Daughter of Smoke & Bone

RECOMMENDED: Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor is $2.99! This is a YA fantasy with some romantic elements, and it’s the first in a series. I’ve heard so many good things about this book, and several friends compared it to a fairy tale. Admittedly, it’s a tad confusing at the start, trying to get your footing in the story. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.
Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”, she speaks many languages – not all of them human – and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.
When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

The Billionaire and the Virgin by Jessica Clare is 99c! This is the first book in her Billionaires and Bridesmaids series, which debuted earlier this year. This book was also one of Elyse’s picks for February’s Hide Your Wallet. While some readers had some issues with the heroine’s personality, most like the opposites attract element of the romance. Have you read this one?
You met the six bachelors of the Billionaire Boys Club… Now it’s time to pair up some filthy-rich billionaires with lucky ladies in waiting and enjoy the spoils…
Marjorie Ivarsson is the picture of naivete. A hardworking waitress raised by her grandmother, an evening playing bingo is her sort of socialising. But when she’s invited to be a bridesmaid at her friend Bronte’s wedding, she enters a whole new world.
Whisked away to the billionaire groom’s private island, Marjorie is awe-struck by the glitz and glamour. But what dazzles her most is notorious playboy and hot-shot TV producer Robert Cannon.
After Marjorie saves Robert from drowning in the island’s turquoise lagoon, she can’t help but feel drawn to him. But she’s not the only woman intrigued, and with his wild and womanising ways, they couldn’t be more wrong for each other. With the blistering attraction between them becoming hard to ignore, and the idyllic, irresistibly romantic island as their playground – will opposites attract?

Jennifer McQuiston’s Diary of an Accidental Wallflower is $.99 for Kindle right now. I haven’t read this one, but she’s on my autobuy list due to previous awesome books and the fact that she’s a certified, real-life badass.
The Jennifer McQuiston book Dread Pirate Rachel mentioned is also $.99 at B&N NOOK store.
Smoke and Bone is VERY good. I haven’t read the sequel yet, but the first book is so rich with unique mythology you sort of want to snuggle down in with it somewhere quiet by candlelight. The main character does have a fair bit of Mary Sue in her, and the hero is likewise a little bit cookie cutter “damaged alpha”, but the world building and concepts are fantastic. Definitely recommended if you’re looking for something more different from your typical YA fantasy because it has so many unique creatures and cultures.
In hindsight, I also want to point out that rather than having “some” romantic elements, Smoke and Bone is VERY much a love story, in case that tips the scales for anyone.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is just a lovely read. I remember my brain feeling like it felt better, because the writing was just so beautiful. Get on that, folks.
Thanks for the heads up, DPR! I totally snagged that one, as well as Caroline Linden’s “All’s Fair in Love and Scandal” for $1.99!
I will also join my voice in with recommending Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Sadly, I can’t say the same for the sequel, so just stick with the first book.
