The White Queen

The White Queen by Philippa Gregory is $1.99 right now. Originally published in 2009, this novel is historical fiction focused on The War of the Roses, and the queen who was also the mother of the two princes who went missing from the Tower of London and were never found. This book has a 3.8-star average on GoodReads, and if you or someone you know likes historical fiction, this would make a lovely gift.
Brother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize, the throne, in this dazzling account of the wars of the Plantagenets. They ruled before the Tudors, and now Philippa Gregory brings them to life through the dramatic and intimate stories of the secret players: the indomitable women.
The White Queen tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville, a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition, who secretly marries the newly crowned boy king. While Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become the central figures in a famous unsolved mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the lost princes in the Tower of London.Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

A Table by the Window by Hillary Manton Lodge is $1.99. This is the first book in the Two Blue Doors series; the heroine is the heir to a set of restaurants, and when she starts with with her brother, finds a unique connection to a man she meets online who lives far from where she is. The book is tagged as “Christian romance” though the reviews on Goodreads, where it has a 4.1-star average, don’t indicate how much spirituality influences the story. Have you read this one?
The youngest heir to a French-Italian restaurant dynasty, food writer Juliette D’Alisa has spent her life negotiating her skill with words and her restaurant aspirations. When her brother Nico offers her a chance to open a restaurant together, she feels torn—does she really have what it takes? Should she risk leaving her journalism career?

The Hedge Knight by George R.R. Martin is $2.99. This is a graphic novel prequel to the Game of Thrones series, which is very little known and no one ever talks about. The graphic novel version is adapted by Ben Avery and illustrated by Mike S. Miller. It has a 4+ star average on GoodReads, and, according to Hubby, “provide a lot of fun, fill-in-the-backstory details.”
Set one hundred years before the events in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Hedge Knight graphic novel chronicles a young squire as he travels the cruel and complex path to knighthood in the Seven Kingdoms.
Shouldering his fallen master’s sword and shield, Duncan (or “Dunk”) is determined to reinvent himself as a knight in a nearby tournament. But first Dunk needs a sponsor, and that requirement sends him down a road studded with friends, foes, adventure, and hidden agendas. One such friend is Egg, who becomes Dunk’s squire, yet even he may hold secret motivations of his own.
In this gripping prequel, Dunk and Egg seek glory in a world both familiar and new to Game of Thrones fans. What the two fortune seekers encounter, however, is a world of distrust and political machinations. Chivalry is not lost while Dunk holds fast to his dreams of honor. But such outdated virtues make him a target—and they may even lead to his ruin. This vivid and elaborately wrought tale brings new dimension to George R. R. Martin’s beloved world.

RECOMMENDED: Venetia by Georgette Heyer is a Kindle Daily Deal today at $1.99. As of this moment there isn’t price matching, but fingers crossed! This is one of my favorite Heyer romances because I love the dialogue between Venetia and Damerel. Also of note: the unabridged Audible version is also $1.99, so if you like to read and listen, both will set you back less than $5.
Alas, the abridged version read by Richard Armitage, which is some serious candy for your ears, is not discounted.
Her beauty rivaled only by her sensibility, Venetia Lanyon is nearly resigned to spinsterhood, thanks to the enormous amount of responsibility she inherited with a Yorkshire estate, an invalid brother and the lackluster efforts of two wearisomely persistent suitors. Then she meets her neighbor, the infamous Lord Damerel, a charming rake shunned by polite society–exactly the type of man that a woman of quality should stay away from.
Though his scandalous past and deepest secrets give Venetia every reason to mistrust him, a rogue always gets what he wants. Without warning, his demanding kiss threatens to become a bachelor’s undoing…and a spinster’s most passionate awakening.

The Reluctant Widow by Georgette Heyer is also a Kindle Daily Deal today at $1.99. I haven’t read this one, but I’m planning to soon because the setup sounds like a lot of catnip. A penniless young woman ends up at an estate by mistake where a young wealthy dude is about to die. So she ends up married to him and by morning is a very wealthy widow. A virgin widow, I suspect. Which…ok, yes, please. Plus there’s a mystery and a smuggling ring and I need to clear a few hours this afternoon.
Georgette Heyer is best known for her witty and charming Regency romances, but she is also responsible for a handful of mystery novels. On occasion, mystery would find its way into her romances, embroiling her well-born heroes and heroines in adventures that were alternately chilling and hilarious. In The Reluctant Widow, Elinor Rochdale, a young woman of good birth but straitened circumstances, sets out to accept a position as a governess and ends up plunged into a tangle of foreign intrigue instead.
Elinor’s adventure begins when she inadvertently mistakes the carriage waiting at the coach stop for one sent by her prospective employer, Mrs. Macclesfield. She finds herself carried to the estate of one Ned Carlyon, who Elinor mistakes for Mr. Macclesfield. Carlyon, meanwhile, believes Elinor to be the young woman he hired to marry his dying cousin, Eustace Cheviot, in order to avoid inheriting Cheviot’s estate himself. Somehow, Elinor is talked into marrying Eustace on his deathbed and thus becomes a widow almost as soon as the ring is on her finger. What starts out as a simple business arrangement soon becomes much more complicated as housebreakers, uninvited guests, a shocking murder, missing government papers, and a dog named Bouncer all contribute to this lively, frequently hilarious tale of mistaken identities, foreign espionage, and unexpected love set during the Napoleonic Wars.

grumblegrumble
Scribd has 11 Georgette Heyer audiobooks and only 1 Georgette Heyer e-print.
For once, the two Georgette Heyers are on sale at amazon.ca too. I just bought the paperback editions a few years ago and just haven’t been able to persuade myself to pay $9.99 to get the e-versions as well, so it’s nice to get two of my favourites at such low prices.
It’s nice that Sourcebooks Casablanca brought these novels back into print and with (mostly) attractive covers, but they had someone with a completely tin ear do the copy editing. Whoever the copy editor was, Heyer’s Regency slang totally eluded him/her and the ridiculous errors will jar you out of the story if you’ve read her work in better text editions.
It Started with a Scandal by Julie Anne Long is $1.99 at Amazon.
I’m going old school. There are a couple of Anne Stuart oldies (The Demon Count & The Demon Count’s Daughter) that are $1.99.
There are also a couple of Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark (#5 and #6) that are the monthly deal.
Phillips Gregory is a wonderful writer. I particularly found The White Queen the most fascinating of all her Plantagenet/Tudor series because it makes you think .What if Edward1V had not died so young there would never have been the princes in the tower ( in another novel Gregory makes a great case that The instigator if not the actual murderer of the princes being Margaret of Anjou, Henry Tudor’s mother. Henry Tudor defeats Richard and the rest is history. Thanks for including the White queen
Um… except that Margaret of Anjou was the mother of Henry VI, not Henry VII. I suspect you meant Margaret Beaufort?
