In Your Wildest Scottish Dreams

In Your Wildest Scottish Dreams by Karen Ranney is $1.99! This book was one of Elyse’s picks in January’s Hide Your Wallet. This is the start to a new series and is a bit of a second chance romance. Readers loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine, but found the book had some pacing issues. Has anyone started the MacIain series?
Seven years have passed since Glynis MacIain made the foolish mistake of declaring her love to Lennox Cameron, only to have him stare at her dumbfounded. Heartbroken, she accepted the proposal of a diplomat and moved to America, where she played the role of a dutiful wife among Washington’s elite. Now a widow, Glynis is back in Scotland. Though Lennox can still unravel her with just one glance, Glynis is no longer the naïve girl Lennox knew and vows to resist him.
With the American Civil War raging, shipbuilder Lennox Cameron must complete a sleek new blockade runner for the Confederate Navy. He cannot afford any distractions, especially the one woman he’s always loved. Glynis’s cool demeanor tempts him to prove to her what a terrible mistake she made seven years ago.
As the war casts its long shadow across the ocean, will a secret from Glynis’s past destroy any chance for a future between the two star-crossed lovers?

A Game of Scandal by Kathryn Smith is 99c! This historical romance is the second book in the Friends Trilogy. I’ll be honest, this book sounds amazing. The hero once proposed to the heroine, but she beat feet and disappeared. Now, she runs a gaming club and is now the most scandalous woman in London. She sounds like a badass. Readers warn the book piles on the melodrama, though some enjoyed it. It has a 3.8-star rating on GoodReads.
He had made a proposal of marriage… to a woman who is now the most scandalous female in London. When Gabriel Warren, the handsome Earl of Angelwood, offered marriage to Lady Lilith Mallory, he thought his happiness was complete. But the man she once loved can destroy the livelihood she has made for herself. For Gabriel is now a powerful man, one who is determined to shut down her establishment. Yet with each touch, each kiss, she begins to wonder if they could ever have a future — and overcome the scandals of their past.

Along Came a Duke by Elizabeth Boyle is $1.99! This is the first book in her Rhymes With Love series. A few readers mentioned having difficulty getting interested in the characters, while others found the interactions between the hero and heroine to be entertaining and full of chemistry. Anyone read this one?
“A young lady with a fortune is subject to all sorts of untoward attentions by the worst sort of vagrants.” -Aunt Allegra
A lesson Tabitha Timmons, a penniless spinster, has never needed to heed. That is, until she is left a vast fortune payable only upon her marriage to the very respectable Mr. Barkworth—a match that offers little chance of discovering exactly what her aunt means by “untoward attentions.”
But the same can’t be said when the Duke of Preston happens along Tabitha’s path. He spies a rebellious streak in her that matches his own and he makes it his mission to save her from such a passionless match, interfering in her life at every turn. All too soon, Preston—whose very name spells ruin—has Tabitha caught between the good fortune that guarantees her security, and his kiss, which promises an entirely different kind of happily-ever-after.

Eternity by Jude Deveraux is $1.99! This is book nine (yes, nine!) in the Montgomery/Taggert series, and is an American historical romance. So think western, instead of regency. This is a mail order bride type plot, and has a touch of the enemies to lovers trope. Some readers felt the ending was a little rushed, but many say they devoured this book in a single sitting. It has a 3.8-star rating on GoodReads.
Carrie Montgomery had grown up with seven adoring older brothers, and she was used to getting her way rather easily. Joshua Greene was only looking for a hardworking, practical mail-order bride to help with the farm and feed and clothe his children. Yet from the moment Carrie saw his photograph, saw his devastatingly handsome, sorrowful smile, the petite and pampered beauty knew she was the perfect wife for him.
Josh didn’t see it that way. Wed by proxy, he refused to be charmed by his new bride’s blond curls and effervescent laughter, or impressed by her trappings of wealth…even if his son and daughter believed she was a fairy princess come to life. He was furious — and ready to send her packing, until a near tragedy convinced him that her beauty was more than skin-deep. But even after he had yielded to the wild desire that surged between them, Josh could not admit how much he truly needed her. Then an old scandal threatened to re-emerge, and he realized that he could lose her forever….Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

In Your Wild Scottish Dreams was not one of my faves, I have to say. The Civil War is a weird backdrop that created some real dissonance for me. The hero is building ships for the Confederacy, and is described as believing that “slavery is wrong, but so is bullying” and “I’m like, oh you sweet summer child, you really haven’t thought this through.” Heroine’s family’s mill has fallen on hard times because the blockade means no more cheap cotton picked by slaves and I’m like “the problem here was not the blockade” and the whole thing sort of took me out of the romance. Add to that two completely cardboard villains and a shady union spy and it just did not work for me. YMMV of course!
@Mochabean I also had a major problem with the Civil War setting. The justification for helping the south just felt icky to me and I couldn’t get into the romance because of that distraction.
I usually am a fan of Karen Ranney, but this was almost a DNF. The complete lack of self awareness was astonishing. I just could not root for a hero that was indirectly profiting from the slave trade even with the disclaimer that he didn’t “like” slavery. It just really showed how personal greed across the globe contributed to efforts to enslave people. Overall, I could not get into the plot (albeit very clunky) because of the angst about how the Union was ruining one’s family business.
@Mochabean thanks for alerting me to the issues with the Karen Ranney book. That type of theme would have totally distracted from the plot and made me feel like I wasted money. It’s really hard for me to read about characters I have a total moral objection to. It’s a weird dichotomy presented here because it’s historical fiction but you’d like the main characters to have some awareness of persons other than themselves.
I liked Karen Ranney’s book…but not like her other books I have read…I had certain issues with it, but I was still able to enjoy it somewhat. I just bought Game of Scandal so I can’t wait to read that one because I do love the author.
