It Started with a Scandal

It Started With a Scandal by Julie Anne Long is $1.99. This is book 10 in the Pennyroyal Green series, which is a superb historical series that mixes small town dynamics with the Regency – and two feuding families that like to score points off one another. And a lot of tension. And really gorgeous writing. (I really like this series).
This book came out in March of this year, so I think this is the first time it’s been on sale. It has a 4+ star average on GR, too. If you’ve been waiting, here’s your chance!
Lord Philippe Lavay once took to the high seas armed with charm as lethal as his sword and a stone-cold conviction: he’ll restore his family’s fortune and honor, no matter the cost. Victory is at last within reach–when a brutal attack snatches it from his grasp and lands him in Pennyroyal Green.
An afternoon of bliss brings a cascade of consequences for Elise Fountain. Shunned by her family and ousted from a job she loves, survival means a plummet down the social ladder to a position no woman has yet been able to keep: housekeeper to a frighteningly formidable prince.
The bold and gentle Elise sees past his battered body into Philippe’s barricaded heart…and her innate sensuality ignites his blood. Now a man who thought he could never love and a woman who thought she would never again trust must fight an incendiary passion that could be the ruin of them both.

RECOMMENDED: The Duchess War by Courtney Milan is currently free. This is the first book in the Brothers Sinister series, and Carrie reviewed it and gave it an A+, saying, “The Duchess War is lovely – smart, touching, funny, sexy, and dizzyingly romantic. Read it right away – yes, now. Everything on your to-do list can wait, believe me.”
Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly–so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don’t get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.
But that is precisely what she gets.
Because Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont, is not fooled. When Minnie figures out what he’s up to, he realizes there is more to her than her spectacles and her quiet ways. And he’s determined to lay her every secret bare before she can discover his. But this time, one shy miss may prove to be more than his match…

RECOMMENDED: Texas Destiny by Lorraine Heath is $3.49 at most vendors. Jessie, who is a publicist at Avon and who frequently works with Heath, is a huge fan of this book, and has been since forever. she wrote A Love Letter to Texas Destiny a few years ago, and said, “There’s so much angst and heartache and tenderness and joy in this book, I’m overwhelmed with emotions every time I read it (which is maybe once or twice a year for the past ten years). Houston, a gentle man whose only desire is to own a small plot of land, breed horses, and be left alone, has always been cast in the shadow of his ambitious older brother, and since getting his wounds in the war, he has become even more withdrawn. He has no idea why a woman as sweet and beautiful as Amelia would love him….”
I think I hear catnip alarms. Loud ones!
Arriving on the Fort Worth train, Miss Amelia Carson, mail-order bride, had never met Dallas Leigh, the Texan she promised to marry. The tall cowboy at the station wasn’t Dallas. He was Houston, Dallas’s brother, sent to escort her on the rugged three-week trek to the ranch where Dallas waited. Brought up in war-ravaged Georgia, Amelia thought Dallas’s letters made Texas sound like heaven, a place for her dreams to grow with the right man beside her.
And his only love…
By all appearances, Houston Leigh would hardly be considered the “right man.” The war he survived had scarred him inside and out, and he was little competition for his handsome brother. But from the moment Houston met Amelia, he knew she possessed the courage this wild land needed. She had eyes that could see past his wounded face to his soul. And he would fight any man—except his brother—for her heart. Now he and Amelia were riding down dangerous trails, sleeping under the stars, and God help them, they were falling in love.

As an Earl Desires by Lorraine Heath is $2.99. This is book 1 in the Lost Lords series, and it has a 3.7-star average. It follows the last book in a previous series, Love with a Scandalous Lord, but can be read as a standalone. The hero is the new Earl of Sachse, and the heroine is the previous earl’s widow.
A Matter of Temptation, which is book 2 in this series, is $1.99, ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) should you be wishing to read both!
Camilla Hutchenson, countess, sponsor, darling of the ton, has reached a staggering level of social power. But one man has managed to distract her attention from her schedule of charity endeavours and teas – and not just because he holds the deed to her estate.
The man in question, Archibald Warner, is the new Earl of Sachse. Though at first meeting he suspects his new ward of being nothing more than a social bit of fluff, the more time passes, the more he finds himself drawn to her. But there is something she is hiding from him, and she hesitates to show him her real heart, even though she wishes she could learn to trust him with it. For somehow she knows…if only she can give him the chance, he will teach her everything she could hope to learn about love.

Several of Loretta Chase’s books are on sale, too! The first two books in the Dressmakers trilogy, “Your Scandalous Ways”, and “Don’t Tempt Me”! They run $1.99 to $2.99.
Hell, yes, Texas Destiny! And not only all that but also because of the way their long and eventful trip from the train station to the ranch is rendered. It is so vivid, so damn good, I was transported right there.
I serendipitously bought It Started With a Scandal on sale last night desperate for something to read. Finished it this morning. Hot dog, it’s good!
As Margarita said, “Hell, yes, Texas Destiny!” I read it over the weekend. Wonderful road trip story and the tension between Houston and Amelia … sigh.

Texas Destiny is a favorite of mine and I liked Texas Glory just a shade better, but they’re both fabulous. Texas Glory had me in the description, partly because I loved the heroine’s name, Cordelia McQueen, and partly because she’s the daughter of the hero’s sworn enemies and is more or less sold to the hero for water rights, and mostly because the hero is told Cordelia does not have a nose.
