sale ended, y’all. My bad. 🙁
I just checked Amazon and SOASN is showing at $1.99 (again). I think they’re messing with you, Sarah.
I love the new cover, but I already own it in paper and digital.
@Susan
They’re messing with someone because it’s still showing at $7.99 for me 🙁
“Sex in riding boots.”
Which a man should be if he possibly can. LoL
