  • Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

RECOMMENDED: Are you There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume is $1.99 digitally. Margaret has just moved from New York to New Jersey and is unsure of herself, her religion, or what to do now that’s she’s reaching puberty.  If you go by “issue,” this is the menstruation and religion one – and it’s lovely. I must have read it 20 or more times.

Margaret Simon, almost twelve, has just moved from New York City to the suburbs, and she’s anxious to fit in with her new friends. When she’s asked to join a secret club she jumps at the chance. But when the girls start talking about boys, bras, and getting their first periods, Margaret starts to wonder if she’s normal. There are some things about growing up that are hard for her to talk about, even with her friends. Lucky for Margaret, she’s got someone else to confide in… someone who always listens.

  • Deenie

    Deenie by Judy Blume

Deenie by Judy Blume is $2.99 digitally right now. This was one Blume book that I didn’t quite get until I was older, and then POW. Right in the feels. Deenie is diagnosed with scoliosis and put into a neck-to-hip brace, she goes from being “the pretty one” who receives attention for her looks, to receiving attention for her looks in a way she doesn’t know how to process.

I’m sort of astounded at how many details I remember about these books. I can’t remember what I was wearing yesterday, but the name of the brace Deenie wore? Milwaukee Brace. Why do I remember? No idea – these books made a hell of an impression.

When Deenie finds out that she has scoliosis, she’s scared. When she sees the brace for the first time, she wants to scream.

But the words won’t come out. And Deenie, beautiful Deenie, who everyone says should be a model, is stuck wearing a brace from her neck to her hips. For four years—or longer. She never worried about how she looked before—how will she ever face the hard times ahead?

  • Tiger Eyes

    Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume

Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume is $2.99 digitally. This is the story of Davey, whose father is killed in a supermarket holdup. Her mother takes her and her brother west to New Mexico, where her father’s sister and husband live. This book is about grief, recovery, alcoholism, and finding purpose in your life, and I just lost an hour of productivity re-reading parts of it.

Davey has never felt so alone in her life. Her father is dead—shot in a holdup—and now her mother is moving the family to New Mexico to try to recover. Climbing in Los Alamos Canyons, Davey meets mysterous Wolf, who seems to understand the rage and fear she feels. Slowly, with Wolf’s help, Davey realizes that she must get on with her life. But when will she be ready to leave the past behind? Will she ever stop hurting?

  • Just as Long as We’re Together

Just as Long as We’re Together by Judy Blume

Just as Long as We’re Together by Judy Blume is $2.99. As I said, most of her YA books are – and it’s horrible to be tempted by so many awesome books at once. This is the story of two best friends whose friendship changes when a new girl moves to their neighborhood, and, well, there’s a lot of other issues, too.

Rachel is Stephanie’s best friend. Since second grade, they’ve shared secrets, good and bad. Now in seventh grade, Alison moves into the neighborhood. Stephanie hopes all three of them can be best friends, because Stephanie really likes Alison. But it looks as if it’s going to be a case of two’s company and three’s a crowd. Can the girls’ friendship be saved?

  4. leslie says:

I think Judy Blume has more books on the banned list than any other author. She’s a treasure, 77 and still writing wonderful books.

  5. Mara says:

FYI, “A Week to be Wicked” is on sale for $3.99. This is the lowest it has been in more than a year… There’s a ton of great Amazon sales on today, including a bunch of Susan Mallery and Eloisa James

  6. Lostshadows says:

I’m not quite sure how I managed it, but I think I’ve only read one Judy Blume book. I read about 3 zillion SVH books, so its not like I wasn’t reading YA. Just not those.

    *hangs head in shame*
