Say Yes to the Marquess
RECOMMENDED: Say Yes to the Marquess by Tessa Dare is $1.99 right now – perfect if you need a weekend historical with humor and emotional depth. Elyse reviewed this book and gave it a B+, saying she loved the sharp, business-minded heroine, and the portrayal of the hero.
Your presence is requested at romantic Twill Castle for the wedding of Miss Clio Whitmore and … and …?
After eight years of waiting for Piers Brandon, the wandering Marquess of Granville, to set a wedding date, Clio Whitmore has had enough. She’s inherited a castle, scraped
together some pride, and made plans to break her engagement. Not if Rafe Brandon can help it. A ruthless prizefighter and notorious rake, Rafe is determined that Clio will marry his brother–even if he has to plan the dratted wedding himself.
So how does a hardened fighter cure a reluctant bride’s cold feet?
- He starts with flowers. A wedding can’t have too many flowers. Or harps. Or cakes.
- He lets her know she’ll make a beautiful, desirable bride–and tries not to picture her as his.
- He doesn’t kiss her.
- If he kisses her, he definitely doesn’t kiss her again.
- When all else fails, he puts her in a stunning gown. And vows not to be nearby when the gown comes off.
- And no matter what–he doesn’t fall in disastrous, hopeless love with the one woman he can never call his own.

The Duchess War
RECOMMENDED: The Duchess War by Courtney Milan is free right now. This is book 1 in the Brothers Sinister series. Carrie reviewed it and gave it an A+, saying, “The Duchess War is lovely – smart, touching, funny, sexy, and dizzyingly romantic. Read it right away – yes, now. Everything on your to-do list can wait, believe me.”
Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly–so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don’t get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.
But that is precisely what she gets.
Because Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont, is not fooled. When Minnie figures out what he’s up to, he realizes there is more to her than her spectacles and her quiet ways. And he’s determined to lay her every secret bare before she can discover his. But this time, one shy miss may prove to be more than his match…

A Night to Surrender
RECOMMENDED: A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare is $2.99 right now. This is book 1 of Spindle Cove, which is a much-loved historical series where intelligent women who are too clever to fit in with society all live together near the seaside.
We have two RITA® Reader Challenge reviews for this book. Harper Gray reviewed it and gave it a C+, while Kelly reviewed it and gave it an A-. Many readers adore this series, so if you’re thinking of trying it, hooray for sales!
Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there.
Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn’t belong here. So far as he can tell, there’s nothing in this place but spinsters . . .and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It’s a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch–a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram’s makeshift army.
Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle; but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?

The Orphan Pearl
The Orphan Pearl by Erin Satie is .99 and it just came out this week. Satie’s historicals are unique, rich, and detailed, and explore various classes of Victorian England. In this story, the heroine has a great deal of sexual experience that she’s not apologizing for – which readers really liked. I haven’t read this book (yet) but I really enjoyed The Lover’s Knot ( A | K | AB ), in which the heroine brews indelible ink and runs her own shop.
All’s fair in love and war.
Lady Lily Spark has been missing, presumed dead, for years. Now she’s back in England, and in possession of a secret that could change the course of history. And she has no intention of giving it—or herself—up to anyone.
John Tacitus Ware doesn’t know Lily’s secret. All he knows is that she has one—and he’ll have to win it from her if he wants to regain his place at the heart of British diplomacy.
John and Lily are playing a dangerous game, with war and peace as the stakes. But as John’s ruthless ambition collides with Lily’s skilled manipulation, the attraction between them may change the rules for good.

Excuse me while I go all fangirl over A Night to Surrender, my favorite Spindle Cove story. I love the battles between the hero and heroine and the descriptions of the society of Spindle Cove. May be time for another re-read.
yes! Tessa Dare and Courtney Milan are both auto buys for me. Loooove them both.
It’s not a historical but rather a contemporary new adult novel ~ Sarina Bowen’s The Year We Fell Down (The Ivy Years Book 1) is currently free to Kindle readers. It was a fine read.
Free is in my budget for sure! I noticed The White Queen by Philippa Gregory is on sale at Amazon too — $1.99 I think.
The Spindle Cove books are great, though some of the heroes are pretty pushy sexually and aggressive alpha males. I appreciated how smart and capable the women were, and if you like books with a lot of light comedy and cute misunderstandings, you’ll probably like these.
Courtney Milan’s Brothers Sinister books are basically just warm and sweet, like cuddling up with your favourite hot beverage while it’s cold outside. The heroes tend to be smart, respectful, clever, and the heroines likewise… I really love how Ms Milan’s couples always respect, appreciate, and clearly enjoy each other. Like you can picture them growing old together. Definitely recommended if you like your heroes a little less alpha but still appropriately dashing when needed and deliciously handsome and intelligent. The hero of The Duchess War is probably one of my favourites just because of how approachable and good natured he is.
It’s good that “A Night To Surrender” is on sale (again) because the Spindle Cove series is stellar, but when, oh when, will “A Week To Be Wicked” (#2) ever go on sale? I own it in MM, but I can’t carry that around with me like an old, beloved stuffed animal every day. I’d be very comforted if I had it on my phone and could visit with Minerva and Colin on the road whenever I wanted (needed) to.
The village of Spindle Cove can get a bit claustrophobic at times, so when Minerva and Colin hightail it out of there, I feel like I can breathe again (which makes little sense when they are cooped up in the coach for hours…). But, ultimately, what makes me think I will eventually break down and shell out the full $7.99 is that Colin’s redemptive growth (from self-entitled prick in “A Night To Surrender” into a man worthy of Minerva and her fabulous brain in AWTBW) is insanely believable. Tessa Dare does this in such a short period of time that it shouldn’t work, but every time I read it, and test the plausability of that growth as well as the trueloveforeverandever-nessof the romance, I buy it.
Minerva and Colin have stayed with me for three years. I love their sniping humor and their tentative approach to “like”, and then to love.
Gotta run – have to go toss $7.99 B&N’s way right now.
(Oh – and “Come Dancing” by Leslie Wells, which was favorably discussed here few weeks ago, is currently $0.99 on B&N)
Does anyone know how the Erin Satie books are tied together? Do they need to be read in order?
SF @7
I’ve read all 3 of the Satie books. They can be read alone, but I’m glad I’ve read them in sequence. With some reservations, I’ve enjoyed them all.
Satie is an interesting new voice and I’ll pre-order her next title ASAP.
There is much to admire in Lily (she is courageous and complex). Her backstory, however, could do with some fleshing out. Ware is manipulative, but gorgeous and romantic (the flower scenes) and he atones very properly. He forces himself to stand back and watch Lily save herself, physically (the roof scene) and emotionally (from her Dad).. He is less experienced sexually than Lily and couldn’t care less. (How unusual is that in a HR?)
And I love the cover.
@Betsy:
when, oh when, will “A Week To Be Wicked” (#2) ever go on sale?
SING IT. I wish it would go on sale, too!
I already bought three of these at full price. In fact, I don’t seem to be able to hold back on the trigger when it’s a new Courtney Milan.
@Betsy That wail? That was me involuntarily crying out with agreement–I NEED A Week To Be Wicked to go on sale. I need it so bad.
I’m just hoping that maybe subsequent books in the series will go on sale, now that A Night To Surrender has. *fingers crossed*
Seriously — Minerva and Colin 4ever!!!!
I was able to snag A Week to be Wicked on sale – back in fall 2013. So it has happened at least once… Maybe there is hope!
