Recapping June’s Best Deals So Far: Historicals

Here are some of the most popular deals on ebooks so far this month. Which have you grabbed for your happy reading pleasure?

  • It Started with a Scandal

It Started with a Scandal by Julie Anne Long

It Started With a Scandal by Julie Anne Long is still $1.99. This is book 10 in the Pennyroyal Green series, which is a superb historical series that mixes small town dynamics with the Regency – and two feuding families that like to score points off one another.

This book came out in March 2015, so I think this is the first time it’s been on sale. It has a 4+ star average on GR, too. I’ve read this series out of order and been fine, but hey, the whole series is pretty spiffy, and the previous 9 books before this on are available on Scribd!

Lord Philippe Lavay once took to the high seas armed with charm as lethal as his sword and a stone-cold conviction: he’ll restore his family’s fortune and honor, no matter the cost. Victory is at last within reach–when a brutal attack snatches it from his grasp and lands him in Pennyroyal Green.

An afternoon of bliss brings a cascade of consequences for Elise Fountain. Shunned by her family and ousted from a job she loves, survival means a plummet down the social ladder to a position no woman has yet been able to keep: housekeeper to a frighteningly formidable prince.

The bold and gentle Elise sees past his battered body into Philippe’s barricaded heart…and her innate sensuality ignites his blood. Now a man who thought he could never love and a woman who thought she would never again trust must fight an incendiary passion that could be the ruin of them both.

  • The Ashford Affair

The Ashford Affair by Lauren Willig

RECOMMENDED: The Ashford Affair by Lauren Willig is on sale for $2.99. It’s historical fiction with parallel storylines that take place in the 1990s in New York, England at the turn of the last century. I gave this book a B when I reviewed it and said, “This isn’t a romance, but it’s rich and superb written, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since I finished it. Romance readers looking for a taste of something a little different will discover a fascinating world in this book.”

As a lawyer in a large Manhattan firm, just shy of making partner, Clementine Evans has finally achieved almost everything she’s been working towards—but now she’s not sure it’s enough. Her long hours have led to a broken engagement and, suddenly single at thirty-four, she feels her messy life crumbling around her. But when the family gathers for her grandmother Addie’s ninety-ninth birthday, a relative lets slip hints about a long-buried family secret, leading Clemmie on a journey into the past that could change everything. . . .

What follows is a potent story that spans generations and continents, bringing an Out of Africa feel to a Downton Abbey cast of unforgettable characters. From the inner circles of WWI-era British society to the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the red-dirt hills of Kenya, the never-told secrets of a woman and a family unfurl.

  • Your Scandalous Ways

Your Scandalous Ways by Loretta Chase

Your Scandalous Ways by Loretta Chase is still $1.99. This is book 1 of the Fallen Women series, and features a weary and somewhat oversexed spy who is sent to retrieve some letters from a courtesan. The letters belonged to her former husband, and she has no interest in the hero – until she does. Readers who gave this book four and five star reviews said the heroine is terrific – as is the fact that the book takes place in Venice.

James Cordier is all blue blood and entirely dangerous. He’s a master of disguise, a brilliant thief, a first-class lover—all for King and Country—and, by gad, he’s so weary of it. His last mission is to “acquire” a packet of incriminating letters from one notorious woman. Then he can return to London and meet sweet-natured heiresses—not adventuresses and fallen women.

Francesca Bonnard has weathered heartbreak, scorn, and scandal. She’s independent, happy, and definitely fallen; and she’s learned that “gentlemen” are more trouble than they’re worth. She can also see that her wildly attractive new neighbor is bad news.

But as bad as James is, there are others far worse also searching for Francesca’s letters. And suddenly nothing is simple—especially the nearly incendiary chemistry between the two most jaded, sinful souls in Europe. And just as suddenly, risking everything may be worth the prize.

  • Silk is for Seduction

Silk is for Seduction by Loretta Chase

Silk is For Seduction by Loretta Chase is still $2.99. This book was nominated for a RITA® and our two RITA® Reader Challenge reviewers liked it a great deal.

Julie gave it an A-, saying, “I really enjoyed this book. Marcelline and her sisters play pre-Victorian Era hardball with their business competitors and the duke. She’s surviving in a man’s world by her wits and her determination.”

And Milena also gave it an A-, writing, “I loved Marcelline to bits. She’s a businesswoman, and her work is not just a decoration she’s ready to drop at the first twitch of a duke’s eyebrows. She loves it – all of the fabulous dress designs the Noirot sisters produce are hers – and she doesn’t want to abandon it, even in exchange for a life of luxury.”

Brilliant and ambitious dressmaker Marcelline Noirot is London’s rising star. And who better to benefit from her talent than the worst-dressed lady in the ton, the Duke of Clevedon’s intended bride?

Winning the future duchess’s patronage means prestige and fortune for Marcelline and her sisters. To get to the lady, though, Marcelline must win over Clevedon, whose standards are as high as his morals are…not.

The prize seems well worth the risk — but this time Marcelline’s met her match. Clevedon can design a seduction as irresistible as her dresses; and what begins as a flicker of desire between two of the most passionately stubborn charmers in London soon ignites into a delicious inferno…and a blazing scandal.

  1. Martha says:

    Hi
I clicked on the Scribd link and got the message that Julie Ann Long has no published content. I started noticing a chane in Scribd about a week ago where a lot of romance novels previously on the site were gone. Is anyone else having the same issues?

  2. @SB Sarah says:

That’s very odd. What country are you in?

  3. Martha says:

I live in the USA. I get the same message for all of the Harlequin a Presents authors as well as many others Robyn Carr, Lyndsay Sands …..

  4. Alexandra says:

I just finished It Started With A Scandal last night and it. Was. Fabulous.

In fact I’m currently gorging myself on this series. I’ve read What I Did for A Duke (#5), It Happened One Midnight (#8), I Kissed an Earl (#4), It Started With a Scandal (#10) and am currently halfway through How the Marquess Was Won (#6). I’m sure I’ll be done with the rest in about a week.

All of these are easily 4 star reads. Julie Anne Long is highly recommended. Pennyroyal Green is also about two families, so if family sagas are your thing this isn’t one to miss!

  5. These are all great books!! I most especially loved It Started With A Scandal. Long is such a great author of Regency style romance.
