A Mixed Bag of Romances on Sale

  • The Ghost Bride

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo is 99c! This is a mixture of historical fiction, fantasy, and romance. The Ghost Bride has actually been recommended to me by so many friends that I had to take notice, though I haven’t had a chance to read it just yet. Readers can’t say enough good things about the setting and Chinese folklore, though some mention the book reads more like a young adult novel, which they weren’t really expecting. It has a 3.7-star rating on GR.

‘One evening, my father asked me whether I would like to become a ghost bride…’

Though ruled by British overlords, the Chinese of colonial Malaya still cling to ancient customs. And in the sleepy port town of Malacca, ghosts and superstitions abound.

Li Lan, the daughter of a genteel but bankrupt family, has few prospects. But fate intervenes when she receives an unusual proposal from the wealthy and powerful Lim family. They want her to become a ghost bride for the family’s only son, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, traditional ghost marriages are used to placate restless spirits. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at a terrible price.

After an ominous visit to the opulent Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also by her desire for the Lims’ handsome new heir, Tian Bai. Night after night, she is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, vengeful spirits, and monstrous bureaucracy—including the mysterious Er Lang, a charming but unpredictable guardian spirit. Li Lan must uncover the Lim family’s darkest secrets—and the truth about her own family—before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever.

  • Serpent’s Kiss

    Serpent’s Kiss by Deborah Cooke

Serpent’s Kiss by Deborah Cooke is 99c! This is the tenth (holy wow!) book in the paranormal Dragonfire series and is the latest release. The next book comes out in six days! Some knowledge of the previous books is helpful, though readers loved the heroine – a sorceress who is over two centuries old and must preserve her chastity. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

One spark can banish every shadow in his heart.

The dragon shape shifter Thorolf is known for an impressive lineage, raw power in battle, and the impulsive indulgence of his appetites. The last has made him an outcast from his fellow Pyr, and even his hunt for their dangerous opponent, the Slayer Chen, hasn’t helped. Seduced by Chen’s ally Viv Jason, Thorolf finds himself drawn into a trap, as bait to lure his fellow Pyr to extinction. The only one to come to his aid is a woman he already knows to be a thief—does he dare to trust her with not just his own life but the survival of his kind?

Chandra has planned for centuries for a battle against evil that she knows will determine the world’s future. She’s never wasted time on the pleasures of the physical realm, much less experienced passion—until the firestorm sparks between herself and Thorolf, demanding more from her than she ever expected to give. Will the firestorm provide new power, or be a dangerous distraction that gives Chen the chance to triumph over the Pyr forever?

  • A Spy Unmasked

A Spy Unmasked by Tina Gabrielle

A Spy Unmasked by Tina Gabrielle is 99c! This is a historical romance and the first book in the In the Crown’s Secret Service series. Readers loved how the hero and heroine meet at a masquerade and are forced to work together, but some felt the ending was wrapped up way too quickly and wanted more. Does this get anyone’s Spidey senses tingling?

    London, 1820

The mission did not go quite as Robert Ware–known in society as the new Earl of Kirkland–planned. A spy in the service of His Majesty, Robert is a “guest” at a masquerade party as he retrieves vital information for a murder investigation. Until he’s quite unexpectedly interrupted by an exquisite, masked woman with glittering green eyes. And a pistol she has cocked and aimed right at him…

Lady Sophia Merrill has defiantly taken up justice’s shining sword, determined to expose the brigand who murdered her eccentric but brilliant father, and stole his latest invention. Now she must masquerade as Robert’s betrothed in order to infiltrate the Inventor’s Society and find the killer. But the undeniable potent attraction between them not only imperils the investigation, but Sophia’s reputation…and both of their lives.

  1. Vasha says:

The Ghost Bride is really interesting, and really creepy in parts. And it’s definitely YA, I can’t think why it would be marketed otherwise. There were aspects i didn’t like but mostly because I don’t personally care for paranormal romance & there were a few PR-like bits. But my favorite aspect was that the non-western setting was more than superficial; the heroine’s ideas were very informed by her Malaysian-Chinese culture and the ultimate choice she makes is one that would be surprising for an American high-school student. Indeed it could be read as her turning away from westernization. I wish I could be more specific; this would be a really fun book to discuss with others who’ve read it.

  2. Catherine says:

I really liked The Ghost Bride. I can see why it might be called YA–the heroine is still under her father’s roof and is learning about the world, as well as trying to overcome some issues from her childhood–but I’m not entirely sure that calling it that wouldn’t be underestimating it somehow. If I had to compare it to a film, I would pick Spirited Away, which is also sort of YA-ish but really appeals to every age group.

And yes, the non-Western setting was fantastic! I’ve been recc’ing it everywhere. 😀

  3. Vicki says:

I also liked The Ghost Bride a good deal. The young woman has spirit, she makes the best of a less than ideal situation, she works to improve her life and the life of her families. I also enjoyed the setting – I did a lot of googling while reading this and the details seem pretty much right on. I do not have a problem with the supernatural in stories and it seemed appropriate here. I also am not sure YA is the right designation. Certainly she lives with her father and her decisions are guided by the adults around her. However, that is culturally appropriate for even older young women in that setting.

  4. NOOOO!! Kobo tells me it’s not available in Australia! I’m gonna go have a good cry now, because I’ve been wanting to read this for ages.
